Delyn MP Rob Roberts

PR1Berske

Alligator in chains by the park gates.
It is being reported in a couple of Sunday newspapers that Conservative MP Rob Roberts will be suspended by the House of Commons following a Standards Committee report into his conduct. Roberts texted sexually inappropriate messages to an intern and was, briefly, suspended by the parliamentary party.

Under the provisions of the Recall of MPs Act, if the suspension is longer than 10 sitting days, his constituents in Delyn will have the opportunity to sign a petition that would lead to his expulsion and a by-election.

This could be a very interesting one, even with a Govt as (bizarrely) popular as the current one is, a majority of 865 when the sitting MP leaves under a cloud should be winnable for the Opposition. The outcome makes no difference to BoZo but If Labour loses this and Batley & Spen, Starmer is likely to have a bit of a civil war on his hands.
If the Tories have the sense to pick a sane candidate especially given if they pick a woman (thus breaking from Roberts misdeeds) then I suspect they will keep it.

Losing this won't damage Starmer because it's already a Tory seat. The kind of total humiliation he suffered in Hartlepool would though. Personally, I'd vote Tory for that reason alone.

It will a little given that it was regarded as part of the Welsh end of the Red Wall and very marginal. Given the 'new management' schtick of Sir Kieth failure to win it back would further damage his brand. Maybe not irreparably but another bit chipped away.

Worst case scenario would be losing it by a much wider margin than in 2019 as the Tory vote shows up and Labour's stays home. Which is very plausible indeed

Bet it is nine days ...

Seriously what is it with these people?

Indeed. The previous incumbent of Hartlepool left under something of a cloud.

From Wiki.

Hill is due to face an employment tribunal later in the year following allegations of sexual harassment and victimisation.[4] Hill was suspended from the Labour Party in September 2019 over allegations of sexual harassment, but reinstated in October 2019.[10] In January 2020, Hill's request for anonymity was turned down in an upcoming employment tribunal related to the accusations. The alleged victim stated that she had also made a report to the Metropolitan Police at the time of the original accusations.[11] On 16 March 2021, Hill announced his resignation with immediate effect.[4]
