Brixton food & drink news: new restaurants, bars, pop ups, cafes and more

Haven't they been down this route before? Can't help but think if this is the end of Antic, their pubs will be replaced by pricier ones.

Friends wanted to meet to watch the football and of course every place was rammed or booked out, but somehow we just wandered into the Albert about 30m before the game and even got seats.

It wasn't even that full, which was great.

This Supercute/Harlem Brewery tie-up mentioned on BBuzz is intruiging
Presumably solves the issue of what to do with the Friendship Adventure bar in Market Row rather elegantly.
Isn't there still a SuperCute bar in Brixton Villaage? Will that stay as SuperCute?

BTW I walk past the Friendship Adventure/Supercute Loughborough Junction brewhouse most days around 8 pm.
The change of management seemed to dent the numbers a bit, though coming back up.
The current clientele looks a bit younger and a bit more mixed (men/women)

Don't know about that but Anthony Thomas is a bit of a business phoenix 🐦🔥. Goes bust and starts again! (Assuming Antic is still his).
Did he not start the "Viaduct" in Coldharbour Lane, which development had to be rescued out of bankruptcy by Lexadon?
Don't forget the Eagle Printing Works on Brixton Roads where Antic's builders chucked away the distinctive weather vane.

Apart from which all Antic bars used to be independent LLPs so they could go bust independently.
Sounds as though this changed at some point if "a portfolio" of 13 bars went into administration together.

That kind of sums up just how far the Albert has fallen if they can't even pack out a pub for an England final.

By the sound of it, they were probably the quietest pub in Brixton on what should be a much-needed absolute bumper night for boozers.

Disaster at the Effra Social after a power cut turned the place dark.

There was a launch party in Market Row tonight, I walked past it and it looked a bit too glam

Looks like this place really fucked up:

A South London restaurant that employed staff without the right to work in the UK has slammed a council's 'unfair' decision to take away its alcohol licence. Jhon Mendoza, manager of Restaurante Santafereno in Brixton, said he was worried the Colombian eatery would lose up to half of its business as a result of a ban on the sale of booze imposed upon it by Lambeth Council last week.

The council said it had no choice but to remove the 20-year-old restaurant's alcohol licence after Home Office raids in 2023 and 2024 found eight workers employed illegally there. But Mr Mendoza, 39, said the Labour-run local authority should have given the restaurant in Brixton Village another chance before imposing tough restrictions.

A good friend from New York visited Brixton on Saturday night and was keen to visit the places he'd seen in photos I shared over the years.

His loved the place, but his biggest disappointment?

The Albert, He'd only ever seen pics from my nights and this is how it looked at 11pm:

Look at the shit pay on offer at the Prince Albert for a 'team leader'
View attachment 439363

Sadly, that's about average for bar work "team leader/shift leader" type role in London.

(And yes that is disgusting, it really is very poorly paid - and often doesn't offer a full working week either, so it's often a 2nd job)

For the staff to take on the extra responsibility of being a team leader, they're rewarded with just 50p extra per hour. Unsurprisingly, none are queuing up for the 'promotion.'

And yes, it's not much worse than most other bars around Brixton, but few have such a bad working atmosphere as the Albert.

Does explain a lot of they're only offering £12. I'd assumed with low unemployment and worker shortages bar supervisor jobs would have gone a little higher, more like £14-15
