Donald Trump - MAGAtwat news and discussion

I don't see how he possibly wins at the next election. He'll mobilise voters against him as he did last time, even if they don't much like whichever centrist nobhead the dems run with.

Republican strategist types all know this. Their best bet is someone like DeSantis. A new generation of evil for them to get behind. So there's a part of me that thinks Go Donald Go.
Even if he doesn't get in (and reckon he will) all that rage isn't going away. Genie is well and truly out of the bottle.

Because the wave of hatreds has only increased in the last four years, all that rage and bigotry will go into electing him once more. And the Trumpist voters know exactly the kind of person they are voting for this time. There's no excuses or trying out an alternative to the usual politicians bollocks.

Obviously will be v glad if he doesn't get in.

The thing I find hard to gauge is to what extent the divisions we see are largely a matter of vocal elements in the media (including social media) vs. the general population being caught up with it.

That goes for both over here and in the US.

I sometimes mention memes that everyone on here would be aware of and get totally blank looks.

Maybe been listening to too many right wing Americans the last few years but they are convinced, especially with the indictment

You’d normally think an indictment would make them re-assess in the other direction.

These are strange times, though.
If the indictment fails (which seems likely from the Nation article posted above) it will allow Trump to do two things:

a) Play the persecuted victim, which has been the standard politics of the far right forever (‘white grievance’ I believe is one term). The ‘elite’ have come after him, unfairly all a big witch hunt, just like they unfairly target ‘you’. Elect him and he’ll stop this oppression.

b) Claim to have been totally exonerated, be completely clean, even if the case fails on a technicality such as time limits and it’s damn obvious that he did what has claimed. It gives him ‘evidence’ that he’s whiter than white, never been a crook.

The democrats will fuck this up because it’s what they do, they’re not brave enough or even interested in pushing anything other than bog standard centre-right pro business policies, which allows Trump to appear like the outsider and radical upstart fighting for the common man.

I think I've said before on here that the States' Twenty-second Amendment says that no one can be elected to the office of President more than twice. As far as I know Trump hasn't conceded the 2020 election yet, so would he not be flouting the Constitution by even running in 2024?

Don't be silly!

It wouldn't surprise me that if he got reelected and the repubs won a suitable number of states and congressional majorities, the 22nd amendment would be binned quicker than you can say "repeal".

I watched an interview with Jamie Raskin last night and he was asked the question about how performative the general republican trump-defending, anti-woke behaviour is. He was asked whether they still spouted the same nonsense behind closed doors as they did for the camera. His reply was not reassuring. It went along the lines of "It used to be mostly for the cameras but the majority of the new intake are true believers: they are exactly the same off-camera as they are on-camera".

Somewhat concerning....

So, soon we should learn what the charges are ..

Let's hope they are "overwhelming" :( :)

Trump claiming his campaign has raised $10m since the indictment.
:(

That does actually look quite damning . . . or am I wrong?
