Cecil, famous Lion from Zimbabwe shot dead by Dentist from Minnesota for $55k

At what point would you consider the world wrecked? Seems like the time is already here, and the capitalists don't seem to be going anywhere.
blood running in the gutters. Syria writ large. We might not be doing great here at the bottom of the social pile in blighty but I think we've a way to go before true desolation

the problem with this is its entirely right.

It is possible to think that and find good reasons to think it. But the problem with futurology is that virtually every attempt at it is wildly wrong. Plus, of course, as YW pointed out, the futurologists of whichever variety contribute towards the outcome themselves with their various attitudes.

But nihilistic apathy, of which I'm also guilty sometimes - I think most of us probably are - is, imo, a pretty dangerous force.

To drag this vaguely back to the OP, that nihilistic apathy couldn't be better illustrated than by a dentist choosing to spend what is more than a year's wages to most in his country, and more than a decade's wages to most in the country he was visiting, on killing a lion for a trophy. Here is a person who truly does not give one shit about the world.

I read that 99% of all the species that have ever existed on Earth are already extinct.
That happened for various reasons but our current handling of the planet and its biodiversity is not evidence of great custodianship especially when we have so much to learn and benefit from, from the range of life on the planet.

Yes and no. How much is it possible to reduce the biodiversity and maintain ourselves? I don't know, but that kind of future, with far fewer species but us still stumbling along, seems quite possible.

And we will always stumble along. As we have always done. That's the only bit of futurology I'm prepared to indulge in - at the point of crisis is where we exist. It's how all species exist, tbf - the planet is never less than full.

I saw a graphic recently of the planet's countries, there was a circle over India, Indonesia and China and the caption was, there are more people inside this circle than in the rest of the world. How can we combat this population pressure? Should we even? after all Britain already deforested, we already tamed our wildlife (made extinct) we already progressed from hunter to hunter gatherer to farming to city dwelling, who are we to demand Brazil / India / China / Indonesia not also go through these steps?

A Sonnet For Cecil
Cecil, the Lion, shot by a dentist
Sufficient to make one choke on one's wine
No mention of the hate-fueled racist
who murdered a baby in Palestine

Immolated before her second birthday
As she innocently slept in her cot
Before she could speak or run, jump and play
It's the West's shameful, collective blind spot

So the obvious headline selection
A baby girl fried alive in her bed?
No. We look in the other direction
A dead lion's the top story instead

Facebooked, Twittered, faux outrage we construct
Let's face it. Our moral compass is fucked

yep, it's been a weird one over the Gaza tot murdered....just seems to have flown right under the radar - but I guess Nethanyu was quick to condemn the murderers as terrorists etc, and so the story became about rogue extremists in a volatile region, conveniently obscuring the fact that the Israeli govt is notoriously reluctant to ever reign their attack dog settlers in as a whole , despite their continued attacks and provocations on Palestinians.

Whoops, sorry. Similar topic but new thread
Lots more catching up to do by the looks of things...maybe it should wait

2 U.S. airlines ban shipment of ‘Big Five’ hunting trophies
http://globalnews.ca/news/2145162/a...s-bans-shipment-of-big-five-hunting-trophies/
Delta Airlines led the way Monday in announcing it would no longer allow trophies to be shipped in its cargo.

“Effective immediately, Delta will officially ban shipment of all lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo trophies worldwide as freight,” Delta said in a statement Monday.

By late Monday evening, American Airlines announced on Twitter that it was following suit — despite not offering flights to or from destinations in Africa.
...

This move comes in response to pressure from campaigners since the killing of Cecil the lion. Delta flies from a number of African destinations, but American Airlines does not.

It is not yet clear, to me, how many other airlines fly to the US from African destinations.

My response to that is good, but all that I expect to happen is that there will be a massive increase in either private jets or topclass smugglers !

Killing of Cecil the lion sparks £0.5m in donations to Oxford wildlife researchers
http://www.theguardian.com/environm...m-in-donations-to-oxford-wildlife-researchers
Cecil, shot last month by an American dentist, was being studied by Oxford University’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) who set up the appeal to fund future big cat research work.

WildCRU announced on Tuesday that more than £550,000 had been received, meaning the unit’s research may be extended beyond Zimbabwe.
...
He added: “We feel inspired by this support and will work tirelessly to deliver the science and understanding that will enable wildlife and people to co-exist for the wellbeing of both.”

...
American Airlines said on Tuesday it would join Delta Airlines and United Airlines in banning the transport of animals known in Africa as the "big five", coined by hunters because they are the hardest to kill on foot.

There has been an international outcry against trophy hunting among animal lovers since it emerged that American dentist Walter Palmer killed Cecil, a rare black-maned lion that was a familiar sight at Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park.

Delta Air Lines Inc, the only American airline to fly directly between the United States and Johannesburg, will also review policies on accepting other hunting trophies with government agencies and other organizations that support legal shipments, it said.

I can't believe that just as many people, if not more, will pay to go on safaris to look at and photograph wild animals rather than kill them. Perhaps the problem is Zimbabwe...
A single hunter/killer must be worth a lot more to the local economy than a single photographer. But photography costs less in animals as only the hunter/killer kills the animal. The animal can be photographed hundreds or thousands of times during its life (obv!).

I am sure hunting/killing is a big industry in Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries.

It's daft making a hierarchy of things to give a fuck about when the volume of shit is so overwhelming. Israel/Palestine has been discussed extensively on here over the years. After a while you run out of things to say.

Relativist claptrap, some things are actually more important than others. Whilst people in Palestine, Zimbabwe or anywhere else are being killed and oppressed there is always something to say.

Because saying something on here actually changes anything?
