Christian Bale losing it

Emotional scene in Terminator 4? :hmm: :D

boy meets girl. boy falls in love with girl. girl gets gang raped on a pinball machine by a group of drunken Terminators in a post-apocalyptic bar. boy can't look her in the eye no more and seeks revenge...

fucking production assistant ruins the scene by chatting and and whistling in the background - and boy threatens to smash him in.

Ban the morning news team!! and Christain Bale! And....er, that's it.

Interesting post from the imdb boards. Puts it in a bit of perspective. Sounds like Bales rant was the end of a number of incidents by Hurlburt.

Greetings IMBDers!

I have had the displeasure of working with Mr. Hurlbut on 2 productions, and in both cases I was extremely put off by his arrogance and brazen disregard for set ettiqutte. The fact that he pushed Bale to the point of getting a serious beatdown is something that he had a long time coming as far as I'm concerned.

I think its unfortunate that this is going to end up bad for Bale, because he was totally in the right to put Hurlbut in his place. If you are rolling film you simply DO NOT go waltzing across the set. You shouldn't even be moving because the mics can pick up your footsteps! Not to mention that Actors are trying to get into a zone and play a part, having the DP bouncing around is definitely a distraction and definitely a transgression worth punishing.

Frankly I think that McG and the AD are also to blame here, because they both should have told the DP to sit the F down when rolling. But my experience of Hurlbut leads me to the conclusion that even if they had asked him nicely to behave in a proper fashion he would have disregarded them anyways. That's the kind of arrogance I've seen him display. I suspect that this sort of public humiliation is the only thing that would get through to his brain.

People who don't work in the film business simply can't understand what happened there, and it's unfortunate because that will be a serious mar on Bale's record. Film sets are intense, high-pressure areas, and every wasted minute is a lot of money down the drain. And every wasted second of film is even more expensive. If the DP doesn't understand that he has no place in this business. End of story.

As I'm concerned, Bale just got a bunch of points in my book and I'm extremely satisfied knowing that someone put this douchebag in his place.

Karmically speaking, Hurlbut had it coming in so many ways.

Gotta say, having read that and the similar post on AICN - and having been on a few sets myself - I'm inclined to come down on Bale's side. It's just unfortunate for him that between this and the "attacking his sister" thing (which, IIRC, was actually one of those wildly over-exaggerated "assault" claims that actually just involved fucking shouting at someone), Bale is getting a reputation as being a bit of a psycho.

Of course, the publicity machine is in overdrive trying to salvage Bale's reputation; I have no doubt that there are people flooding IMDB with positive quotes at the behest of his agent and the studio behind Terminator Salvation...

If we have a person in my office who keeps making mistakes, it's not acceptable to scream at them and threaten them and even less so if it takes place in front of everyone else we both work with.

Hmmm, depends...

Nah. From every angle - legal, interpersonal, basic human decency etc. - Bale was in the wrong. Not saying it's cool to wander across film sets but Bale's behaviour overshadows the original offence for me.

In an office yeah, but film sets are different, everything is geared to that 20 seconds or so after the 1st AD has called "action".

It's tense, often deliberately.

Hmmmmmmm........you never hear about Alan Rickman shitting a brick on someone's face though, do you? It's not as if every and all actors are notorious for being insane shouty wankers is it?

Yeah but if Rickman was doing $100million movies and endless dull retakes of a scene, in a franchise that is pretty fucking tired already....

Alright, Ian McKellen then. Or Christopher Lee. Or Ewan McGregor or etc. etc.

Yeah but the first two have years and years of experience, and I reckon McGregor has probably kicked off but just been lucky not to have been audiotaped doing it... having watched The Long Way Round/Down...

It seems the best bits weren't put on the DVD, i.e. McGregor shouting at the bug-eyed fat friend nobody ever heard of who moaned a lot.

To give you an idea, theres a fight in a film called Reign of Fire between Bale and Mathew Mc Connaughty, they shot this punch up between the two for 2 day, from over 27 camera angles.

There was even a take where Mc Connaughty accidently head butted Bale for real, both were wearing radio mikes, and there was a boom going as well, so we were treated with the very really dull thud of bone thumping on bone, and the audible "ooooooohhhhhh" from the watching crew.
