Billy Caldwell requires Cannabis oil for his condition.

But if - and this is probably a forlorn hope - even a fraction of the resources currently put into prohibition were put into treatment, preventative care (particularly mental health), and support, the problems that do arise from drug misuse could largely be addressed. After all, it's not as if nobody's experiencing problems with drug misuse under the current prohibitionist regime, is it? :)

It's not only money saved on enforcing what is basically unenforceable laws, but the tax that could be raised by legislation of cannabis, and certain other drugs, by taking them out of the black market.

Blimey, it looks like we could indeed see a change here!

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said he hopes that a review of the law on the medicinal use of cannabis oil can be completed within months.

Mr Hunt accepted that the UK has not got the law right on the oil, which is illegal in Britain but available elsewhere.

And the Health Secretary told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I don’t think anyone who followed that story could sensibly say that we are getting the law on this kind of thing right.

Review of law on medical use of cannabis oil must be swift, says Jeremy Hunt

Trust that cunt?

No, but the pressure is mounting, one report I read said a group of MPs has been formed to push for change, and it includes at least 80 so far, add to that medical professionals & media all pushing for it, I honestly think there's a good chance of change at last.

I mean, FFS, it's the only logical thing to do, it's time we caught up with the ever growing number of countries that have legalised medical cannabis.

Absolute fucking idiocy on the part of the government. Had the child's doc prescribed diacetyl morphine, morphine, pethidine, methadone, oxycodone or pentazocine, no problem. All of the preceding are addictive life destroying medicaments, yet can be prescribed without problem, even for a child. Cannabis, which is neither of those things cannot be prescribed.

It isn't just a Tory problem with the reaction of Col Gussett (Retd), Labour have a similar attitude.

Little Billy has now been discharged from hospital.

Meanwhile...
The government is creating an expert panel to look into individual cases.

Home Office minister Nick Hurd told the House of Commons that the panel of clinicians, led by England's chief medical officer Dame Sally Davies, will advise ministers on any applications to prescribe the drug.

He said Billy's case had "shone a light" on the matter and "highlighted the need for the government to explore the issue and our handling of these issues further".

Boy discharged after getting cannabis oil

One small step for mankind, one giant leap for government.

Ex-Tory leader now saying the previously unsayable

Cannabis war 'comprehensively lost', says William Hague
Former Conservative leader Lord Hague has called for a "decisive change" in the law on cannabis - suggesting that the Tories should consider legalising recreational use of the drug. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, he said "any war" has been "irreversibly lost". Lord Hague goes further than senior Tories who have suggested a law change after a boy with epilepsy was given a special licence to use cannabis oil.

andysays, you beat me to it, I've just posted that on the 'When will cannabis be legal in the UK?' thread.

This case has certainly put the spotlight on the issue, so well done to Charlotte Caldwell.

Hague piping-up on the same day as news breaks with the vote in Canada's House of Commons to go ahead to legalise recreational cannabis, has made it as a major news item on the telly news this morning.

Having witness what's happened with Billy, I see Hannah Deacon, mother of Alfie, is all over the media now, good luck to her.

The mum of an epileptic six-year-old boy has blasted Theresa May for promising to give him cannabis oil - but still not following through three months later.

Hannah Deacon revealed the Prime Minister gave her the personal assurance for her boy Alfie Dingley during a face-to-face meeting in Downing Street.

Yet Hannah has faced "hurdles after hurdles after hurdles", and still has no permit for him to be treated with cannabis oil legally in the UK.

'Theresa May promised my son cannabis oil - he's still waiting 3 months later'

she has tried to do the right thing and has got nowhere. Time to her & families in her position to bring the meds back & make a big play of declaring them at the border - may has no human compassion or sense of shame, she needs to have her hand forced on this

Decrim or legalisation won't happen under a Tory administration. Absolute cowards, so no chance of standing up to their propagandists in the press.

From that link:

“This is completely at odds with the view of the Chelsea and Westminster hospital, which said he could go home, and the Home Office, which recommended he did.”

After a public outcry over the confiscation of the medicine at Heathrow airport, the home secretary, Sajid Javid, granted a licence for cannabis oil to be administered to the boy at home.

FFS, what on earth is the Department of Health in Northern Ireland doing? I hope Javid can override their decision, but I guess that could be a problem with health being a devolved power.

On Friday, the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust released a statement saying it is "working very hard with the Department of Health to put in place the necessary arrangements" for Billy to receive his medication at home in Castlederg from early next week, rather than at hospital in Belfast.

Boy may get medicinal cannabis at home

Well, it seems they are trying to overcome whatever crazy rules & regulations that have been imposed.

Why is it never pointed out that the reasons for cannabis being illegal are a relic from British imperialism and are nothing but a racial form of social control. It’s obvious no? Attack the racist law.
