Donald Trump - MAGAtwat news and discussion

Pelosi bears some of the blame for that as well, there was no need for that impeachment to be rushed - if they'd waited until he left office he could have been done then.

She already had all the votes she needed in the House, I think it was the right call to try and move forward as quickly as possible while the Republican senators whose votes would make the difference were still angry enough to defy Trump, if it had gone to the chamber a few months later I don't think as many as seven of them would have voted for impeachment

Plus, it's too open a question as to whether a former president could be impeached and then tried by the senate. Going after him whilst in office was the only way to guarantee that the impeachment case would be heard at all and not tied up in endless litigation as what was likely to happen when he returned to being a private citizen.

So, the 14th Amendment of the consitution is interesting:

“No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.”

According to this article holy shit, these Federalist Society lawyers want to 14th Amendment the fuck out of Donald Trump this could open the doors to some state legislatures disqualifying Trump as a candidate in their state.

Although I think we know too well by now that none of these 'coulds' lead anywhere sadly.

Wouldn't the only states that do that be the ones that he hasn't got a hope in hell in anyway? E.g. New York, Massachusetts, etc?

If i've read it right then his supporters would need to get two thirds in both houses which is a high bar.

It's an impossibility isn't it. The way it is now if half of them voted that the sky was blue the other half would vote it was pink out of spite. There wouldn't be a two thirds majority for anything.

Not that I think anything will come of it but if it did the congressional vote wouldn't be his route out.

How does this all play out? Any predictions? Most observers reckon he won't go to jail.

I'm not sure but I don't see any good outcomes at this stage. I think...

1) If he gets guilty and goes to jail (highly unlikely) it will galvanise his supporters in the lead-up to the election with the risks that entails.
2) If he gets some variety of guilty and doesn't go to jail he'll be free to crow loudly and publically in the lead-up to the election.
3) If he gets a not guilty he'll crow loudly and publically in the lead-up to the election that the Deep State failed and now vote for him.

I'd say 2) and 3) are the most likely, maybe 3) nudges ahead, maybe after a mistrial/abandonment due to external pressures on the process.

Basically it's a fucking mess and 2024 is going to be a bit of a car crash in the US around this and electoral politics.

It might have been a good idea for the liberal faction of the oligarchy to say to Trump, "look we'll quietly drop the charges so long as you quietly agree to fuck off and never come back". Probably too late for that now, though.

unfortunately a non-starter, the basic fact about him is that he's a narcissist and can't not keep himself in the spotlight. he won't do anything anybody wants. he won't even pledge to support the GOP nominee if it's not him.
the major outlets are culpable, i've had to change my settings as, for example, yahoo news puts him on their front page every day (i have yahoo email accounts (still)).
