Cameron launches "Big Society"

Why are they ready with their guns and flags right now?

Most community work I see is done by Christians and other religious people. Baptists actually, they seem to do loads. If you think community work is running a squat or throwing a free party then maybe your right.

Did I mention that you're an idiot?

My old-style socialist, Tory-hating, atheist mum has done more volunteering than you've had hot dinners.

Are all these religious people also Tory?

IME, most the people I know or have met that are involved in community work, volunteering, co-operatives are of left and left of centre political persuasion.

Round here the Kingdom Faith lot (liberal baptists) do a lot of good work- but the catch is as always that they want to pray with you as they trim the hedge and sweep the gutter.

you really, really do need to get out more, or mix in wider circles. As an absolute fact they are a tiny proportion of the very wide variety of people engaged in some sort of volunteer/community work in the UK.
e2a: and VP is right; most 'lefties' (whatever that means) go big on volunteer work, of all shapes and sizes. It kinda goes with the territory, psychologically speaking.

No, I think that "community work" is work you do in the community that benefits the whole community, not just a handful of dogs on strings and their owners.

I'm pretty sure Edie does do stuff - that doesn't mean that handing over all the state's responsibilities to people working for free is going to be a good idea.

One of the things that convinced me that Labour were abandoning even a pretence of socialism was when a party wonk during Smith's leadership lectured me that "altruism is out". If society doesn't have altruism then it'll pretty soon cease to be a society in any meaningful way. After they abandoned clause four a few years later I knew they'd decided to govern for business rather than the people.

I'm sure she does.
My point was that she rails against "lefties" without realising that they form a significant minority of those who currently do community/voluntary work.

Quite.

You think they do, but you're wrong if you reckon volunteering and compassion is the reserve of the left. What I do means fuck all, I could just as easy point to a communist that don't work OR volunteer and that would mean fuck all too.

spot on (as per). i've always seen altruism at the heart of all progressive politics - certainly mine, and practically every lefty I know.

If you read what he said, he said they were a 'significant minority' not "the reserve of the left". All that is being pointed out is that not everyone who volunteers is a rightwing Christian.

No-one - you unutterable cretin - even remotely claimed they were 'the Preserve of the left" (at least get the words right, it ain't rocket science). The whole point was that you wittered on, IIRC, in an attempt to claim it was Xtian activist types and rightwingers who dominate the ranks of volunteers. VP, and I, were, simply pointing out this was utter bollocks - and why.
jesus, can you walk and breathe at the same time?

i don't think edie's the sharpest pencil in the case

The Jesus Army, who work extensively with the homeless are l/w commune in structure- those living in community anyway. In practise they are a dodgy theocratic cult but on structure they are commune style. Weird fuckers mind.

My parents both did a lot for their local community. They were always involved in all sorts of things. I however hardly do anything. I am in a local camera club but I am only a member. My sister does get involved in her community, she is always up to something or other.

I think it is easier to get involved if you live in a village or very small town as you are more likely to know others who are already involved. I should think that is not so true in a bigger town or city.
