Best time to hit the 'Reduced To Clear' section?

The real Tramps buffet would be rather limited according to my 1970s kids parties book. Raw Tomatoes and jam tarts.

Lady and the Tramp? That tramp was fuckin boss.

Not always an insult, can't enforce a ban n every potentially pejorative term simply because some people are offended. People would just come up with new words that might offend. Like banning drugs or closing tax loopholes. Always a new one round the corner.

But this is Urban SEVENTY FIVE man!

We have to censor words!

had a quick browse and thats pricey as fuck. 79p for a cucumber! they're taking the piss

I think like anywhere else you need to shop selectively - basically cheap, dried food. I didn't realise they actually did fresh food - it kind of defeats the purpose of the site really. I wouldn't have chosen to get a cucumber from there anyways. Personally I probably won't use it but some friends we just went camping with bought loads of stuff super super cheap.

'Hey look, a tramp.'
'You shouldn't call him a tramp.'
'Why not?'
'It's offensive to his human dignity. It implies individual responsibility for social failings, and reinforces the idea of otherness that helps perpetuate political inaction on issues of homelessness, mental illness and substance abuse.'
'Really? Shit, I feel bad now. Maybe I'll go and give him some money.'
'No, you shouldn't give them money. They'll only spend it on special brew and crack.'

It's not though, is it. It has no more relationship to the 'real cost' of food than the original price, possibly less of a relationship. It's the 'better to sell for something than sell for nothing' section.

That is very true - the retailers are just cutting their losses and hoping to get something, even a few pence, for the overstocked goods they'd otherwise chuck in the skip.

The way I see it the supermarkets are on a massive mark up compared to what they buy for so for me it is a more 'realistc/real' price. :)

I haven't denied they want to get something rather than nothing.

Simply not true.

Tesco made a £2bn loss this year on £62bn sales; last year it was a £4bn profit on £63bn sales. The margin on each item sold is fairly low, once the various overheads of running a giant grocer are taken into account. So when the tramps' buffet discounts more than 50%, it simply can't be described as the "real" price by any stretch of the imagination.

It will always be the REAL PRICE SECTION to me! :D

I want to know what they pay for food before I change my mind. :hmm:

They can afford to pay their executive massive wages, they buy up prime business properties, if they are making a loss it's because they are greedy and their business model is flawed...My point is about what they actually pay suppliers for food.

Actually, I've always assumed that a lot of food is artificially cheap. An interesting question.

Some things are artificially cheap, some are artificially expensive. It's all a massive accounting/marketing excercise in which the cost of production is only one of many factors affecting the retail price.

When you see 'buy one get one free' or similar promotions on fresh produce, the supermarket may well have simply paid half as much as usual for the stuff at the farm gate. They dominate the market to the point where farmers can be obliged to accept whatever shitty price Tesco or whoever offers.

Which may we less, or more, than what they sell it for in the TB. Not real. Prices aren't real.

You should start a blog about these foolish retailers who waste money on, erm, setting up shops. Then you could start a thread about it on Urban under the name of RutitaTesco, and build support for your cause.
