TBH wasn't aware such a thing existed for 12inch records, well even 7inch either just the general size of all players I have ever seen just assumed I suppose it wouldn't be something made portable.

Not familiar with good London market to look round for music any particular ones you'd recommend also?

also, to be honest, unless you are really into vinyl. I wouldn't bother buying any new stuff on the format as it is not cheap and all the new stuff can be brought in digital format online.

I would buy all my new tunes like this and revert to vinyl for tracks that are only on vinyl, maybe second hand using discogs.

Yeah baring maybe a few brand spanking new tracks had intended to buy mostly 2nd hand, are some of the good record shops only new stock then?

the tape & record exchange stores specialise in second hand.

there are a few other famous ones who's names escape me, google is your friend.

Yeah I will just seeing which people recommend after a few people recommending doing the physical shopping thing.

Went to the only record shop in my city which does rock and pop mostly a tiny amount of 80's electronica at silly prices. I know the bloke to speak to and for the last 3-4 month he keeps saying when I ask he has a load of older dance stuff in his storage and will get it out for me to go through and every 4-6 weeks I nip back into his store and he repeats the exact same bloody thing. A unique shop where they don't seem to want to make money or sell anything!

Off to see a mate in March who is in London, decided to put aside a decent amount of cash for the next couple of paydays and take your and others advice to go to the record shops there.
Can you recommend which shops to go to and where abouts ( Underground stops and streets they are on ) they are ( like the phonica or tape & record exchange are ) please, I remember someone telling me there are a couple of good record shops more or less on the same road but have forgotten their names and the location.

Also any places worth looking round the same area to look at for second hand cheap records also? Will be in London for the weekend but intending to go down Friday and spend most of Friday going round the record shops as its not fair to drag my mate round who has no interest in them really plus with him and his misses being teachers should work out nicely if I spend the day shopping then meet them for drinks and stuff when they have finished work. Also with it being a Friday will be able to get anything new out also as i'm assuming new releases in dance music are on this day also?
There's four or five in Soho, including a couple on Berwick Street - famous ones, Sister Ray and Reckless. And a similar number (but much more spread out) around Hoxton sort of way.

Thanks, you have any particular favourites? Hoxton don't think I know that area, considering I have never lived in London and only spent weekends down there I get around pretty well but cannot recall Hoxton will have to Goole maps that one. Are all the ones in the Hoxton area worth exploring given how far apart they are?

All record shops are worth a poke around, and they're all walking distance. But Soho is probably the place to start; Sister Ray and Reckless.

Obliged.
You recommend any for dance music in terms of searching through all over the others or is it just a matter of luck of what stock comes through the doors in the previous weeks?

most of those do dance music, phonica only does dance.

Had any problems going from shop to shop with having purchased from other places? IE the market store / shop thinking you've thieved it, if the receipts are anything like round here you get a total price and that's about all the detail lol. Just not going to have anywhere to go back too to put previous purchases.

I was going to suggest berwick street too a few shops still open, but choccis chewns shut down years ago. Black Market records closed a few years ago too. Kinetecs is now in Hackney, they got quite alot of second hand techno and stuff.

Will have to put Kinetics on me list then, anything else around Hackney area?

Also any shops tend best to avoid such as over pricing and bending the truth on condition and so forth?

I think Vinyl Pimp is put that way, and a little further west you'll find the Hoxton ones I mentioned.

I have some vinyl I wanna get rid of also any of these shops worth taking it into? I know its completely dependant on what it is ect, but I bought some job lots which were a mix of techno and trance and have no interest in the trance but buying in these collections made each vinyl 50pence about.
Will any of these shops buy what I bring in no matter what it is? I'd be happy just to get what I paid for them profit would be great or store credit ect or is it worth finding out instead of hauling the stuff around hoping one of the shops will buy it?

to be honest, rather than dragging it around london, you'd be better off sticking it online, have you heard of or use discogs?

Yeah I use Discogs but tbh don't wanna faff around with them individually I was gonna stick them up on Ebay as a collection to buy as one item but just wondered if it was worth taking them to London to shift.

better online buddy, unless they're quality tunes rather than commercial "top 40" fodder that was on sale in HMV two years ago.

Nothing special tunage wise, what I don't want to keep is Trance/commercial house and the like, and given I would only like to recover my money so most likely put it back up as a job lot again maybe with a buy it now slightly over the money I paid for them to cover the Ebay chargers and the like obviously with a postage as well.

Do you reckon to shift it faster just list some of the better songs I've heard of and just put a brief description? Or would you list all records bearing in mind I just wanna shift them swiftly to make a little space for new and future purchases.

hmmm,

see you admit there is commercial house/trance records in there which are gonna be tough to shift as they age very quickly and probably wasn't very good in the first place.

best off selling as a job-lot on ebay or similar. don't hope for a good return, tbh, you'll be lucky to shift them at all.

they may appeal to someone who is starting out and needs a bunch of tunes to kick start their own collection or just to practice with.

Yeah I wasn't expecting to make on them really but should be able to get 50p a record I'd hope? Even though they are shit - well lets say not my taste ;) But if they end up going to a charity shop it was worth it for the price I got the techno I wanted still vastly cheaper then buying what I got off Discogs and the like.

Hopefully a little creative wording and giving just a few examples of whats in the job lot may help get rid of them.

To be honest, for the second hand stuff, kenetec is quite pricey on some of their stuff, but it's market value. Corrosive #1 is on their website for £40. It's not even that old. But it is the home of stay up forever, so it's where you go for techno/acid and stuff like that, there is no better shop IMO. Give them a ring first, make sure they still are a shop, not been up in a few years so don't know if they've gone online only. Hope not, it's nice to go and handle the goods.

with reguards to selling your tunes, good luck trying to get your money back on commercial stuff. That's highly unlikely. Any shop will have to make a profit, so you'll be lucky if you get 50p for a tune they'll sell on for £2.50. Joblot it online is probably the best bet, unless you have some rare stuff, or things that were anthems in their day. Check the price of each track being sold elsewhere, and work out what you're realisticly going to get for them.

Reckless is berwick street is quite good for second hand, they have a small dance section and it's fairly priced and in good condition. But like I say, they'd probably insult you if you took a load of tracks up to sell.

Thanks, closer to next month will make a list of where I intend to go to and check they are still open and so forth and work out a route to go to get as many shops in as possible. You reckon its possible to get most of or all the record shops in a single day?

Will go through the records I wanna get rid of might be one or two I don't know that are worth a few quid, only need 3 or 4 like that to get the money back I spent on them. But as I knew when I bought the job lots the money I saved on what I wanted was worth buying the job lot and knew it would probably be unlikely to get next to anything for the stuff I didn't want. Most likely be a waste of time and effort carting them around London with me so will check them on discogs and sell them as a single job lots with maybe some creative description and a very low starting price.

If you set out early, you could probably do them all in 1 day. Kinetecs is a little out of the way and is in an industrial unit, not a shop so don't be fooled by the outside, probably about half hour from the center/berwick street. But in Soho most of the shops are within walking distance so that shouldn't be a problem.
