Cull bollox A-levels, says Royal Society

He actually can't smell. As it happens, he doesn't have a nose. :(

No, I meant what does he smell like? You've inadvertently read that question as if I were asking what mechanism he used to detect substances from the chemicals they emit into the surrounding air.

You seemed to be saying that a scientist would appreciate a rose more than anyone else. Seems rather arrogant to me. They may appreciate a rose in a different way, but without some kind of objective scale as to what are better and worse ways to appreciate beauty, your point is rubbish.

Not really, at that point I'm pretty sure it was light-hearted banter rather than a serious argument. My understanding of beauty initially doesn't from science at all, I did the gardening bit long before that, but certainly I think having some knowledge of the scientific side can add to the beauty of something (as, of course, can seeing it from a different different perspective).

No, I didn't say he did. He did quite clearly imply a lesser degree of emotional intelligence though.

He didn't actually. He was responding to my post speculating - somewhat light-heartedly - on what would happen if all that was taught was hard sciences. You perceived a point that was never made.

Arse.

Feynman sums this up, I forget the story and the details, but essentially it's something like this; you see the beauty of a rose. I see the beauty of a rose too, but I also I see the beauty of the systems that make the rose function, I see the cells and their interactions, I see the molecules, I see the atoms, I see the subatomic particles. A scientist sees infinite layers of beauty and complexity, you just see a rose.
Oh,ffs!I'm not saying scientists can't perceive beauty, merely that a society that only uses science to understand/appreciate our world iso one that's deprived of Important things.
Which science did you use to massively misread me,there?:p:D

The way I look at it is, that science attempts to look at our world objectively but has very little to say about our subjective experience. That is the realm of art, music, literature, religion, poetry etc.

I realise your point was in jest, having an in-depth understanding of those characteristics not in any way related to my actual ability to bring them into everyday life. I, personally, perceived that he was using it as a vehicle to make a point 'in jest', revelling in his actual feelings whilst covering his tracks with the veneer of humour.

the art of the how not the why. Fuck, pale blue dot should inspire even the most flinty of hearts

But at the theoretical end science is about why. Once you get to the study of a theory you strive for objectivity of course, but coming up with the theory is basically just philosophy with a lot more equations.

Educational failings 'scandalous'

Knuckledrag Nation here we come...

:(

One has to wonder why a professor of "public sector management" (my emphasis) was thought to be equipped to conduct a review of vocational education.

One also has to wonder why Dr. Jon appears to believe that this review/and or the personal views of the professor presage the arrival of a nation of knuckledraggers.

perhaps he wishes to see his misanthropy validated?

The UK's historical advantage has been in churning out independent thinkers - that's why the world's elites send their kids to get educated here. Why are we trying to jettison this and mimic the East Asian model of churning out thousands of unhappy and de-motivated human maths engines?

If you spend your time hanging around in shitty discount pubs, then yeah, you'll probably see a lot of knuckledraggers. You probably are one too, in fact, so don't get so sneery about them!

It's quite impressive that you managed to pack so many false premises and distortions in just two and a half lines of text.
