Digital DJ’s of urban…

tbh, I've bot heard one latley but it's widely reported that most of the newish mixers or controllers have poor phono pre amps.

something to do with pioneer wanting people to buy more digital stuff which i find kinda strange as they also do a range of turntables

Some of the older controllers have poor pre amp (I have an SR2, Serato controller with pre amps, designed purely for DVS, records sound terrible), but the newer ones sound good. There's a lot of nonsense spouted online.

plus I don't like the mixer section, I much prefer allen & heath

I used to have a Xone64 with CDJ's, sure they do give an inner sense of elitism (my ears aren't good enough to notice the audio benefits) which was worth it's weight in gold against all my basic mates that all had the DJM600...But the headphone cue system was utter utter pony, especially for mixing at home. Not being able to pre mix in headphones gradually is not only really restricting, it just screams design arrogance that they don't think DJ's need it so won't allow it. How anyone fucked up the simple 2 knobs and channel cue buttons that pioneer does is beyond me

I do like all the fx on their mixer tho, if they had better phono amps i would deffo look into getting one

i think the most important thing is having kit that suits what you do and want to do and above all gives you the most pleasure
i.e
if you want to start playing out at venues that only have CDJs then getting compatible with that is important
how important is having a big screen
how much do you love a particular mixers action + effects etc etc

tiny differences in sound quality are low on the list for me

At the level of kit we’re talking about here, “sound quality” really isn’t a thing. It’s all as good as DJ kit gets. Any slight differences vanish the moment you connect it all up, start mixing and apply effects.

Syncing beat fx is the main one I can think of, I think the newer Pioneer mixers also have a cue preview where you can preview a track without loading to a deck.
I use external effects unit via the fx send and return on my mixer. currently i have a boss re202 space echo and will be adding a delay soon as well

Round up of 2024 DJ tech from a guy who does know what he is talking about

big thing for me is that Pioneers buy up for Serato officially blocked for the foreseeable and that Rekordbox remain an ugly dislikeable bit of software.
Also hopefully Pioneers rebrand as Alpha Theta has not gone well and hopefully the beginning of the end for them.
Another interesting comment made was he says CDJs are too expensive and is increasingly seeing controllers in clubs!

So I've used this a few times professionally now and can really, really recommend it if you're looking for an ultra-portable, compact set up. No faffing about with laptops or cables!

whats the build quality like on the buttons and faders would you say?
I'll probably buy one of these towards the end of the year

It's pretty robust but I doubt if it'll take a full on hammering!

I did a 5 hour set on NYE and the machine performed flawlessly. The built in speakers and battery are surprisingly useful for firing up the unit for a quick practice too, and I love being able to keep a SD card stuffed full of songs in the unit, as well as 2xUSB ports for back up.

There's a more in depth review here:

Perhaps a little bit more robust - but without the speakers - is the Denon Prime Go, which also uses the excellent Engine OS, which has just been updated to include stems.

yeah those are the two im weighing up
i prefer the look of the Denon and the build sounds to be better
Main problem on Denon is only one USB slot, whereas Numark has two so you can handover smoothly to next DJ if you do take it out...tbh I want this for the living room so not a big issue but still a bit crap as its the kind of thing to take to a house party

If you're mainly going to be using it at home, I reckon you'll find the built in speakers of the Numark really useful. Power it up and you're ready to go and you can take it around the house if you so desire, no faffing about with cables needed!!

i already have developed a DJing in bed/sofa habit with this little DJ2GO thing, but it does need a laptop still

I'll likely wait and see what the next round of gear looks like i think...especially what with the whole Alpha Theta Serato bullshit

It was the whole plugging in cables and booting up laptops thing that put me off using controllers.

The thing that is quite exceptional about Engine OS is the sheer number of system updates they keep pumping out, all adding useful new features.

I can't imagine me ever buying into any other OS now.

I need a good size screen - thats what makes digital DJing better - being able to see information about the tracks - CDJs screens are too limited - this really does look great - Im sold! Its the future really. Glad you are having a good experience.

A good screen is great - I barely ever need headphones now, can see everything I need to cue tracks from a waveform :)
Don't you ever want to hear what you're going to play next to make sure it's the right choice?

Each to their own and all that, but DJing by waveform display sure seems a bit clinical to me!

I found that I knew (and to some extent heard) the music by looking at the record cover. Never quite worked out how to do that with digital. Everything looks the same, just a list of stuff. Maybe it's just me.

These days I'd put my back out trying to lift a needle, let alone a box full of records mind.

That's one of the many things that stopped me pursuing it. That and not being arsed to rip my vinyl.

I did think of taking a pic of the sleeves but then it all just seemed like hard work

There’s nothing in my playlists I don’t know, so don’t need to hear anything beforehand to know if it’s the right track or not. In my vinyl days headphones were to find my desired cue point, now I’ve either already set various hotcues beforehand or the shape of the waveform tells me everything I need to know.

I literally often don't know what I'm playing next as I keep changing my mind. I try to be totally guided by the crowd so am always ready for an emergency genre switch!

Market House in Brixton was the toughest gig for that: get one song wrong and the crowd would stampede to the bigger downstairs bar - and the demographic would keep changing in front of my eyes!

I get that. But I know what every track on my hard drive sounds like, so I can “hear” them in my head when deciding what to play iyswim…

Do you plan playlists in advance? I know loads of DJs do but for the crowds I play to, it would be a disastrous strategy!

I have to be nimble like a frolicking lamb, ready to bin cued-up songs and then scrambling to find a better choice as the clock runs down.
