Boycott twinings tea

You're behaving like a chav, aren't you? Spitting nasties at complete strangers, but that's hardly the point, why are you requesting my arsehole? I don't even know you! Send a pic first, ffs! And besides, with the grand sum of 38 posts you aren't really supposed to talk to the likes of me, you start on the lesser posters and then work your way up to my level. You can't just stroll in and expect convos with the likes of me, you haven't been vetted or anything.

:D

I wondered where this thread had gone. Now I know it's in politics I'll be off. Too many angry people with small willies.

I never buy Twinings, I buy Fairtrade tea, which helps people in countries much poorer than here or Poland.

Don't you remember trolley protests? They used to involve cape apples and outspan oranges, and were a common sight in urban supermarkets. Presumably dates are the focus these days.
I don't remember these protests (although I'm probably old enough to). What happened?

:D Welcome back Wookey!

Yeah right. 90% of the premium doesn't go to the workers

So for example pay £2 for normal tea, and £2.50 for fairtrade tea.

From the normal tea, say 30p goes to the tea workers, 85p is production and distribution costs, and 85p is profits for the landowners, supermarkets etc.

The Fairtrade tea is 50p more, but only 5p of that premium goes to the workers

So for Fairtrade tea, 35p goes to the workers, 85p is production and distribution costs, and £1.30 is profits for the landowners, supermarkets etc.

Congratualtions on helping to redistribute wealth to the rich, which really helps low income workers in poor countries get on in the world.

Have you got any proof of this? Where did you get those figures from?

And fairtrade tea is often the same price as other tea.

Which fucking tea should we buy then?

It'll be a challenge for me as Twining's Earl Grey is the only drinkable tea available when I'm out on my Sunday bike rides.

I doubt my usual tipple is remotely Fairtrade - Taiwanese Oolong and Chinese Keemun ...

Does your "Fairtrade" supplier publish their worker's wages? Do you know what the workers are paid? Or maybe you just want to think they paid more because you paid more for a label?

http://www.wilstea.com/acatalog/Wage-Progression-and-Benefits-for-Estate-Workers.pdf

I'm sure they get more than they would for non-fair trade company.

It's not just about wages, fair trade estates provide healthcare, clean water, education and roads amongst other things. Your teas don't do that.

Read the link you quoted, they do get these things.

ill prob carry on buying it tbf (altho not now as im skint), most companies would behave like this if they had the chance

http://www.adamsmith.org/images/pdf/unfair_trade.pdf for the principle but I totally made up the prices

Well I buy from this guy. But I'm sure there's lots of places to get decent tea from well-paid workers now that the wonders of the internets mean you don't have to buy Tetley from Tesco

You must have more money than me.

£27 a kilo isn't expensive for good tea.

I pay £32 a kilo for Oolong and £22 for Keemun.
£200 a year - nearly all drunk at work - so £1 per day for a mug and a half of really good tea.

A cup of disgusting coffee is twice that.

I hope you don't mean you're still boycotting South Africa!
:D No, that was my point.

Boycotting South Africa is so deeply embedded in my psyche that even now, almost 20 years after 'regime change' I still have to double think, "Oh no, that's ok now" and not put the produce back on the shelf.

It's pathetic really.

I drink about 6 cups of tea a day. I only drink Earl Grey. I don't have £45 to spend on 400 tea bags.

Well I suppose at least the Oil of Bergamot masks the taste of cheap tea ;)

I hope you aren't using a whole teabag per cup ...
