Butterflies and moths

I sent the photo to our Butterfly Conservation county recorder and he agrees with you! He says it's a worn female silver-washed Fritillary.

He did say it's very difficult to tell them apart from the markings on the upper-side of the wings and that the under-sides give a better indication.

I'll know to try to take photos of the under-sides too next time!
Oooh, I've been hoping to see a Fritillary...WelJel :)

When I first caught sight of it I thought it might have been a Painted Lady but when it settled I realised it wasn't.

It was quite big too! That leaf it settled on is 60mm across so it's wing span was considerably bigger than that.

Do you think you can ask the butterfly to pose? ;) In my experience they pose briefly until you go to take a pic then bugger off :D
Either that, or lift their wings to their vertical resting position ...
Moths are even worse, there's been a big "brown" one visiting, but hasn't stayed still enough for me to see if there is a pattern on the wings ...

How odd. Can no longer click on the icons to include link or camera pic.

Anyway, it was a nice looking insect.

Where did you spot that, if you don't mind me asking?

I don't mind at all! On a side street off Well Street, at the Mare Street end (Hackney).

The lantana (plant) was growing in someone's front garden and poking out into the street.

The butterfly stayed very still for several minutes, hence I was able to photograph it quite easily.

I was slightly concerned for its wellbeing but then it did fly away seemingly quite well in the end.

Was wondering if it was somewhere in Hackney!

I don't spot painted ladies that often round this way, although I wonder if sometimes I fail to identify them as such.

Sounds like your one was full after a good drink and was having a rest before flying off in search of the next flower.

Moth with a poorly wing. I scooped it up and put it in some flowers/weeds. It crawled around my hand a bit.

No idea what it is, very pretty.

It's a tiger moth. I think a garden tiger moth (Arctia Caja).

Thanks, I found it on a beach, next to sand dunes.

I meant to update the story on this.

So the next day, I think it was, my kids saw the same moth back on the sand again, and put it back into some foliage. Later that day it was sitting on a blade of sea grass, and it was laying eggs along it

Here it is again, resting after it's labours

Wonder if it survived longer, or pegged it after procreating?
