Climate Doomsters. Are you one? I am.

I read a good article about the -'big one' that will basically destroy the NW coast of US and Canada. Sounds fun - catastrophic earthquake followed by a tsunami. There is also evidence riding sea levels can cause volcanic eruptions - you've got a few of them in that part of the world too.

Best to always wear your water wings 24/7 just in case.
We've had two small to medium ones i've felt in the last seven years i've been here. But when Cascadia goes it'll be brutal. I've got a full SHTF pack in my apartment and a cut down version to get me home in the rucksack i take to work. Makes life more interesting lol!

What gets me is the War on Plastic and War on Food Waste is solely consumer focused.

A reusable carrier bag shouldn't absolve the companies pissing out individual shrink wrapped Spanish grown cucumbers or chocolate bars of responsibility for only peddling this shit.

I recycle everything I'm allowed, compost food waste, re-purpose other things, and I still have 1 garbage bag full of nothing but plastic waste at the end of the month.

While I will not deny that climate change will be a challenge in the next century, I can't be a "doomer." I've looked closely at that movement and almost to a man, they are unrepentant mysogynists. Some of them believe the notion that women will "get back in their place" if everything collapses and we have to go back to the way things were before our technological society. They're like the Evangelical Christians, who long for Armageddon, instead of fearing it..
I don't see a gender split on this. My take is that if we'd had a matriarchy we wouldn't be in this mess. And some of the doomsters are women, including one of the most influential ones: Catherine Ingram, Facing Extinction

I think there's at least 50% chance of civilisational collapse in the next 50 years and that should be driving everyone to force action now. There's a school of thought that it's already too late, try reading the deep adaptation paper by jem bendell if you want to get really depressed.

But I'm probably more hopeful than six months ago. The scale of the change required is beginning to sink in I think. Some of the key policies are becoming mainstream. It's becoming impossible to make a coherent argument for business as usual in the face of the science.

Where did I suggest we need a matriarchy? I think you need to explain what you mean by the term "doomster." There's a very specific movement out there calling themselves "doomers" that are cheering on destruction and near-term human extinction. There seems to be some cross-over in that group with survivalists, Derick Jensen, Guy McPherson, and a few MRA types. There's some seriously fringey fringe types out there. I'm just trying to figure out if you're one of them or not.

I'm all in now. I remember the XR thread going up here on Urban and I started reading around the subject pretty much straight away. My best reference/reccomendation is the BBC Global Dimming docu eta (BBC - Press Office - Horizon global dimming) made long enough ago for some quite startling comparisons to 2018/2019.

In fact, I'm seriously considering getting fitter and healthier so I can see as much of it as possible.

What gets me is that for every 1 person trying to highlight the issue and do something about it there seem to be 10 shouting that they're a hypocrite. I think we might need an amnesty on finger pointing.
For me it's not about hypocrisy it's about getting priorities right. It's like i'll go (walk) to the liquor store and ask for a plastic bag for my purchases (which i use as a bin liner afterwards). And i get a funny look. My local store is on a main route way with cars flying up and down the road outside.

Fuck no. We're in for a rough century, no doubt about that, but I'll be damned if I join the ranks of the latter-day flagellants. Misanthropic self-fulfilling bullshit.

Please reread my posts. It was me who said we need a matriarchy. I've felt that way since I first met radical feminists at university in the 80s. Everything they said about the patriarchy was right. You want to lump me in with some people and movements I've never heard of. I wish you wouldn't. I've never been a survivalist. I live in a small flat in London which is not full of beans and crossbows. And as I said before, I think the UK will be fine. If there is a large scale cull of humans and societal collapse I would love a matriarchy to emerge. But it won't. People will crowd around the loud, aggressive men with the most weapons, as per usual.

i'm not sure a large scale cull of people coupled with societal collapse offer the best conditions for the emergence of a matriarchy.

tbh what makes me more pessimistic isn't that people are starting to do shit, it's that new shit keeps emerging and there's shit which hasn't even been factored into the current models, shit like emissions from shipping. so yeh the scale of the change required is beginning to sink in. some of the key policies are becoming mainstream, here at least. and yes it is becoming impossible to make a coherent argument for business as usual in the face of the science. but the news coming from the arctic and antarctic is pretty fucking grim.

If I had kids I'd totally become a prepper. As it is I'm happy to look forward to roaming the scorched wasteland eating rats and sucking fluid from eyeballs responsibility free.
i've always imagined you as a prepper with a great long beard like the man in this picture

True. And fwiw the climate change and its consequential right-wing kickback are doing nothing for women's rights right now, even.

All I foresee is desertification, fires, floods, famine, drought and millions of refugees. A sequence of irreversible disasters is lined up. And that's just the things we know about. Things we only half know about, like changes in ocean currents and insect loss, will turn out to be worse than suspected. Food chains will collapse. The population will halve. The good news is that the UK will be fine. The Channel will keep the refugees out. New food technology will compensate for reduced imports. Northern Russia will eventually become farmland, so Putin's successors will be able to bully the West with wheat prices after we've stopped needing their gas.

... And as I said before, I think the UK will be fine...

In the face of everything you mention in your OP, if you think for one minute that the UK will be fine then you are seriously fucking deluded...

The spanish salad thing is a particular bugbear of mine. Miles and miles and miles of plastic. All over andalusia. :(
And all that energy transporting basically bags of air with some green bits across the world. People in the UK should forgo such waste and eat turnips instead.
