Chips: Salt or Vinegar first

What goes on first?

You want the vinegar afterwards to dissolve and distribute some of the salt - I thought every sensible person knew that? Evidently moose and sojourner don't - I thought you were northerners? :(
You are wrong, cock.
I have vinegar then salt added in the shop, so the salt can stick to the surface, then wash it down with another liberal splash of Sarsons when I get home.

Brown sauce is terrific and all, but though I'd be happy enough with it on a chip if was having sausage and chips, I wouldn't choose it ahead of ketchup or mayo if was having just chips.

Brown for sausages or egg
Red for bacon or chips
Mayo for chips

When I get a burger from the takeout I have mayo in the burger and ketchup on my chips

Even the thought of mayo makes me want to hurl

At the risk of oversharing about what goes on in the depths of my diseased brain, one of my great formative crushes was on someone whose favoured chip shop order was a chip butty* with garlic mayo, and to this day I sort of think of a chip butty with garlic mayo as being a meal that has a certain sort of romance and glamour attached to it.

Have we had anyone arguing for curry sauce yet? I reckon we need a new poll, "what's the second-best condiment to put on chips after ketchup?"

* god, hadn't even thought about the butty/barm/cob/whatever the fuck controversy till now

Not on pizza. To dip. Not posh pizzas like domino’s. The little frozen ones from Asda.
I make chimichuri to dip my pizza crusts. Or warmed butter with garlic thinly sliced and cooked gently in the butter. Needs a little oil to stop the butter burning.

Curry sauce allowable, if it's good.

It's clear that early experience stunted your pallette's development, hence the ketchup issue.

Chip butties with garlic mayo...ace! 👍

Curry chips...👍

Vinegar first. It’s simple logic. Not only does the vinegar act as glue for the salt, as all right-thinking posters have said, but it stops the salt from being washed away.

The correct amount of vinegar on a bag of chips is “enough that your eyes water from the fumes.” Now, if you’re having some weak little sprinkle of vinegar, I can see it might leave the salt intact. But if the proper amount of vinegar is anointing your chips, it will have washed away the salt you’ve pointlessly applied beforehand.

Drench, then shake. It’s the only right way.
