Fat White Family & various offshoot bands (Moonlandingz, Insecure Men, Warmduscher, Pregoblin etc)

Is the drummer not their strongest link btw, or is it meant to sound like that?

I don't mind what I've heard of them at all really. Not all of it instantly grabs me, but despite being (what I think of as) quite lo-fi, seems like the type of stuff that would bear a few relistens to properly appreciate. But in every track the drummer just seems a bit off, and I'm not sure whether this is a stylistic thing or if it's just that he's twatted of his head and/or crap.

Drummer's tight, and good. He's the right drummer for this band, I reckon. I've seen him play with other bands; and he's done some of his own stuff, and the FWF sound is in there too, so I'm saying that his drumming is part of the FWF sound.

hm i am pretty good at spotting off drummers and he's definitely not one..... i don't really know what you mean! i guess it must be a stylistic thing, cos he is a tight player

The lazy swing to it is pretty nice but he does seem to nod off now and then tbf (eg. about 2:32, though maybe that's meant to happen). Tighter than the drummer in my old band, mind, used to sometimes diverge madly then fall back into synch and find the drummer kept going at the end, thinking there was another verse left.

Rockanroll is Tribal shock! Who knew!

Maybe the fact that FWF generate such strong and opposed views demonstrates that they are a proper RnR band after all?

The strong and opposed views haven't been so much about the music tho - least not on this thread. Even some of the people who have slated their marketing and behaviour have said they enjoy the music. I just watched the clip rutabowa posted above and what can I say - maybe there was something in the air, but for me that was a decent effort, no more no less. It doesn't really do it for me, but that's not really very important; if you like it, more power to you.

edit - about the drummer, sounds fine to me. A bit jangly, but that's how I would want it to be given the rest of the sound.

Yeah.... maybe I use appreciate in a broader sense than you do. I can appreciate the merits of something even if it has no real meaning or importance to me, even if I actively don't like it.

Yeah, in that sense I agree. I guess I meant at the level of that kind of connection that is the intention of the performance, rather than just seeing that something is goos.

And yeah, I've been at plenty of live shows over the years when one person was saying "BEST SHOW EVAH!!" and the other person was saying "well what the fuck is this shit?"

Oh yes, so so many. :D[/quote]

Not at all sure their music has generated such strong views or polarisation.
most of the thread hasn't been about the music right. but in the bits that have been about the music there has been a fair bit of polarisation with some people raving about it, others vehemently slating it... and yeah some people just falling somewhere in the middle. opinions eh.

As a soundman, I can give you one several possible explanations, but I do believe your mind is already made up.

My mind is made up that it's incredibly pretentious for a (really poor) backing singer to have two different mics? Yeah, yeah it is. I'm willing to accept the mics sounding the same could have been related to poor sound setup, but the Exchange is a pretty professional venue and I've rarely seen artists have setup problems there... no one else on the bill appeared to have issues and no one in the band complained that we saw.

But no surprises. This lot have all the moves worked out. Shame about the songs. Music. Singing. Words. Etc etc.

e2a: I have no idea what his stand on racial harmony is.

Yeah, that 'lazy swing' is it. My ears are a bit picky about rhythm - although not OCD, (for eg) IMO Adler was a far better drummer than Sorensen for that sound despite Sorensen being much crisper.

Is it rutabowa that knows FWF in the flesh? Do you think they might do a collaboration with Rebecca Black if you suggested it? That'd be epic.

you are quite the expert on them considering you left after 1 and a half songs.

as you will see from the video i posted both singers have one microphone each, in the usual fashion... why you are obsessed by this detail is beyond me tho.

Saul does have two mics. Don't know why though. He sings lead and BVs, so maybe they're mixed for different effects or levels?

ETA He has them at different heights, so maybe he uses them to sing differently depending on his posture? He plays guitar, so can't change the mic stand if he wants to switch whatever it is he might want to switch?

Dunno, though.

And you're alarming precious about such a shit band. Are you promoting them again soon, or something? Nothing like a vested interest to drop the blinkers... :D

He had a ton of mics when we saw them, I guess you could call me a liar if you like, but it won't change that. The reason for mentioning it was that it was an object of quite a good deal of amusement for the folks who decamped outside. People noticed.

And... Three songs, deary. Three. Plenty enough to assess most any band. Certainly this bunch of talentless cunts.

That's the most likely explanation. It's an old school way of getting a different sounding voice, nothing mysterious or outrageous about it tbf.

tl:dr

You did no such thing. You laid out two choices - either you like this band and their live performance, or you don't like the live performance ergo not the band. Granted my reply to you was a bit caustic, but as I pointed out to story it's perfectly reasonable to like a performance, but not the music and vice versa.

Stop being silly. It's quite obvious that in his opinion the video in question summed up the 'essence' of the band and what they are about.
I don't dig their their older recordings that much, it's not my bag. I kind of enjoy their live wasted ramble which for me captures better (for me) what the band are really about. I think their last couple of recordings are leaning more towards this. A good thing I think.

I agree that you don't like that video, it's probably not worth exploring the FWF further.

That "essence" you speak of is solely in the eye of the beholder tho. For me their "essence" is clearly other than what ruts and perhaps you see.

Personally, I can grow to love slightly off-the-beat stuff like that, but only once I've got to know a band's music properly iykwim. Until I've grown to know their style my frontal cortex is constantly prodding me and saying "he missed it again, he missed it!" :D
