Eliud Kipchoge runs sub-2 hour marathon

awesome. Shame it was out of competition, with car (to highlight route) and pacemakers, so not an official record. Still incredible.

It may not be an official Marathon record, but he did run a Marathon distance in less than 4 hours which is the significant thing and I bet now that the boil has been lanced we will see someone doing it in a race, if that is Kipchoge himself doesn't do it soon.

Chicargo marthon is 1 tomorrow with Mr Farah... I have some link, assume it is being streamed on YouTube or somehwere..

Brigid Kosgei (Kenya) on for the Paula Radcliffe's womens marathon record here. Currently more than 3 mins in front of the second female runner.

EDIT: Kosgei smashes the 16 year old record by more than a minute. Paula shakes her hand at the finish line but Kosgei appears not to know who she is.

Men’s marathon world record went today to Kelvin Kiptum in Chicago to 2:00:35 taking 34 seconds off the previous world record held by Eliud Kipchoge.

Kipchoge’s sub 2 world best (not an official world record due to various reasons) of 1:59:40 is now less than a minute away, and I reckon sub 2 hours could go within a year

Astonishing stuff. I wish they could do it without magic trainers though. :(

I think the magic trainers are available to buy for Joe Public for £300 or so, they’ll last for one marathon only, but the sort of marginal gain they offer means that for almost all runners they’d be just as well doing a bit more training or getting a few pounds off before considering the trainers instead

£400 for the Adidas ones which are single race. I don't think Nike have announced the price for their next generation yet (the ones Kiptum wore) but probably similar.

I think the horse has bolted as far as carbon plates etc goes tbh but single use shoes is absolutely gross.

I tend to wear my trainers totally out. Til there's holes in the bottom, then its summertime only, until they totally fall apart.

Is this lad a size 9 by any chance? if so I'll get an extra couple of years out of his shoes if he wants to start a freecycle account.

I'm sure minimum sole height will be introduced soon for elite competitions.

I'm not sure why they'd introduce a minimum as they're all going for massive wedges at the mo? There's already a maximum - coincidentally about a mm more than the Nike ones they were all wearing when it came in.

The Alphafly 3 that Kiptum wore are due to retail at about $300 if the price of the previous version is anything to go by, and they'll last for about 150-200 miles or so.

Not sure if Nike are working on a single use version like Adidas, but I hope not (and I highly doubt the Adidas pair are truly single use anyway, they'll just have declining benefits each time they're used).
