Rorymac, it's so good to have you back. You never cease to amaze me, whether it be stories about wasps or possible unstable brickwork under railway arches in Ponders End.
Your posts on this thread #104 + #117 are fucking great. :) I'm gonna have to go back and 'like' you.

Re Dave Simpson .. It was in Leeds at an after gig party thing which the bands Manic Street Preachers, blaggers and Credit to The Nation .. NME etc assorted journos were at etc etc. I wasn't there cos I'd given up smoking at the time so I was asleep in my bunk on the tour bus outside wherever it was.
I woke up to a huge commotion when everyone came back 'Matty had battered Dave Simpson' .. never heard of him.
Cos I couldn't sleep with the noise I just listened to all the convos .. 'he deserved it .. he was being a complete cunt' .. 'he was provoking you' .. etc etc

I knew it was a bad thing that had happened but I just wanted to go to fucking sleep which I did.

Next day I kept just listening and then me and Matty had a minute together at some stage and I asked him to tell me what happened .. ''He said 'All I did was asked him if he enjoyed the gig' and then he said 'well in my book a leopard never changes its spots'.

Because Matty had said in an interview that he was drawn in by the NF in his youth Dave Simpson concluded that he was always going to be a working class thicko and was typically dismissive of folks with such attitudes. I went mad at him myself and told him he was a fucking idiot for reacting cos as the day wore on it was obvious this was bad news. He told me he was frustrated at being dismissed like that and so did others. I knew what he was saying but I still went mental and we fell out for the rest of the tour more or less.

I wish I had have been there not cos I'm sure I could have stopped what happened but cos I think I might but only possibly .. drink had been taken and Matty was very sensitive to being classed as a fool and quite rightly so. As it turned out there was a court case and Matty was found not guilty owing to provocation.

All I know is that Dave Simpson was entirely wrong .. he might well say he thinks the band is shit and fair enough but sneering at Matty with an air of superiority over what he perceived as a working class div .. I fucking hated that tour if I'm honest but enjoyed it in my own little world all the same.

Matty knew I was right and I knew he was too but broken eye sockets etc were the order of that evening.
Incidentally the Blaggers were (apart from but including Matty and only because he could fight) the least aggressive bunch of individuals you could meet .. next weeks NME .. the Manices were saying how they felt threatened when they saw a bunch of street fighters backstage .. incorrect .. but Matty took all that on board and Dave Simpson pushed all the wrong buttons for no reason.

Like I say though I wasn't there myself but I fell out with my best mate over it and spoke with everyone about it time and time again for months .. so I think I have the correct picture. If Matty was around now I'd still be mad at him but I do still understand.

Heh .. ps .. my favourite Manic was Ritchie .. oh and the tour manager was a guy called Rory .. used to be in a mad biggish punk band I can't remember the name of but a proper tosser.

Fackin musos !!

the NME etc have always been smug bastards in fact i'm almost reminded of this certain forum i post on!

I saw them supporting PWEI. I remember they all spat a lot.
Just watched the Abandon Ship video Blagsta posted and felt embarrassed.

They all didn't spit a lot .. Christy (the rapper) did
He was a very nervous performer .. Matty might have taken a drink from a can or something and spat it out possibly but no one else on stage used to spit tbf

ie 1/2 out of 7 is not them all !

ps .. thanks spliff and sweet FA .. good to see you again too

pps .. the sax player (vocalist) you mention is Olaf trevagl .. a lovely bloke btw
I still sometimes bump into Matt Vinyl at King's Cross .. he works on the tube there .. a nicer non agressive fella you couldn't wish to meet !

I've not posted here much before but having just stumbled across this thread thought it'd be rude not too. Had to go with blaggers being not crap although admittedly that first album On Yer Toez was, in my opinion, well, crap, and a bit 3rd rate oi! (never been a big oi fan myself). however Blaggers Ita were a band who developed with time, taking on board a wide variety of influences. I think Bad Karma was a very good album that still stands the test of time - very well produced and, with credit to Matty, moments of lyrical excellence. but I suppose it's all a matter of opinion and personal preference at the end of the day. As with most bands, some stuffs going to be good some stuff shit. As a live band the same goes - some shit gigs and some gigs truly memorable and fucking exhilarating.

Rory - excellent posts on this thread, and I would like to say that it was an honour to share a stage with you. much respect due. how ya doing? :)
With regards to Tommy Baldwins (R.I.P.) involvement in the band. Ray was a part of the pre Blaggers line up (under the dubious name of Peasant Army) and played a part in getting the band off the ground. Ray penned the lyrics to House of the Fascist Scum.

Remembering those we lost on the way.

Was the name 'Peasant Army' taken from the Redskins track of same name d ya know?An back to OP,saw em loads o times(was pretty active with AFA in 90s) an with any band sometimes they werent their best, but ,on the whole a great live band an a breath of fresh air/kick up the arse for the 'punk' scene

especially the Oi scene which was proper dodgy in late 80s

In all fairness has there ever been a time when the "oi scene" wasn't proper dodgy?

the original bands just sung about shit jobs dodgy bosses , dodgy politicians etc , then the nazis moved in , and by 1988 it was a totally different ballgame where more often than not if you saw a skinhead you would be wary.

Aye but was/is'nt the problem that very few of these bands effectively challenged the nazis when they appeared, refused to recognise there was a problem and just let it fester away until it became a huge problem and then stood back and said it's got fuck all to do with us.The business were fairly typical of this attitude I reckon and wasn't one of their gigs in kings cross attacked by fash, and rather than work with people and stand up to it they folded the rest of their tour?I don't know much about the oi thing at the minute but it appears to be a bit of a quagmire of right wing politics and fence sitters, think there was a thread here about it recently, real oi or whatever the fuck they call themselves these days.

yes i guess down that way the scene was that dodgy it woulda been risky speaking out and they coulda only done it like the Blaggers did, with their own security etc . The Business were never dodgy but like all London bands had the odd dodgy hanger on . As for todays bands yes i'm afraid most of the UK bands just sound like some old Daily mail reading grandad which is completely at odds with say, Germany where most of the bands are openly anti fascist

The Blaggers did not have their own security, it was just mates who went along to see them, at least in the early days, don't know how it went after I stopped going.

whether it was called security or not is besides the point , it deterred the loons

There were mostly just a few or sometimes even less who would have defended them physically, not trying to nitpick just pointing out that they had the balls to stand up for themselves and did not need a mob behind them.
