With the Rising Against Islamophobia demonstration on the 29 October 2011 at Newcastle Monument just round the corner the
EDL, a right-wing movement against Islamism and Sharia law in England, approached the camp on Saturday 22nd October 2011. This wasn’t exactly what we had hoped for as far as action is concerned but… It happened, and we’re all ok and still smiling.
There were 4 or 5 of them in their EDL outfits, Robby got headbutted after informing them he was from Sunderland. Robby was ok, the EDL bloke got arrested. After the police left, threats dripping with innuendo were exchanged. That’s when texts were sent.
But, a few of our diplomatic residents spoke with the Area Commander about why we were actually there. The discussion led to hugs, and a general point of agreement. He felt that there were common grounds even though we came from different positions. He then stated that he would give the instruction to overlook divisions and not to cause any trouble with us.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens on Saturday..
Also, Anti-Islamaphobia starts at 12 with various speakers and their speeches, with Spice Radio playing some tunes after they finish up. If EDL do show up they will be enormously outnumbered, but it’d be reassuring to have a few more people around to help with stewarding, but also to help us keep an eye on things incase they do get out of hand.
