Boomtown 2013 8th-11th August

id never heard of it before and spent saturday eve dancing to it, listening back to it, im not so sure it wasnt the rugs, however it was nice to discover something new :)

Ive read on another forum there could be trouble a brewing about exceeding noise limits, not confirmed though.

was it the drummers on sunday night?

the local hampshire rags have reported noise issues, not sure how bad a breach would be though? is noise monitored throughout festivals or does it just depends on someone complaining? if there is a breach does that automatically mean licence revoked for future events? beesonthewhatnow do you know??

It's measured by both the festival and EH (at least most festivals do - Boomtown might be slack like it is with most things) as people walk round with db meters both on site and 5k away (for example - or wherever the wind is blowing). If someone reports noise issues at Glasto they send someone with a monitor to that location to verify how loud it is and if they say turn it down you say how much.

BT were clearly aware of noise issues as they turned off the upper stages early.

And no it's not a license breaker afaik, because there is more you can promise to do to mitigate it next year.

There is also a big difference between 'noise' and 'sound' ... I can hear the Lambeth Country show from my childhood home but it doesn't bother me, and I can hear concerts/singing/cheering from the footy stadium down the road here and that's fine. But as I clearly demonstrated at BT unwanted 'noise' like, for example, the man waffling on about the Wall of Death makes me really grumpy :D

They get complaints every year, 70 last year. Rumours that this was the last year of Boomtown in it's current guise.

Saw the wall of death for the first time last weekend, i now forgive them all previous transgressions- they are fucking amaxing

One of those things everyone should see (and smell!) once! completely blows you away.

But having seen it once (three times actually) I never want to hear the commentary again

All festivals will have noise limits as part of their license conditions. There are usually limits for individual stages (usually measured at the FOH mixing position), key points around the site and others up to several miles away. You tend not to take peak readings, it's usually averages over 15 min periods. For small festivals this can be as simple as one bloke running round with a meter, but at large events you can have very complicated wireless setups with remote meters all over the place. IIRC the noise team at Glastonbury is over 20 people.

If these get breached there can be fines for the people involved and yes, it can have a bearing on future licenses.
