Best luxury hot chocolate

I'm in full agreement with platinumsage here. Hot chocolate powder is just cocoa, sugar and powdered milk.

Do it proper. 3 big spoons of high quality cocoa, plenty of brown sugar. Make a paste with milk. Thin it out with more milk and heat it in microwave. Top up with double cream. Drink a whole sports direct mug full and make yourself sick.

ETA sometimes I put orange zest in, or even a vitamin c tablet if I'm feeling really dirty.

i always have mine in a Sports Direct mug cos normal ones never sate my appetite. Never been sick though.

But real hot chocolate, French style is made melting real chocolate in milk, no powder

And Knoops hot chocolate is real chocolate flakes, not powder and is lovely, but so pricey …..

Not that I’m an expert or anything…. 🤣

I quite like the hotel chocolat wadge of chocolate on a stick that you stir into hot milk/cream.

The best hot chocolate is the Italian style stuff made from so much melted chocolate that you can stand a spoon up in it.
Carluccios used to have that on the menu. A small pot of stand-your-spoon-up-in-it hot chocolate accompanied by a small pot of nearly-stand-your-spoon-in-it double cream plus a shot of espresso. Called a bicerin.

My sister recently bought some white hot chocolate online.
She thought the tub was small....
It was massive. 5kg.
Its delicious!!!!!
I'll check the name out.

I'm a child of the 60s - so as always it's generic defatted cocoa made very thick with just hot water.
If I'm going off-piste I may add chia seeds and/or peanut butter.

One of the joys of tea, coffee and cocoa is the low calories.

I don't know if it's luxury as in gourmet chocolate brands, but my mother bought a Turkish Delight rose hot chocolate from Whittard, which is absolutely stunning. I'm going to buy some for myself.
They do a gingerbread one too which is lovely. Loads of squirty cream and chocolate powder helps it along.

I used to use hot chocolate mixes but not when sticking to a keto diet cos they’re stacked with sugar. So I developed my own version, and now that I’m not doing keto (cos it’s winter) I’m still happy with it.

Huge heaped pudding spoon of black cocoa powder, two teaspoons of vanilla extract, half or full teaspoon of coconut fat. Hot water, keep stirring. No sugar. That’s the basic version.

I make my own nut milk, so whenever I have some I use it for the hot chocolate.

Coconut sugar or maple syrup to taste if I want the sweetness. Nut milk is quite sweet though, so I don’t always need it.

Coconut milk or coconut cream if I’ve got some around from cooking.

Orange zest sometimes, or one drop of orange essential oil.

I often bump it up with a splash of rum or vodka, if it’s a pudding treat after supper.

I’ve tried using real actual chocolate but that only works if you’re using a fatty fluid, some kind of milk.

I’ve got powdered berries and I keep meaning to try adding some of that. But it’s sweet and tart and I don’t want tart hot chocolate.

The vanilla extract is expensive but it makes all the difference to the end result.

I was really impressed with it, despite being unsure when she offered it to me. I'll have a look at that one and whatever else they have. From my first sip of the rose Turkish Delight one I knew I'd found my new favourite hot chocolate.

we used to go to a place in Manchester (now sadly closed down) that made hot chocolate with water and chocolate, aztec style - it's really nice, though I've found emulsifying a bit hit or miss at home.

Good call. I’ll do some digging for technical know how.

Despite no liking Turkish Delight myself, I can imagine a Turkish Delight hot chocolate being very good indeed.

I went to Hotel Chocolat outlet for research this evening.:hmm: You can buy the velvetiser for £99 but if you join their ViP club you can get it for £69.95. They also sell refurbished ones for £50.95.
