Britain should rejoin the EU...

the 'vote yes / no' referendum was probably the first election i can remember anything at all about but i'm not sure i understood at the time what question the yes or no was all about...

But it wasn't it was howling in the wind for 20 odd years then a build from Maastrict onwards. And servaral rounds of further integration. By the time of the 2016 only 13% of the population were of an age to have had anything to do with the initial plebiscite. That plebiscite wasn't (by that stage) honest bedrock of anything let alone the leave movement. By the time of the referendum it was quite gualing what was being justified by it.
What's even more nuts is the tories didn't even have the referendum for decent reasons.

I do expect another referendum in my lifetime. the lack of honest engagement was part of the problem IMO . Confident we won't rejoin but think there will be a referendum none the less
I'd say that getting organised to resist any possible membership of the, then, common market some 12 years ahead of actual accession was more than "howling in the wind". Polling series regarding UK membership also shows that, for considerable periods of the UK's membership, the sceptics were 'pushing at an open door' of anti-European sentiment:

It wasn't really until late Thatcher that Ipsos/MORI found cross-over into net Remain sentiment, and that started to erode just 5 years later after 'Black Wednesday'. From then onwards groups like Sked and Goldsmith's various iterations campaigned with greater media attention until, (not shown on this graph), the various Leave campaigns pushed anti-European sentiments to that crucial 51% of those engaging with the 2016 plebiscite.

Can't see why you're casting doubt on the integrity of the 1975 plebiscite but appear content to accept the veracity of the 2016 one?
