Burger Thread. Yes!

I still prefer plastic cheese or cheddar on a burger.
I am not a big fan of swiss cheese over all. Not enough flavour and what there is is too nutty.

hmm. well, when done right, it's really delicious. but also good with other cheeses as you mentioned

Oooh I have just had a thought.
I have not done it but Harlech on a burger would be amazing!
It's melty and got horseradish in it and we all know how well that goes well with beef.
Might be a bit difficult to get your hands on in the US though seeing as it is not easy in London.

Heh I wouldn't try that! I was just surprised, I've not really seen Amy of those kind if man v food type challenges round here before. I kissed out on one of their normal burgers last weekend at an outdoor event as I got there too late!

ooh, that sounds good. I have seen horseradish cheddar here, will have to try it on a burger

So I went to Five guys on Saturday, and a Bacon cheeseburger, coke, and cajun fries cost me £15.25

Had to queue to get in the place which I wasn’t too pleased about, but it was only for a few minutes and was their opening weekend.

Burger was good, you get two nicely sized patties, usual American plastic cheese and I could hardly taste the bacon but it did add a nice crunch to the burger as the bacon was really crispy. However I was a little disappointed it was cooked medium to well done, as I prefer a bit of red if it is good meat.

Cajun fries where great, I only ordered a regular portion and got so many I couldn’t eat them all.

The coke freestyle machine (which apparently has 100+ flavours) was also a bit also a bit annoying as people take ages to choose what drink they want! I also found everything tasted a bit watery.

It was a decent burger but nothing amazing. If you want a better (and cheaper) burger to go meatmarket, or patty & bun.

Went here for Sunday lunch

And to my delight they had home made, organic beef burger on the menu - so that's what I had - with the option of how I wanted it cooked - sounded promising

And, it was OK, the trouble was, for my taste, it had been a bit messed about with. Somehow, Rosemary, Thyme and a splash of All Spice had gotten into the mix - and, for my taste, this did not add to the experience - so, I'm still at a bit of a loose end when it comes to burgers - maybe next weekend, Mrs Voltz has decided that we're stopping in for Sunday lunch and are cooking at home

im sorry your burger wasn't good :( - its a real drag when you go somewhere like that and its sub standard, that said, I think good burgers usually come better from a van

The burgers I got from the market stand where the type you get from burger stands/late night kebab houses. They were quite good and cheap, but was a bit surreal to eat on sober and cooked in my own kitchen.

Colleagues went to Five Guys today, apparently it took 45 minutes to get their food :facepalm: I'm thinking I might pop in there a soggy Tuesday in October.

It's not that the burger wasn't "good" - it's more that it wasn't to my taste

I'll give you a for instance - this evening, driving home, I was told to pick up a Chinese take away for tea - I ALWAYS have a bottle (glass) of coke - ice cold straight from the fridge with this - I could taste the first bite of the coke as it hit - we were out of coke - my fault, I should have checked, I was absolutely convinced we had one, so ended up finishing up a nicely chilled glass of Rose - equally nice, but I'd got my heart set on a coke - the wine was never going to do it

Same with the burger, it was fine, there are, no doubt, many here who would think I'm being picky and a "Shut up HV, get it down yer neck son" but it was not the burger I was hankering for

As an aside - is there a Wendy's burger bar in the UK - only from my limited experience of the Americas, Wendy's burgers are a bit special.

i hear ya. I was a bit drunk last night when i read your post, sorry. I get what you are saying about burgers being 'to ones taste' for example, like most burger afficionadoes the main thing i look for in a burger is good quality, flavoursome meat, and i would be quite pissed off if it was somewhat 'chillified' or 'currified' as these are flavours that i dont think go with burger. Actually i love the sound of the burger you had - although hold on the allspice.

No wendys in the Uk, as far as i know

i made lamb burgers with my own top secret garlic, chilli, rosemary and coriander seasoning, put em on the bbq and ate em on tesco value burger buns with spinach and random grated cheese.

i got some amazing burgers from my nearest butcher this weekend. they had two kinds, normal and "american style". Big and fairly thin. I wonder what they mean by "american style"? could have asked i suppose. anyway £1.99 for 4, and they look all homemade and rustic and hold together properly on a barbecue.

Anyone been to Dirty Burger in Kentish Town? It's a bit hipster tbh (it's in a small metal shack) but the burgers are excellent and fairly reasonably priced. In the style of a McDonalds almost - mustard, ketchup, gherkins - but good.

I ate an awesome amount of food last night. When my mate said pop over for a bite to eat I didn't quite appreciate the spread that would be laid on.

Anyway the winner for me was the cheeseburgers...two patties with the cheese in the middle and cooked that way. I was worrying it would be a bit rich, but was lush.
