Driving Standards

Most speed cameras don't work. The gatso types still use film which is expensive, so most local authorities don't bother to keep them running. Even the pretence is gone, with the calibration marks on the road worn away to nothing.
Are you sure about that? I don’t know where you live, but in London most cameras are digital now, and most cameras at traffic lights have been upgraded to those that monitor both red light jumpers and speeders.

Digital speed cameras are being installed round here at present, much smaller so harder to spot and also bidirectional

I’d be interested to know the stats for London. I can’t actually remember the last time I spotted a traditional film one. All the ones around Brixton, the South Circular, the Embankment and other areas I travel through regularly are digital ones, and I have seen multiple instances of them being triggered by a car in front of me.

I strongly believe that every 10 years everyone with a license should be forced to drive for an hour with a driving instructor to renew their license, if after the hour the driving instructor doesn't think the driver is safe they can advise DVLA to request a full test before the license is renewed.

Anyone with over 6 points should need to do this every 5 years.
Taxi drivers have to pass a test every 5 years. It's very similar to the DVLA test that you need to pass to get a license. It doesn't stop taxi drivers behaving like arses though.

An ex paramedic I know says that when on a blue light, they are not allowed to exceed the speed limit by either 10 or 20%...sorry, don't remember which now.
I also know that no one on a blue light is allowed to harass, bully or intimidate you to move out of their way inc. at red traffic lights.
the law makes no such stipulation for vehicles used for Police, Fireand Rescue or (NHS) Ambulance purposes

organisatiosn may have policieis stating such

primarily because of people like the funny handshaking lay manager twat of a Northern NHS service who managed to pop a 30 mph gatso @ 97 mph in a vehicle used by the Mobile Medical Team , this vehicle despite being in NHS BBurg Livery was technically owned by St John Ambulance

Winding up speeders is one of life's little pleasures.

I have an American friend. Over there a lot off cars are fitted with radar detectors. He built a radar emitter for his car. When a car overtakes him which has a radar detector on their dash he switches on his transmitter which causes the overtaking car to immediately brake to the speed limit.

When I was with him he managed to get cars to stay just ahead of him repeatedly braking when he buzzed them with the radar simulator .. childish I know but also amusing. :)

:(

19 year old driving a car modified to accelerate faster.
No insurance.
Driving 50% over the speed limit.
Kills a 13 year old child on his bike.
Not only fails to stop, but speeds off at nearly double the speed limit, on the wrong side of the road, hanging out of the side window as couldn't see through the smashed windscreen.
Has previously come to the attention of the police for racing on public roads.

9 months stir, 4.5 to be actually served. 3 year driving ban.

takes.the.fucking.piss.

For some odd reason, he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, but was only convicted of causing death by careless driving. Just how fucking hopeless are the CPS???

Depends where you live, as councils get to decide what their requirements are. If you live in the Midlands you'll notice a lot of taxis have Wolverhampton licences, because Wolverhampton doesn't require any test to renew a taxi licence, just an up to date DBS check and £750: Renewal of Private Hire Vehicle Operator Licence | City Of Wolverhampton Council

Perhaps a need for more education on the driving lessons/test.
As I've said before, perhaps young people should have a Restricted licence which prohibits them from driving more powerful cars until they have been driving for a few years or reach a certain age. Similar to motorbikes.
The downside of this is that it would just add more cars to the road, get a Corsa for the kids because they can’t drive the (too powerful) family car. And many families couldn’t afford another car so it’s in some ways regressive.

Though generally I support the idea, just pointing out some arguments against. I’d also have people required to cycle for a couple of years first (with get-outs for those physically unable to ride), because it’s really good for your hazard awareness and planning ahead skills, and makes you aware of the vulnerability of bikes and pedestrians.

Another one who had previously been caught driving like a bellend and yet allowed to keep his licence.

Fucking hell, just six years and eight months, will do 3 years and 4 months, and only gets a five year driving ban.

Lifetime ban and needs a much heavier sentence. The punishment for death by dangerous driving is a fucking joke.

Pissed-up, coked-up, and racing.

That should be life.

Probably minor compared with the above, but the keep left unless overtaking signs are showing on all of the M20 gantries...all those 3 lane hugger fuckers and the twats in the 4th still going strong, though

They'll be getting done then. Fixed penalties.

OB are cracking down on it and it's now an offence which is why you're seeing signs for it.

Getting worse of late, especially when all freight has to use M20 under Brock conditions.

Oh I saw those on the M4 yesterday

Pretty sure I was keeping left though

I'm no actuary but I bet the majority of accidents are caused by males under 30. Better education would help. Maybe all new, inexperienced young drivers should be made to have a black box fitted.
I guess it would defeat the object if they had to have an experienced driver sit with them

Just been behind a Wolverhampton plated one in Liverpool too. I've seen a few recently. Used to be your taxi license only allowed you to operate in the authority that awarded it.

It's always been an offence and there have been matrix signs for it for years. Which is silly because it implies it's only prohibtied when the matrix signs says so. A bit like having a sign above a speed limit sign saying "this speed limit must not be exceeded".

It was classed as "careless driving" and you could get a ticket for it but in reality nobody did. Quite a few forces are now dishing out the fines and that's where you see the new signs.

Just went down the M3, was 50 signs all the way and the traffic was heavy as hell but moving as all going the same speed, a major reason for the congestion is people moving lanes as the perceive the next one is going a smidge faster, there was a big sign saying, "Congestion, stay in lane" and under it a Lexus nipped across two lane to get in front of me, then slam the brakes on, ffs.

This seems a good place to ask this but I might regret it.

if you knew a driver that you suspected probably shouldn’t be driving, what would you do?

I have some information about their eyesight and fitness to drive which is possibly concerning.
He could be dangerous on the road but I suspect his trips are limited to the doctors and Tesco.

It’s not something I can approach them about because we don’t really have a relationship beyond saying hello.

I do also need to be honest and say it would benefit me a bit if they were no longer driving.

If you know their name and address you can contact the DVLA.

fwiw it is a doctor who makes the call and they seem overly generous towards allowing people to keep driving when they really shouldn't be allowed to do so. MIL has just been told she is borderline but they'll allow her, she gets in the car and forgets why she's there, plus deaf as a post and almost blind, ffs.

I know that snitches get stitches etc but...
Imagine that your or one of yours (or anyone for that matter) is crossing the road when they are on that limited trip to Tesco - and they take you out.
Report it

Thanks. I know I could report but wasn’t sure if I should because I was being selfish in my motivation but yes, if his eye sight is really poor he could kill someone.
