FA Cup 2013/14

I think it's interesting to see the narrative developing.... The Arsenal story of how they, one of the giants of football, the sort of club who can bring out internationals as substitutes in extra time, were given such a scare by a scrappy little club who aren't even a regular fixture in the premier league. The story (on my Facebook feed too) seems to be that we're thugs but their elegant command of the beautiful game won out despite our violence and cheating.

Interestingly, there was apparently none of that after the match last night, the fans were very nice to each other. Lots of people shaking hands and saying we gave them a good match, what an exciting game etc.

It was a great game and anyone who thinks Hull were bad sports for not turning up and trying to play like Barcelona is an idiot. The ref had an absolute shocker - any issue anyone had with how the game was played should be directed at him.

The Hull fans were great. One of the best things I heard all day was a group of them sing 'you're rich and you're miserable' to a fairly quiet Arsenal lot passing them on the way in:D

That sounds *very* like them :D

There are some epic hangovers in this house today, bless 'em. And some incredulity they now get to play in Europe- this lot are all fans man and boy who remember when the club was locked out of the ground and looked like it was going to the wall- they can't quite believe where they are now

I watched most of the game yesterday and didn't see any thuggery or violence.

You gave them a scare in a game they expected to win. They don't like it so somehow need to justify how you matched them for most of the time.

Must be cos you were cheating. 19th century football. :)

you obviously missed, as did the referee, the at least two fouls by hull players in their own penalty area. while i don't think the hull team are thugs (i've seen considerably more fouls and cheating by such teams as benfica, and by such luminaries of the game as vinnie jones or alan shearer) i don't think that the antics of eg huddlestone - noted by the commentators during the game - should be swept under the carpet as hull fans pretend their team's all sweetness and light. btw making out hull are some little side with no international players ignores the contribution e.g. maynor figueroa has made to the honduran team (100+ appearances), robert koren (60+ appearances for slovenia), robbie brady (ireland under-21s), paul mcshane (ireland squad for euro 2012) etc. please don't make out that hull are some tu-penny-ha'penny side with nary an international in the squad because that's a lie.

I didn't suggest Hull were sweetness and light, nor that they had no internationals. Time to read again without your partisan hat on, eh?

you said arsenal are "the sort of club who can bring out internationals as substitutes in extra time". what was there stopping hull doing the same? why did you say it, if not to create the impression that hull are some poor team who only have homegrown players, as though those are always inferior?

Read the first two clauses of my original post

I said it because it is the narrative I saw developing on Facebook. As I said. In my original post.
yes. and yet you don't seem to see that as worth challenging. why not? the answer, it seems to me, is because it suits you to accept that image of hull as plucky underdogs without the advantages of arsenal.

Yes. Whatever you say.

The fact I raised the narrative to make the point I disagreed with it is neither here nor there, eh? And I'll not even bother to get into your contention that Arsenal and Hull are comparable teams

of course they're fucking comparable - but they're not equivalent. i hope that isn't too hard for you to get your head around. i never said you agreed with the narrative you put up, i said you hadn't challenged it because it suited you to be seen as the underdogs without arsenal's advantages.

God, you'd pick a fight with your own reflection. Let's just say I agree with you, I bow down to your superior knowledge, or testosterone or something. I really CBA to deal with you, I'm off to enjoy the sun!

They were the underdogs.

They don't have arsenal's advantages.

What are you arguing about?

I thoroughly enjoyed that match, although it made me wonder what Curtis Davies has to do to make the England squad.
