Donald Trump - MAGAtwat news and discussion

For years centrists and elite liberals banished the words ‘working class’ preferring their meritocratic phrases of ‘working people’ or the feeble ‘underrepresented groups’. Class was dead. Competing identify groups were the future.

The populist right have no such qualms. They also have no qualms in honestly calling out the consequences of deindustrialisation or pointing out who dies in illegal wars.

There is a massive lesson for our side here. We better learn it quickly…

JD Vance: I will fight for America’s forgotten heartlands

Another lesson might be unity on "our side".

Look at how the right, the evangelists, Christofascists, conspiracy theorists, gundamentals and all manner of fringe and mainstream conservatives have managed to organise their power.

It may be time to make (at least) temporary alliances with those that otherwise might be seen as fence sitting liberal guardian clutching types... However unpalatable it may be.

A suggestion, not a manifesto.

Could not disagree more. Any association with elite liberals and centrists kills our side’s credibility and we are tainted by association.

1. Biden isn’t on my side. Or those of my class.

2. Biden did run as ‘rust belt Joe’ (despite being a Washington insider and key member of the elite for 60 years). Why? As a corrective to Hilary Clinton’s disastrous campaign against Trump four years earlier which described people in those places as a part of ‘a basket of deplorables’.

3. Biden is not running as the voice of the rust belt in 2024, for the obvious reason that it’s simply not credible to do so.

1. I'm not defending Biden's centrist policies, just pointing out that he's not exactly shy about using the term working class

Trump was big on the "forgotten people" in his 2016 victory speech but I think he forgot about them almost as fast as he forgot about infrastructure

The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer.

We are going to fix our inner cities and rebuild our highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, schools, hospitals. We’re going to rebuild our infrastructure, which will become, by the way, second to none.

Same old same old, whoever wins.

The people who suffer most remain forgotten.

JD Vance: I will fight for America’s forgotten heartlands

This from the venture capitalist who wrote a book called “Hillbilly Elegy” who’s central thesis was that poverty and unemployment in the rust belt were principally caused by backward hick culture and laziness rather than macroeconomic phenomena:

Vance blames hillbilly culture and its supposed encouragement of social rot. Comparatively, he feels that economic insecurity plays a much lesser role. To lend credence to his argument, Vance regularly relies on personal experience. As a grocery store checkout cashier, he watched welfare recipients talk on cell phones, although the working Vance could not afford one.

I think you are worrying too much, mate.

We've had lots of newbies sign-up recently, it seems because of something happening over on the AV forums, I think we should give them some time to bed in.

I've seen too many aggressive replies to them, because of the general paranoia around here surrounding newbies being banned returnees, I personally welcome these newbies.
As someone who's migrated here from AV forums, thanks for the welcome. My take of what's going on over there is a load of MAGA/ Reform/ far right/ anti vaxxer types started crying about people with opposite views and left a load of bad reviews on Trustpilot. Unfortunately, the admin and mods decided the best way to deal with this was to try and appease them and bring in a load of complicated and draconian rules, treating posters who have been getting on well for years, like 5 year olds and slapping them with restrictions and bans over the silliest of things. Personally, I decided enough was enough when I was slapped with a "yellow card" meaning anything I post has to be pre approved by a mod. My crime? Saying that a MAGA supporter on TV looked like Beaker from the Muppets. 🙄 I am enjoying this forum, I like the relaxed atmosphere and the ability to have a laugh which sadly got sucked out of AV forums. The type of posters who are also migrating over from there, I'm sure they'll fit right in when they have worked out the difference here and bedded in.

Any way, back to the subject. Remember during the pandemic when a load of MAGAs were bleating about people wearing masks and calling it virtue signalling?......

Tbf, a lot of people thought Obama was a saviour.

Sadly, it turned out to be business as usual.

Nice AV refugees welcome here. Any Tumpist and fash-adjacent cunts can get to fuck.

Great bit of journalism in the FT today about the way Vance dovetails Trump's Maga with the Silicon Valley right of Peter Thiel.

How Peter Thiel and Silicon Valley funded the sudden rise of JD Vance

Vance’s ties to Thiel began more than a decade ago. In 2011, Thiel gave a talk at Yale Law School, where Vance was a student, about the “stagnation” of technological innovation in the US. “He was possibly the smartest person I’d ever met,” Vance later wrote about that day.

Vance soon abandoned a planned career in law, and even credited Thiel for his subsequent conversion to Christianity. “He defied the social template I had constructed — that dumb people were Christians and smart ones atheists,” Vance wrote.

If it is Thiel’s money which has funded Vance paying his way into the VP position, we should expect Trump’s agenda to include doing Thiel’s bidding.

So what does Thiel want to pay back the debt Vance has run up?

There is something seriously wrong with these people:

I think people are taking this far to seriously, it's just people having a bit of fun.

I think it was the much missed killer B who said we tend to assume our political opponents lack a sense of humour when oftern they don't.

In fact I think it downplays the significance of the assassination attempt, which is a good thing.

I swear to god, I actually walked past an old bloke yesterday afternoon wearing one of these. (I live in New York.)

I didn't fully twig it at the time 'cos I hadn't seen these sort of pictures but it did kind of cross my mind for a second and then I thought, 'No fucking way. You're imagining things'. And I then rationalized it away by thinking 'He's old bloke and he's a block away from a Medical Centre. It's probably just a coincidence. He's got an ear infection.' :D

Things look so bleak for the presidential election that I was forced to re-visit Scottish abuse of Trump back when twitter was a thing, to cheer myself up.

Unless the clearly senile Biden can be moved aside it's hard to see how Trump can be stopped at this stage. Many people just living in their own version of reality.

I'd never heard of "JD Vance" which isn't all that strange as he seems to have had as many surnames as Grant Shapps. However the guy describes the UK as Islamist so clearly his grasp on reality is as tenuous as Trump's himself.

I'm not a 100% sure on that score. Some True Believers think Trump surviving, momentarily moving his head when the shot rang out, was an Act of God. That sucks for the Trump supporter who died in the crossfire but nobody claimed that Republican Jesus was a beneficent god.

What I am 100% sure of is that Trump will monetize this. Expect emails in your inbox from a Trump PAC trying to sell you your very own Trump endorsed gauze. (If you want added red splotches, that will cost extra.)

What side and what does 'unity' mean?

"Who is this guy, really?" Fuentes said on his podcast. "Do we really expect that the guy who has an Indian wife and named their kid Vivek is going to support white identity?"
Is he a supporter of someone with a Slovenian wife, who called his son Barron?
