European Super League (again)

Just fucking let them leave. Jesus christ. 12 teams playing each other endlessly. How unutterably dull.

It will have a terrible impact if this happens - though not as much as fans of Arsenal, Spurs, City and the RS finding they support a franchise that can (and probably will) move will.

heard all this rubbish before from fans when the premier league started. it will be the end of football blah blah. same thing when the 'champions' league was extended to include top 4 teams. once this new league happens, it will be a roaring success. It will be great seeing the best play the best. looking forward to it.

If this does happen, I really do hope UEFA & the national associations call their bluff and immediately kick these clubs out of the CL and their respective national leagues and cups.

It’s not even much of a gamble. There’s no fucking way the clubs as institutions, and the fans as football supporters, could respectively survive in their current form/ be content with a European super league being all they would ever be involved with going forward.

I suspect few tears would be shed by fans of the remaining clubs. On the contrary, football would become healthier across not just the top flight but the divisions below in England, Spain, Italy and elsewhere.

Don't think anybody is saying it will be "the end of football". We'll still play, in leagues with relegation and promotion and all that stuff. This is just the end form of the Champion's League. This is what they want to get to, the same teams playing each other endlessly. You're probably right, it will be hyped up by Sky and the rest, but ultimately they're exhibition matches.

Football works cos there is (in theory) the ability for any team to get anywhere. Bring up that drawbridge and it'll get pretty boring pretty quickly I reckon.

The 'premier league' was a purely financial arrangement. In football terms it is identical to the thing it replaced - it is the first division.

The champions league isn't as good as the old European Cup imo. Again, financially, I'm sure it's been a great success, but in footballing terms, I preferred the old system with three competitions, all of which the teams were very happy to be in. But it does at least maintain the principle that any team from anywhere could potentially qualify for it.

This proposal would never work. Strikes me as something being done to exert pressure when restructuring the Champions League rather than something anyone expects to happen. I hope it all backfires on them spectacularly.

For the English clubs, it strikes me that it's because there are 'only' four places in the Champs League, so at least two out of the Big Six (lol at that anyway) won't qualify in a given year. If this ends up with the big leagues getting even more places in the CL, it will have done its job. Four is already too many imo.

It's ironic Arsenal are in there. Were it not for the CL, I think Arsene Wenger would have won a few European competitions. A couple of Cup Winners and a UEFA along the line. Careful what you wish for.

Must be a tough balancing act for them to ensure they get their share of the pie but also ensure that as few others as possible do.

Ah, of course.

hasn't that been happening since the PL began? Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, United playing each other endlessly? Who has ever got bored of that? It's only fans of the non big six that are complaining. I can GUARANTEE old trafford, anfield, Emirtates will be sold out to the rafters when barca, real madrid and co come to play. Every single game will be sold out.

So, you're saying clubs that finish in the top are not happy to be playing CL football? I'm sure fans of west ham would be saying 'we shouldn't be in the CL playing Juventus or Bayern Munich' if they finish 4th.

No I'm saying that all the teams that qualified for the UEFA cup or Cup Winners' Cup were happy to be there. Among other problems, the current set-up has devalued the second competition massively, precisely because the likes of Bayern Munich or Juventus are very rarely in it.

Obviously this idea is utterly shit, but can I just point out that the new Champions League format due to be announced by UEFA tomorrow, which this is pre-empting, is almost as bad?

A 36 team league where you only play 10 matches, therefore not actually playing 25 of the teams, but still being ranked in a division with them. Oh, and two spots reserved for 'big'clubs who were too shit to actually qualify on merit.

JFC.

Is there a proposal to call goals 'back of the nets' too?

How about 10 x 9 minute 'periods' too for dying attention spans?

All those from outside the top 5 European leagues only allowed to field 8 players?

And we all thought it was VAR that was ruining football.

You have to love the sense of entitlement of these teams. They propose that they breakaway to form an elitist closed shop, but still play in the EPL. Really?

Fortunately I’ve long stopped giving a shit about top tier football, which has been ruined for years by ridiculous over corporatisation, slapping sponsorship opportunities on everything and demanding fans pony up ever increasing amounts for the privilege of watching. It’s almost inevitable this was where it was headed.
