If there were millions of Lions, Rhino, Leopards, Tigers etc then hunting them in small numbers wouldn't be so bad, but there aren't so it isn't.

With the amount of attention the man attracts, I hope he goes to Tanzania and starts killing elephants - what used to be the greatest herds on the planet have been systematically wiped out by poachers over the last few years and it didn't get nearly as much publicity as Cecil the lion.

Some people do. I used to hunt for animals for cash (not trophy animals) when I was a teenager and have gone completely the other way in my old age. At the time it seemed like a good way to make money for school.

Raccoons mostly (for pelts). Nothing endangered. Even back then, we knew you can't over hunt a species.
