David Cameron: socialists have no sense of humour

Ironically LLETSA would have done well in about 1983. Just walked on stage and said, deadpan, "I believe humanity is doomed. I give it 50 years, tops. It's the way I tell 'em".

I always find it curious that no matter what the political beliefs of those you talk to, if you express the slightest amount of pessimism everybody starts going on about you supposedly thinking humanity is doomed. Whatever that's supposed to mean; nobody quite makes themselves clear. I've come to the conclusion that coming from the same glib, shallow media-saturated culture (and actually loving what they're spoon-fed), most people in this society think the same and that political differences are cosmetic. Against all the evidence a bright future beckons, whether it's 'the free market' , anarcho-communism or some such, or even the absurdest of all, 'racial nationalism.' And it's actually all very funny.

That's what they were known as in the 1980s and there's a direct line of descent down to the present day. Most of them are about as funny now as they were then. That is to say not funny at all.

Sir Ben of Elton once had a routine about how nobody ever wants to empty the bin and the absurd bin-jenga that goes on as more and more people balance shit on the top rather than empty it. That was the last time he was funny, circa 1987 iirc. Which I probably don't because I was 4 and only saw the routine later in life.

It explains quite a lot now you've said you were only four in 1987.

mm, I had you pegged at about late 50's- old enough to have seen the great lurch rightwards etc.

I left schoool at 16 and had been working four years when you were born. Far from lurching rightwards I'm still far to the left of most of the cardboard rebels who hang around sites like these. It's just that most people seem to mistakenly believe you can't be left wing if you see no hope for the human race.

Old enough 'to have seen' not being that yourself ffs. I've read enough of your contributions to see that you are not right wing- you're just very very pessimistic.

And I, on the other hand, find myself amazed that there are still people of your generation who despite the near disappearance of the left's historical project, 'take up the cause.' I genuinely respect that.

funny and sexy so go pish up a rope posho boy

So that shining wit Cameron follows up last week's Winner-quoting PM's questions with a phrase from Benny Hill's "Ernie".

Something from Terry Thomas next week will probably end me.

I reserve the right to remain relentlessly optimistic, comrade.

so do i - if i'm being completely honest with myself my views are probably a lot closer to lletsa's a lot of the time, but i keep going because well ... we have to. we have no choice.

Even pessimists have to 'keep going', you know.

And I bet they have more of a laugh than most optimists.

And you would know. ;)

I'm not that pessimistic though. I'm not pessimistic enough not to fight back. Fuck it it perhaps won't do any good but we have to show some sort of oppostion.

It isn't something exclusively tied to left wing politics. Given the inevitable failure of everything to live up to expectations, there will be plenty of neo-cons/neo-liberals, fascists etc etc who have ended up disappointed at the results of their endeavours, and a few wiser ones who just knew that disappointment was inevitable.

If it's any comfort, with hindsight even experiences which were thoroughly shite at the time can start to appear like good times.

It's the way it is, suckers.
