Cecil, famous Lion from Zimbabwe shot dead by Dentist from Minnesota for $55k

Put it this way - Palmer probably got his money to hunt Cecil and the other victims of his archery as a product of charging lots of dollars to fix teeth. If the publicity surrounding this episode means that he can't get enough customers in the future then his trophy hunting holidays will be curtailed. Ditto anyone else up to similar tricks.

Relativist claptrap, some things are actually more important than others. Whilst people in Palestine, Zimbabwe or anywhere else are being killed and oppressed there is always something to say.

The FEB thread must surely die now!

I'm probably going to say something many people won't like. You can't be an environmentalist and a carnivore at the same time. Meat production is one of the biggest things that's causing deforestation, habitat loss, overuse of water, and greenhouse gas emissions.
People might not like it because it's true, the second overuse of resources is fossil fuel generation.
But bugger it, let our bairns and grandbairns sort it.
In the meantime lets amuse ourselves by destroying endangered species for the fun of it.

Cecil the lion: Oxford University defends links to 'trophy hunting' companies

Oxford University has defended itself after it emerged that its research into African wildlife is funded by companies that support "sustainable trophy hunting".

Cecil the lion, shot in Zimbabwe last month by an American dentist, was being studied by Oxford University's Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU).

Professor David Macdonald, who founded WildCRU, said there was no conflict of interest between its work and sources of funding.

He said: "We simply do our work. There is no risk of any donor affecting our results - we report our results regardless of whether they state any particular point of view or not.
...

The plot thickens ..

yeh. but it would be nice if you made sure that you said something worth hearing.

That being the case, imagine my surprise when a quick glance at your recent posting history reveals that there are no comments about people in Palestine, Zimbabwe or anywhere else being killed and oppressed, but fucking loads complaining about people commenting about the death of this lion

Note the price tag of a "holiday" home --- that guy has far too much money from fixing teeth !

This cunt didn't get his money through his own hard work, he married a woman who'd inherited a shit load.

Just like aristo cunts everywhere.

CTR invest in bricks, lots of walls will be required.

There's really no point in bothering. There's only three females left. That's too small a number for them to ever recover. They're functionally extinct. The only thing that might be possible is to breed them with another sub-species and then breed the resulting offspring for the proper traits. That's what was done with bison. They were interbred with cattle and then rebred back.

The Sumatran rhino is now considered extinct in the wild in the Southeast Asian country of Malaysia, according to a new study.

No wild Sumatran rhinos (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) have been found on the Malaysian peninsula since 2007, and what are thought to be the last two female rhinos in Malaysian Borneo were caught and placed in captive breeding programs in 2011 and 2014.

Now, fewer than 100 of the species remain in the wild, researchers estimate, distributed among three wild populations on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

quote I read a bit back sums that shit up 'we have comitted a crime..no...a sin'

It seems to be yet another of those uncomfortable do what we say, not what we did situations. We had wild forests and wild animals but we cut them down and killed the wild animals, now we are wringing our hands and saying that people in Africa and India etc etc should not do as we did.

yes because the indian people and african people are directly analagouse to the iron age tribes of europe.
I don't really get your point DC. I am saying that in the process of development Britain / Europe got rid of many wild places and most wild animals but are now bemoaning the fact that others seem to want to do the same.

I'm saying that when we'd only just learned to smelt pig iron, stop fucking our sisters and considering the dung pile to be a technological innovation, we knew no better. People in what they call the developing world do know better. They are not the 'savages' of iron age some light years behind us. They might not have what resources we have and get pretty annoyed when ellie comes stomping over the crops, but they know to leave them be. They won't be here for long. Thats why the majority of killing rare large fauna is now the preserve of poachers and scum looking to make obscene money selling horns and heads and hides as prizes. We murdered our wildlife a long time ago before the idea of conservation even existed and even then took second place to self preservation. Which is why we've had to re-introduce wolves and red kites and all the other species wiped from our landscape in the name of efficient agriculture (not advocating neo-tribalism here, the life of the hunter gatherer is days of long and boring shite)

The cowardly foreskinbubbleofvomit has done an interview.

When Palmer was asked about the hunt itself, he cited his initial statement in defense of his actions, while Friedberg said, “Everything was done properly. This was a legal hunt for a lion in Zimbabwe. And because of the professionalism of the people who had to help him, a lion was taken.”

Walter Palmer speaks: Hunter who killed lion will resume Bloomington dental practice Tuesday
Reader comment nails it:
He still doesn't get it. The public outrage. Its not that it was Cecil, it was killing endangered/threatened species for fun. No consideration for them at all. The animal suffered for close to 2 days before getting killed and he says meh *shrug*. There's no remorse for this slime of a person.

maybe he should contact the Germans who allegedly organised "hunting" trips to former Yugoslavia he could go pot some Daesh its win win
either the Jihadists kill him or he kills some of them at least the daesh could shoot back:hmm:

If the slime ball is going back to work, maybe the locals should have another picket ... a bit like the one when the news first broke.
That *might* put some of his customers off, especially given how much "cosmetic" dentistry costs.

It would be nice if there was lasting change as a result of all the angst and anger that arose from the killing of Cecil. I think canned hunting is particularly unnatural and perhaps even barbaric and wonder if people could have an impact on that. That said, the level of outrage, as one might expect, has somewhat declined in the months since the actual killing.

The trouble is that hunting is seen in Africa as a part of conservation and has been going on for many years both of wild animals and the canned variety. It is a part of the economy and as such would be difficult to restrict.

There is a market for photographic tours and that does bring in money but perhaps not at the moment on a scale comparable with traditional or canned hunting.
