Sauber seat battle: Bottas vs Bortoleto as Zhou Guanyu ruled out

Zhou Guanyu is set to lose his Sauber F1 seat as reports suggest Valtteri Bottas is competing against the Fernando Alonso-backed Gabriel Bortoleto to partner Nico Hulkenberg as the team begins its transition to Audi. As F1 heads into the 2024 Italian GP at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, the stats do not look great for the 25-year-old Zhou as he trails in qualifying to the Finnish Bottas by 14-1 and trails in races 10-5, with a disparity of half a second being common through the season. It means that the man from China seems set to lose his seat after three seasons, despite being in negotiations with Mattia Binotto, as the decision seems to come down to Bottas and Bortoleto.

The ex-Mercedes man boasts an impressive CV by helping the Silver Arrows to five constructors’ championships from 2017-2021 as well as claiming 10 Grand Prix victories, 67 podiums and 20 pole positions whilst finishing runner-up in 2019 and 2020 behind Lewis Hamilton. Additionally, since joining Sauber he has scored 59 points in three seasons despite the team languishing at the back of the grid since the second half of 2022 and for all of 2024 and he has comprehensively had the beating of Zhou during that time. However, he faces the same problem as what caused his exit from Mercedes at the end of 2021: Contract length. At the age of 35, Sauber seem unwilling to commit to a multi-year deal, which is exactly what Bottas is looking for as per reports, opening the seat to Bortoleto.

Who is Gabriel Bortoleto?
The 19-year-old Bortoleto from Sao Paulo in Brazil. Currently racing in FIA Formula 2, the youngster has impressed Fernando Alonso and is a member of the McLaren Driver Development Programme. He is also 2023 FIA Formula 3 champion, claiming the title by 45 points in his rookie season ahead of Zak O’Sullivan. Since stepping up to F2, he has impressed equally by seamlessly transitioning through the categories. The Brazilian is second in the standings behind Isack Hadjar with two poles, four podiums and a feature race win in Austria as he competes for the title, where he aims to close a 36-point gap with four rounds to go.

He has been signed to Alonso’s management company since September 2022 showing his impressive talent that has been enough to woo the two-time F1 world champion into backing him. “Gabriel has extraordinary talent and is ready for big challenges and F1 is certainly the next step,” Alonso told MotorsportSpain.com on August 23. “He’s doing very well in F2, but you have to have the right time to get to F1. You can’t arrive too early or too late, you have to arrive at the right time and arriving at the right time will be Gabriel’s biggest challenge but of course, there are possibilities. He’s a driver that the teams are very attentive to, the drivers respect him, the teams also respect him and ask about him and not just Audi, so I hope we find some option.”

Sainz and Ferrari change their engine and gearbox for Italian Grand Prix

Carlos Sainz replaced his engine in Monza ahead of the Italian Grand Prix. It is the second time in the current Formula 1 season that the Spaniard has had a new engine. In total, drivers are allowed to use four engines per season. Should this number be exceeded, a grid penalty follows for the driver. Sainz is thus allowed one more engine change after the Italian Grand Prix. The Spanish driver also has a new gearbox in his car. With Sainz, there are also two other drivers in F1 this weekend who have new gearboxes for the Italian Grand Prix, Valtteri Bottas and Esteban Ocon.

Claim that Adrian Newey’s possible Aston Martin move could be announced next week

Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft has hinted that news around Adrian Newey’s future could be announced next week. Newey has been heavily linked with a move to Aston Martin for 2025. His departure from Red Bull was announced ahead of the Miami Grand Prix in May - and Newey is free to join another F1 team from the first quarter of next year. Aston Martin are thought to be the leading contender to sign Newey as they bolster their technical team ahead of 2026.

During Sky Sports’ FP3 coverage, Croft was prompted to discuss Newey’s future by 2016 F1 world champion Nico Rosberg. In response to Rosberg’s comment about Newey, Croft said: “I think we might hear something about Adrian Newey’s future next week.”

Rosberg replied: “What do you think that news is going to look like?”

“No idea,” Croft added.

“Yes you do. You told me before,” Rosberg said.

Croft explained: “He’s been linked heavily with Aston Martin hasn’t he. Do Aston Martin need Adrian Newey?”

Rosberg feels that every team on the grid “needs” Newey.

“Everybody needs Adrian Newey,” Rosberg commented. “Not as a daily but as a big picture consultant, concept, overseeing the team, overseeing the major decision making. I think that’s where he’s absolutely brilliant but the problem is he comes with a substantial cost as well. It seems Aston Martin will be able to afford that.”

Karun Chandhok added: “I think the cost actually is a pretty simple equation. If you move up two places in the constructors’ because of Newey, he’s paid for himself which is I am sure what they’re hoping for.”

Aston Martin have struggled in 2024, sitting fifth in the constructors’ championship, without a top three finish this year.

If Guanyu Zhou doesn't get a seat at Sauber (Audi) I wonder where he will go. He brings with him tens of millions so you think someone will want him?

I'm not sure there is a seat available

It will be very pleasing if Max cannot move forwards in the race and Lando ends up taking a chunk of points out of his lead. First he’s got to throw off his startline jinx and make it to the first corner first. Can he do it?!

Oh, Nozza will get the hang of it sooner or later.

The big question is how soon will Nozza be told to let Pastry ahead.

:)

If Red Bull don't move up McLaren could lead the constructors championship by the end of the day, I think

I haven't done the maths but it will be close I think

Strategy is always vital in any Formula 1 race, and it will be no different at the Italian Grand Prix. With high temperatures expected to hit Monza for the race, the track is expected to become extremely hot, meaning tyre degradation and preservation will be two vital aspects of the Grand Prix. But what will be the best strategy? Here is what Pirelli say.

Around the 'Temple of Speed', Pirelli believe that a one-stop strategy is possible for teams and drivers in the Grand Prix, even with the red-hot temperatures expected to hit the track throughout the day. There are two different ways for that to happen, either starting on the medium tyres and moving to the hards, or starting on the hard tyres and moving to the mediums.

If the one-stop strategy is not possible, a two-stop strategy is also said to be fast by Pirelli as teams might look for a tyre offset in the middle of the race. In terms of tyre allocations left for drivers, the top eight drivers all have the exact same set of tyres left: two sets of new hard tyres, one set of new medium tyres, and no set of new soft tyres.

Anthem watch:

The usual seven-movement opus rendered by a proper singer with a proper band.

Much gusto, much brio.
