I've been conducting listening tests as part of my dissertation, and two young individuals who show general acuity/ skill across all previous tests were able to identify mp3's about two thirds of the time. They were tested 30 times, using 10 different samples of music, each encoded at 3 bit rates: 128kbps, 192kbps, and and 256 kbps.

Neither of them did better at 128kbps, they both did best at 256kbps. I would have expected/ hoped they'd do better at the 128kbps bit rate.... it looks like 128kbps is actually really rather good!! :( :D
at what volume was the test conducted?

I love getting alerts for this thread :D
I hate this thread because it keeps reminding me I'm in the wrong business to become rich easily off the back of fools :(
I might just get me some of those though:
Musical Instruments Chip
Size: diameter 20 mm. Pricing: € 40 a piece. This chip is specifically programmed designed for musical instruments, both acoustical and electrical. This spectacular chip can be placed anywhere on or in the instrument.
I bet it'll improve my band no end :hmm:

I don't have the actual number to hand, but all the tracks were level adjusted to have an equal RMS level, and I calibrated the system (a pair of genelec's in a listening room) using pink noise of an equal rms level, at around 70 dBA.

:D oh wow.. $1149 for a power cable, of unspecified length (possibly 2m?)

I'm too tired and stoned to work out what the fuck they are saying in the article, they seem to claim that longer cables sound better but that more short cables sound better..
Let's not worry about the whole it's the fucking power cables you fucking fuckwits thing. Even beyond that they've gone into some kind of lunatic territory that I can't understand, I'm either too stoned or not stoned enough.

Yes, but only before you open the box and look.

No, it makes perfect sense - they are saying that if you only plug in half your stereo it won't sound as good, I think... :hmm:
Oh fuck it. Surely they are having a laugh.

I have to say though I do like the look of the cabling design wit the three seperately interwoven cables, not the plug though.. but I wonder if it lights up when it's powered. They could put some lights in there that gradually turned on and claim that it takes a bit of time for the power cables to warm up to maximum efficiency and when the light is fully bright the soundscape will be brighter or some such bullshit.
That'd create a strong connection in the person's mind and I bet many would write testimonials about how it works..
I have this feeling that many audiophiles turn on their system and leave it for a short period time before using it to let it warm up already.

I have to admit that his cables are really pretty, but as they'll be at the back of my stack there's no point spending that amount of money.
You might just have hit on a novel way to fleece the suckers and really should register your idea.

I think the punishment for preaching audiophiletology should be to have all their fancy equipment confiscated and replaced with one f those hi-fi systems that were de rigueur around the turn of century. The ones with the really cheap plastic housing and more lights and blinkyness than you could shake a stick at. The ones which when you turned on did a passing impression of the Blackpool Illuminations and had a 5 CD changer which when you played your music on random meant that between each song you were treated to the scratching and clunking of a cheap plastic mechanism.

4_WOW-Record-33rpm.png

Both sides of WOW contain just a single sine tone, the most simple sound there is. Its frequency is directly proportional to the rotation speed of the record player. This means on a standard setting of 33 ⅓ rounds per minute (rpm) you’ll hear an extremely low tone of 33 ⅓ cycles per second (Hz). Play it at 45 rpm and you’ll hear a slightly higher bass tone of 45 Hz.

Ignoring the fact that a lot of home systems won't even reproduce that properly...

I'd quite like 4 of those, to play back together on a massive D&B J series rig with some J-Infra subs. Would be fucking amazing :D

I love their reasoning for double hand polishing the double-gold deoxidized phosphorous bronze power plug pins:

"Does this seem unnecessary? Nobody would go to this trouble if it weren’t audible."

That's got to be satire. Surely. I mean it mention that he lives in Kreuzberg and got his education slumped in front of the tele on the sofa.

That's actually pretty cool. Single tones have bindun though, although maybe not at those frequencies.
I have a test CD that I bought for £1 or something that has a range of single tones from 20Hz up to 20kHz. I imagine I could get my computer to generate one for free with a little effort.

It would indeed sound amazing but I'm pretty sure you can get a sine wave generator or even use your computer to make one for a fuckton less money.

Directly proportional to the spin of the record? Why the hell would that matter???
That's like walking to the shops in 40 seconds only using 40 steps listening to 40hz.

This record spins at a rate directly proportional to the age of a 45 year old man at one single and exact point in time.

so you can charge £404,040 for the original pressing of it of course

Well what I mean is, who is that going to fool? Even an audiophile who is kidding himself that he can hear stuff that isn't there can't deny that an arbitrary speed or the measurement of time don't correlate to sound waves.
