Brixton food & drink news: new restaurants, bars, pop ups, cafes and more

This is a really sad sight:

I fear that if the Albert keeps looking like this on late weekend nights, the place won't be long for this world either.

If it's the place that has a dance floor at the rear, I remember having some very good nights there in the early 90s. I hope it stays a pub.

I've just done a quick tour of Brixton.

The Dogstar was worryingly empty, the Chip Shop was packed (but that only takes 50 people), Market House looked quiet, the Effra Social was nowhere near as busy as it usually is.

Hoots has got a decent crowd but it's not mega rammed, which suits me. There's a great Afrobeat band playing now

We went to the Ritzy last night. Walking back along Acre Lane around 11pm there were LOADS of 20/30-somethings walking the other way from Clapham to Brixton. I wonder where they were going? I thought maybe the Effra Social but perhaps the Blues Kitchen.

It definitely wasn't the Effra they were going to. Maybe there was a private party somewhere or there was something on at the Electric?

The decline of the Prince Albert as a community pub continues with the manager bringing in a new rule that bans all staff members from being in the pub unless they're working.

The place is fucked.
That's pretty standard for most bar/pub jobs though? Every bar job I ever had, you weren't allowed to drink on site at any time.

Now Cafe Max does not open on Sundays I've been to Lala Cafe on Brixton Station road.

Its not as cheap as Cafe Max. Does not sell alcohol ( plus point for my OH who isn't keen on Cafe Max once the drinkers arrive.)

Now its warmer I'm growing to like it. The food is more middle eastern If one wants that. Its friendly with polite service. And the food is good.

On the other hand a 1000 capacity bar is opening on the roof of Sports Direct which will probably be popular and more expensive to drink at. Is it because what I am reading is true that, the kids want 'experiences' when they go out, and a humble old pub like The Albert just doesn't provide that?

The Albert used to be exactly what quite a lot of people wanted, with live music, local DJs etc but its recent demise has everything to do with the new manager who has thoroughly pissed off punters and staff alike. And still the toilet is a fucking stinking shithole.

I was at the Lexington for a gig a couple of weeks ago. Gig upstairs, huge late bar downstairs with DJ but very much a pub vibe. Lights on. Very busy but not rammed. Don't feel that we have anything like that in Brixton.
