British and International road signs

An unusual one to look out for on your travels is a sign where an unclassified (U) road is labelled on a sign with a number, in the same way that 'A' and 'B' roads are. I saw one up near Bakewell a few years ago, but they're scarce. Somewhere on the internet is a nice article detailing many of them, but google isn't being very helpful.

Apart from "tradition" anyone tell me why this ...

O&S - ungated sign
par StoneRoad2013, on Ipernity

represents the standard UK road sign for an ungated level crossing, but apart from on the heritage / preserved lines, the UK hasn't had steam engines since 1968 !
(Oh, and it is on a Welsh Heritage Railway, and one that doesn't have any 4-6-0s on it. either !)

I reckon it's simply a case of road signs not moving with the times. At the end of the day, I'm pretty sure the speed cameras used on British roads are a tad more modern than a circa 1910 model...

ETA: In Spain there is a similar antique camera road sign. Only in there it means 'picturesque spot'. I can imagine Spanish tourists being quite confused whenever they see this sign in Britain.
