My goodness you people are so predictable. As soon as the McRib comment was posted I knew my name would come up and the whole shill accusation would re-emerge. I’ve actually watched in amusement reading your wild conspiracy theories and was more than happy to let the myth grow.
OK what shall we address first? I was sent a link to this forum by a very good friend of 30+ years saying “I’m sure you’ve seen this” (which I hadn’t) and it was great to find like-minded people sharing their stories and photos of burger related adventures so obviously I was keen to contribute and also share my website as I thought people would be interested.
Firstly someone kept banging on about the ® I use in my name (which we are in the process of registering I’ll add) and then someone else said something along the lines of “please don’t turn this forum into a blah promoting your own website” etc etc so I thought “do you know what I can’t be bothered anymore”.
I think I came back to post some links to the My Burger promotion on my website and yes they do contain McDonald’s videos because I feature in them quite a bit and I think anyone showing in official McDonald’s videos would want to show them off a bit. Oh I forget, that corporation is the most evil entity ever and people must not ever admit to eating or liking any of their products.
So a McDonald’s shill? Well I am 100% certain a multi-billion global corporation such as McDonald’s doesn’t require one individual to help promote their products. Look at their recent social media activity around the McRib. As of writing, Facebook McRib post has 5,261 shares and 22,758 likes. Twitter McRib tweet has 2.4k retweets and 2k favourites – far bigger numbers than I could ever expect or hope for from my own accounts.
Of course I must be a shill for McDonald’s because I feature so many reviews. The fact is that McDonald’s is very, very popular. And my website is primarily designed to review new high street promotional burgers alongside more in-depth, personal accounts of independent and gourmet places. And as a webmaster I am very keen on page views so it’s a bit of a no brainer to review the latest McDonald’s products as people are going to see their advertising and search for these products on the internet and be directed to my website. But why so many compared to Burger King?
I think BK in 2014 have released about 12 new burgers. Compare that with McDonald’s which I believe is in the region of about 22 maybe so it’s always going to be more. And McDonald’s attracts more attention and page views as well. Look on Twitter at the number of tweets for McPizza Pepperoni or any of the My Burger creations. Compare that to how many people are tweeting about the Meat Lovers Whopper or Quattro Cheese Whopper.
So I throw in some independent reviews to hide the guise of being a shill for McDonald’s. Let’s take a look at the last 3 months of reviews featured on my website. Now this isn’t written by a team. It’s me, my girlfriend and a person I have met once who does not work full time and enjoys a good burger and writing about it. We also have other contributors who are random people who show an interest in submitting a review and I encourage them to participate because it saves my wallet and waistline and I can’t get around the whole of the UK like I would like to.
Anyway back to those review stats for the last 3 months:
McDonald’s 8
Burger King 6
KFC 1
Other High Street 8
Independent or very small chain 20
I recently reviewed a new burger place opened in Worcester called burgerworks (Byron Hamburgers is opening in the City in 2016) and I couldn’t rave on about the place highly enough. I even thought about posting a link here but thought “better not”. Just read it and you’ll see the effort I go to writing about an independent (if it is good). In fact after reading that review another Worcester place invited us to go for a burger and I’ve just found some very interesting places in Hereford. And I enjoy these places but the reviews are never as popular in terms of views compared to the McDonald’s reviews. It’s just the way it is. Sorry.
I never engage with anyone on here. I posted pictures of my own creation, the PFT which had pulled pork on it etc and talked about what ingredients I used and how I cooked it etc. I even invited numerous people to write reviews for my website (which someone did!!) enabling them to have a better platform to share their burger story and pictures.
So I think that was about it. McDonald’s shill. I’m quite certain their sales figures do not have any variation if I don’t tweet about a particular burger and/or give one of their products a bad review. Get real.
I hope you don’t take this as me trying to defend myself because I really, really do not feel the need to but I thought I would drop you a line to dispel the myth once and for all.
And please. If anyone would like to continue this conversation away from the bright lights of this forum then please by all means contact me on Twitter @Burger_Lad and I’ll gladly discuss further.
Right I really must go as I am in a meeting in 10 minutes with Mark Hawthorne where we are going to see just how many subliminal messages we can get on the website trying to activate something in your brains to go and buy more of our, I mean McDonald’s burgers.
Thank you.
