Croydon - nightlife, accommodation, things to do and general chat

Saw this on some sort of QI podcast recently. It's on my Christmas list.
Might be just full of the usual stuff though.
I shall be on the lookout for that. The trouble is Croydon is between London and Brighton, but no where near half way. 10 miles to London, 50+ to Brighton šŸ¤”

I'm confused. What has Brighton got to do with this?

EDIT

Oh I see, you are referring to the book blurb two posts previous.

Having reached the age of 18, Hassan Sentamu can now legally be named as the person who has admitted killing 15 year-old schoolgirl Elianne Andam in the centre of Croydon as she made her way to school on on 27 September 2023:

Proceedings are now active in this case and nothing should be reported that could risk prejudicing those proceedings.

At the opening of the murder trial of Old Palace of John Whitgift Schoolgirl, Elianne Andam, at the Old Bailey today, CCTV footage revealed the moment that her killer, Croydon College
sports science student, Hassan Sentamu, ran towards her just moments before stabbing her to death.

Hassan Sentamu has admitted manslaughter but denied Elianneā€™s murder on the basis of ā€œloss of controlā€ because he has autism.

Hassan Sentamu had broken up with his girlfriend, a friend of Elianne Andam, ten days earlier, and they had agreed to meet on the morning of the stabbing to exchange possessions.

Hassan Sentamu attended the planned meeting wearing gloves and a face covering, and in possession of a kitchen knife, and eventually drove it 12cm into Elianne's neck, severing her carotid artery.

Jurors were told by the trial judge, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb, that they would have to decide whether the defendantā€™s autism offered him a defence in law and whether it provided an explanation for his actions:

The trial continues.

We had an urban drinks meet up there. Not long before it closed for good.
I meant The Ship in the centre of Croydon - the heavy metal, goth, punky one. They have a quiz night coming up.

I remember the SLD last night the Ship in SoNo, very fondly. We drank them dry, everything that could go wrong did go wrong, flooding and broken furniture but it was a fantastic night out.

Oh yeah!

what did it look like?
the grrrl said it looked much the same over 30 years ago when she last frequented it
I have not had a drink in there for about 10 years, but yeah it still looked the same.
I remember I went on a week night and it was tottaly empty.
Big long empty hallway space. Quite weird and uninviting. Like they are expecting everyone to stand big groups at tge bar rather than get comfortable.

I cant begin to imagine.... only 14
Thanks, i will go out of my way to pass business his way

It sounds as though he needs as much support as he can get:

"A 50-year-old man has been rushed to hospital after a shooting in New Addington.

The incident happened in Godric Crescent near King Henryā€™s Drive just before 11.40pm on December 23 ..."

Godric Crescent New Addington shooting: Man in hospital

"The victim of a shooting in New Addington earlier this week was Julius Cools, the father of Jermaine Cools, one of Croydonā€™s tragic teenaged victims of knife crime ..."

Man shot in New Addington is father of murdered teenager

I have a friend who has just moved back to New Addington and it sounds like he has moved into some sort of Armageddon type nightmare.
It's weird. I remember going there when I was looking for houses. . . as soon as we stepped off the tram it felt very very wrong, like something was in the air. The estate agent was supposed to meet us at the station but never turned up and never contacted us ever again.
New Addington is on one of my regular running routes now and even though we stood at that tram stop for some time I really can't say exactly which one it was. . . . but also, I don't get that creepy vibe from the area. Maybe because I enter from the rather nice countryside that surrounds it.
It seems like a fairly small area.

yeah its not great...sprawling low level estates for miles and thats literally it...barely a shop pub or anything else save an industrial estate...though there is a tram now and its on the edge of the countryside

It's a very weird place.
It should be quite nice. I wouldn't describe they low level estates as 'sprawling for miles'. It's fairly nicely spread out with decent housing for the most part, and it's really not that big. The main drag is small and a bit of a 'drag', but maybe that it was historically a small estate build to house some poorer people with little to no transport to any major areas. . . but there are loads of affluent areas very nearby that don't have the same issues.
It has some pretty fabulous countryside all around it, but when I wander through I barely see a soul.

Wasn't Addington built as somewhere affordable to live with somewhere nearby to work which was to the South towards Biggin Hill...is that industrial part still there.
It's a shame because it's relatively low build and low density with quite a lot of green and/or open spaces. How many estates can you say that about.

Yeah it's a shame it could be amazing in theory. It's very much got an end of the world feel to it, because it is basically the end of greater London.

I used to go to the pool there as a kid. They had a water slide

Addington village at the bottom of the hill (two tram stops away) is almost picture postcard cottages.
After new Addington you are just beginning to get into the countryside tradition of narrow roads with no pavements.

Iā€™ve driven through New Addington loads, though not really for a decade; had friends in Biggin Hill and Forestdale so the route between is via that rather scary steep hill

Its location canā€™t help being a housing estate cutoff from anywhere else. So a distinct local identity linked to territory? Not really many amenities so going to Croydon for most things. I also think that while surrounded by countryside IIRC itā€™s mostly farmed land and not really accessible. Must feel like an open prison if you donā€™t have access to transport ?

It's quite big, about 3km from end to end and a population of 22,000. The high st does have quite a few shops probably the usual number for a town that size. It is still quite deprived but now the tram gives a fast frequent route to Croydon is has improved.

It was originally built to house the people displaced from central Croydon when they demolished much of the town centre.

Think New Addington is relatively unusual in London as an 'overspill' estate quite distant from any town centre (although Thamesmead has / had similarities) - it does have a bit of a feel of the sort of overspill estate on a windswept hillside outside one of the midlands / northern cities...

Browsing around, I just looked up one of my old haunts, the Old Jail. Sad to see it's closed. Looking in the other direction, I haven't been back to the White Bear since the refurb.

Tried to go to the White Bear on Sunday...my friend is obsessed with it?! Anyway it was rammed and we hadn't booked so couldn't get in. The Yorkshire puddings looked good!
