being bullied at work

On a personal level, are there sympathetic people who you can vent and talk to about this at work, even if they're not in a position to do anything?

When I was bullied by my first boss, I was so grateful to the colleague who I talked to me after work and told me outright that she and everyone else thought I was being treated totally unfairly.

oh aye. EVERYONE hates the cretin. and i mean everyone x

believe me, it's been fucking tempting. not only is she a bully, but she does stuff like spend thousands of pounds of charity funds to her own gain. the idea of setting up a holy moly style anon twitter with stuff like:

"which head of **************** partnerships of a well known ******** charity recently spent £**K having her CV updated??"

very tempting and i shit you not. i have so much dirt on her, but only via unorthodox means :(

Sorry you're going through this :(

I've got some ideas here, especially relating to the above - but I think you're wise to see whether she keeps her job first.

i would love to discuss it all with you babe. shes hideous. still but, the PA will find out on monday so let's wait and tell. i was told by an employment lawyer today that they investigated the grievance illegally, so i hope for my employers sake they are using this restructure as a way to get rid. otherwise it's tribunal time, for sure xx

In cases like this - request a one-to-one meeting, or just corner her, and address the issues one by one.
Let her give out all the abuse and incriminate herself by asking her loaded questions, ask her about senior staff and wait for her to slag them off.

Just make sure you have a video camera hidden on your person or in a strategically placed lever arch file, with a little black tape over the red recording light, and definitely make sure the microphone is picking up everything she says.

Then get a pal to edit the video removing all your questions and any shots with you in them, get it copied to DVD, get it duplicated and send one copy to each head of department.

Extreme? Yes.

But the bitch is making you ill, and she deserves it by all accounts.

Awr :( Stay off sick for Monday too at least ... just remove yourself from the situation until it's clearer what's going on. Book appt with your GP re stress symptoms, just in case. And let's see what happens on Monday. It's daft saying try to relax a bit in the meantime - but try anyway lol. Tactics discussion after then, yeah? x x x

If she is bullying more than one person, then shouldn't it be articulated as that - complaints from multipe staff. A company may not want to get into individual bullying allegations - but equally they may well want shot of someone who is causing such disruption.

It may be the best way to articulate it - as in, 'consider the damage being done to the company and our relationship with clients, by this bullying behaviour', which may get more consideration than the (entirely legitimate) complaint, 'I'm being bullied'.

If this is happening to many people there must be some way of getting together and turning the tables on her. But you're probably wise to wait and see.

It's the sort of thing that Private Eye might cover, without the same levels of substantiation required by "ordinary" journos. From my understanding, they editorial standard is that it should be "true", rather than "not gonna get us done for libel" like more mainstream papers. Would reach a wide range of establishment figures as well, if they ran with it, including in the charity sector. strobes @ private-eye . co . uk - can't hurt to email them and ask. Sort of thing that might be covered by the "in the back" team, especially if the grievance can be shown to be handled illegally. Careful, though.

yeh holding fire on all revenge/whistle-blowing until i've given the organisation a chance to sort it out. the investigation was illegal in the sense that they didn't interview anyone involved in it, which they absolutely have to, by law. it's like investigating a murder without interviewing any of the witnesses. its not that the HR team are so incompetent that they don't know they law, rather i think they knew that the restructure was on its way and this would be the organisation's opportunity to get rid with minimum fuss/cost. i fucking hope so anyway, and they are lucky we're giving them this chance to sort it like this and not raising merry hell

ok. she's had the meeting to discuss the outcome of last week's interview. she came out looking very subdued. went straight out with one of her peers (also a bitch). HR were in the meeting. it overran significantly. it doesn't look like good news as she'd be so smug she'd be unable to contain herself if she got it. but we're yet to find out for sure. will update you all as soon as i hear. i feel totally sick.

Fingers crossed for the happy ending. Though I think it would be nice for her to get the boot and understand that she got it for being a bitch rather than 'restructuring'.

Good luck dolly.

if she doesn't get it, it will be because of all her sustained campaign of bullying and underhandness, i've no doubt. the restructure is just a way of the organisation doing it without it being dragged through a tribunal. if she was any good at what she does, she'd get it. there are no other internal candidates.

anyway, all staff announcement end play tomorrow. fingers crossed they'll do the right thing

Have you thought of trying Private Eye, or leaking to one or two sector-specialised bloggers?

we'll see. she's not returned to the office this afternoon, which in my mind's eye is a good sign. she had a 121 with me this afternoon, which she didn't show up for, or cancel.

thanks all for the PMs of support - watch this space!

Oooh, that sounds positive dolly!

Not posted on this thread as couldn't really offer any more advice but I hope you get the right result for you and your colleagues.
