Electric cars

A quick look for MOT/WOF windscreen damage rules suggests that the governments of UK and NZ disagree about the centre being the most important part of the screen on average too

OT, but my dad‘s car once failed an MOT due to a chip in the A-zone. The guy at the garage heroically resolved it for him by fitting shorter windscreen wipers for about a fiver.

Forget the infotainment screens, in the electric nissan yesterday, I counted 14 seperate pieces of information being displayed at the same time by the Speedo. How much do you need? It's really not all necessary. The sat Nov, the radio, the heating controls were all seperate to this.

Current speed, remaining fuel/miles left in the tank. Possibly the current time. That’s it. Unless you’re on a track you don’t even need a rev counter.

Nonsense. There are loads more things than that. To pick just a few examples, how about the speed at which the speed limiter is currently set, whether the headlights/foglights etc are on, or an indication that the outside temperature is sufficiently low for ice to form?

As to a rev counter, how do you think deaf people drive manual cars?

The government has quietly backtracked on proposals to require every shop, office or factory in England to install at least one electric car charger if they have a large car park, prompting criticism by environmental campaigners.

The original plan required every new and existing non-residential building with parking for 20 cars or more to install a charger. However, the Department for Transport (DfT) has now revealed it will only require chargers be installed in new or refurbished commercial premises amid fears over the cost for businesses, according to a response to a consultation.

Disappointing. work based charging would be great for a lot of people.

They should include a winding handle so you can charge them by hand, located somewhere out of the way, above the front bumper for example.

Telsa is the biggest car company in the world by market cap. In fact it's bigger than the next 9 companies combined.

That's not even the most amazing thing on that chart. That's the Rivian valuation.

It’s nuts, when you see what VW Group is up to, if you have the wedge for a Tesla (buy or lease) you can get an e-tron, which is a much more pleasant place to spend time…

It makes me wonder how Tesla will fare now the competition is up to speed. But they have the first mover advantage and scale to out compete on price now, so maybe they can consolidate their advantage? That’s what that huge market cap seems to suggest.

Really it is going to come down to if the intrinsic tech is the hard part ( advantage Tesla ) or distribution and manufacturing ( advantage existing motor companies ).

seeing as batteries are a commodity and Tesla don’t actually make their own - it feels like teslas advantage is pretty thin

Not that up with this stuff, but VW seem to make an electric Golf, Audi SUV, Audi coupe, plus RS versions, and Porsche Taycans, coupes and estates. Seems to cover most bases and has the quality that you know each of these will bring. If I were to be tempted I think I’d head for an established brand.

And now the id3 and id4 which presumably is the platform which will replace the golf or equivalent and small SUV’s.

What Tesla understood, at least a decade before the legacy manufacturers, was that the electric car ownership experience is about more than just the car. That's why they put so much effort into their charging network which is still way better than the complex and fragmented mess that all the others have to deal with.

Obviously that advantage is going to be sustainable in the long term but it still means a lot but they still have the strongest EV brand and, like it or not, the 'Elon' cachet.

Sorry about the poor photo. My first sighting of a Mach e. A car mag hoped this would bring fun to electric cars. They said it was sterile. IMG_20220103_144416~2.jpg

Its an SUV / crossover thing. Is it that surprising that its soulless?

If you're really that bothered by the driving experience you wouldn't get this sort of car. You get an SUV for different reasons such as status or family or being an old man with a bad back etc.

Its more than a little annoying that so many EV's are suv / crossover things though not surprising. If you're budget doesn't stretch beyond £40k and you want an EV that's not a soulless box or a small car you're choice is incredibly limited as I found out.

ETA: This being said I'm probably the wrong person to be talking about cars with souls and driving experience. I've mostly seen cars as a means of transport. Having just spent a few days driving around the English countryside with its sunken lanes, single track roads and blind corners I was cursing having a gearbox. I'll take a 1 gear only EV any day.
