" be careful what you wish for" in large letters all over this.
Surely best result is he doesn't get the nomination and then runs as an independent, splitting the Republicans vote.
I'm guessing there will be a concerted attempt to keep him out including from his former media supporters, like murdoch.

Does he need to be in the party? Iirc Bernie Sanders has run for the Democrat nomination as an independent at least once.

As far as I understand can run in the Primaries as a Republican or a Democrat and as there's no hierarchical party structure, as there is in the UK, nobody can stop you, and equally for the same reason anyone can register as a Democrat or Republican and vote in the respective primaries. It's not like the UK where the parties can turf out undesirables. If you win, you are the candidate of the party. Were Trump to stand and lose in the Primaries, I think that would show that he'd lost the support of those who would vote for him.

A grand jury vote to indict Trump could happen as soon as Monday but the process will probably take longer, according to this story:

An arrest would follow a vote to indict, though Trump is in Florida and I'm not sure if the DeSantis regime still recognises the federal government

Being arrested doesn't mean a great deal anyway. It is being charges that really matters.

the charges have already been turned down by one government agency

will be a lot of bluster but not a lot of legal ramifications

hush money to the porn star.. this is not what i want him arrested for

I think it's a relatively wildly held opinion that Trump never actually wanted to be President, he just wanted the attention and adulation.

Presuming this is still true, could Murdoch (or someone else) not offer Trump his own show or something in order to, explicitly or covertly, keep him from running?

Simply "hey, Donald, here's a studio, a camera, and an hour of prime time every night, you just keep yourself busy there".

Imagine they'd want to give him less if they could, not least because there's a danger he would spend his time attacking the favoured Republican candidate(s) as much as he would the Dems, but have to think they'd at least consider something along those lines.

Maybe a gameshow that goes on the road and emulates all the bits of a rally that Trump likes?

Even if he didn't doesn't he hate Trump? Would he not make an exception?

Hopefully Trump is deemed a flight risk and is incarcerated until trial.

Yes, if there's anything the last two and a half years have shown us, it's that Donald Trump doesn't really want to be president.

I don't think DeSantis can afford to alienate the kind of voter that is Trump-friendly but would consider voting DeSantis - his political future might depend on how successfully he can pretend that a Trump arrest is an outrage.

Let us begin with the obvious thing that just happened: This morning, Donald Trump threatened to summon a mob—for the second time in two years—to his defense. The former president of the United States and a leading candidate for the Republican nomination for the White House in 2024, facing a possible indictment in New York, claimed to know the exact day on which he would be arrested and then called on his supporters to “protest.” Trump and his cult know what a call for “protest” means: The last time he rallied his faithful supporters this way, they stormed the U.S. Capitol, which resulted in death and destruction and many, many prison sentences.

Spokespeople from the former president’s office have already walked back Trump’s statement, noting that they have not been told of any specific date for an indictment or an arrest. Indeed, any attempt to book Trump is unlikely to happen as soon as Tuesday, for many reasons. But that’s not the point. Trump’s message today to the American people has already come through loud and clear: I am too dangerous to arrest.

getting a bit 1st c. BC rome here.

also, as every new yorker thought would happen, trump is calling on the police to side with him

this has potential, both in general and because the current DA has been made the poster boy for "everything wrong" with new york. never mind it was trump who sent the mob who got cops killed in DC.
