BBC presenter Huw Edwards suspended over paying for sexual pics.

No excuse
I was brought up in the same village
No excuse
There were/are puritanical people there including the Edwards family
No excuse
And there is all that bollocks and pressure wrt Oxbridge
No excuse
My cousins got it and one was made to feel ashamed for going to a lesser red brick
No excuse
It's not some backwater out of the way place, the M4 goes near enough etc
Not a fucking excuse and a pretty pathetic attempt tbf

One of my sons did his Masters for one year at Merton College Oxford. Thank god for that, he’d be banged up by now if he hadn’t.
Chite excuse, and these Lawyers get actual money for coming up with that stuff.

The Merton College graduation meal was ace, especially as I am a veggie.
UCL has been the worst by a distance. Royal Holloway quite nice, and Bristol very nice.

No, but it’s a higher percentage than in other places.
Possibly, but would also say that the workers outnumber the nobs. Of course, you rarely hear from rank and file, especially when the corporation doesn't encourage opinion or grievances from them in the public sphere. Most people tend think of the people in front of the camera, as opposed to elsewhere in the organisation.

That led me to another thought, one that’s been touched on, but is very uncomfortable, and to which I don’t know the answer.

When Brass Eye got Dr Fox to say “Paedophiles have more genes in common with crabs than they do with you and me”, they were jolting us into recognising that though we call their crimes “inhuman”, they are not. Their crimes are something humans are not only capable of, but which humans carry out all too often.

How? In what circumstances does a human being do this to another? What is it that prevents me from doing this? I suspect the answer is at least in part to do with power. But just as the crimes of the Nazis were carried out not by other people, but by people, it is something we need to confront and understand.
It seems unfathomable to most people, but the world is teeming with these sick fucks.
Look at Japan. They outlawed "Child pornography" and raised the age of consent from 13 just recently, but only after nationwide protests.
One member of the house of representatives said he would find it absurd if a 50-year-old man had sex with a 14-year-old girl and went to jail for it!
It's like they're doing their best to facilitate paedos, and prevent them from being brought to justice.
Under Japanese law, when they find an abusive image, they need to identify the child, confirm they are underage and, in order for an investigation to proceed, the victim has to bring charges. Arrests will only be made if the evidence against the perpetrator can guarantee a conviction, so it’s a lot tougher to prosecute than in the UK.
Cartoons depicting child sexual abuse are still perfectly legal. "Lolicon" cartoons often depict the violent sexual abuse of children, and they're perfectly legal.
There are bars and cafes where you can pay for a date with a child, FFS!
There’s a street in Tokyo known as "JK alley", or "schoolgirl alley", from the Japanese Joshi Kosei, meaning high school girl.
There, teenagers in school uniform sell their time to passers-by, while their minders hover in the background.
Men pay to hold hands, go for a walk or have a cup of coffee with the girls. Some even pay to sleep on a girl's lap.
This is all legitimate, above board and legal.
Japan is also home to 300 "JK cafes", where adult men pay to hang out with underage girls (the age of consent in Japan is 18).
In the new BBC Three documentary, Young Sex For Sale in Japan, Stacey Dooley visits a JK cafe in Tokyo.
“In this bar, £35 will get you forty minutes with a girl of your choice and unlimited booze,” she says.
In some cafes, men can also pay for "walking dates" – time with the girls away from the cafe. What happens in that time is up to the girls and their clients.
It's hard to believe this shit is still not completely outlawed worldwide, but it seems it's still considered acceptable, by some, and until we start dishing out proper, fitting sentences, it's not going to stop.
Edwards should have got 5 years, and all of his wealth removed, because now that he's been caught, and will hopefully be a social pariah, he'll probably just up sticks and buy a nice retirement place in Japan, and continue to facilitate child sexual abuse. .

I am at an advanced age.
I am sure some others of both or all genders would agree with me.
The memories of my experiences of being sexually attacked three times by strangers when a naive young boy under the age of eleven still remains with me over fifty years later. I never resolved things because of my sense of shame.
The victims are an important part of this story, much more than the million words spoken by people about Edwards

I am sorry that you were abused.
I honestly believe pedophiles should never ever have access to children.
Ever. My experience aged 11 on a bus from school turned me from a very cheery happy trusting outgoing kid into a very withdrawn child. I literally changed me overnight.
I actually believe very strongly that pedophiles should be medically castrated. I don't give a fuck about their right to anything
Pedophiles damage children at a stage when they are brand new to the world...a stage where they are trying to.learn about the world. The impact is lifelong and impacts every single minute of your life.

This asshole... Huw Edwards? He's responsible for little boys being abused. By viewing and paying for images of young boys being abused..he is responsible for their abuse. Along with every single person who views the images.

I want to see him rot in jail for life tbh. And all pedophiles along with him.

Looks to me like there are plenty of people on here with very strong views as to what should have happened to Edwards, so I'm thinking he can't show his face in public again or he's likely to get seriously assaulted.

He might have plenty of cash and a nice house but that's going to be his prison unless he fucks off abroad and even then he's going to have to watch his back.

“I didn't get into Oxford” does seem like a pretty poor excuse. Man was the biggest news anchor on British TV. For like ages.

He'll be jealous of people like me who were born in Oxford, but didn't get into Oxford Uni by the sounds of it.
No sign of any logic in the mitigation. But fancy lawyers can make just about any old cobblers sound reasonable.

Not going to Oxford should’ve been like a badge of honour

These days you can say you went to Oxford but omit the bit where you actually went to Oxford Brookes University. I've heard of the truly woeful Etonians who didn't get into
Oxford Uni doing that.

It's silly, but it is a real effect and has got Brookes some sizeable donations from posh folk over the years. To the extent that it is actually a pretty decent University these days. You can do a lot worse than Brookes. (standard caveat of "a good University is actually defined by your study area and not averaged stupid charts in the Times" I work at a very low ranked University, but we still have courses that are in the top ten in the UK.)

I read a police paper on this on the last week - because I was looking to back up my supposition that they should all be sent a penalty colony/death camp on the South Sandwich Islands - and it turns out that a fairly high percentage of those who get caught fairly early on aren't *really nonces, but 'thrill seekers' who aren't getting off on the images per se, but on the risk/badness of it.

As a rule, they tend not to reoffend.

Which doesn't help their real life victims one bit, obviously.

Being a 'glass half empty, and you've probably gobbed in it anyway...' guy, I'm still in the 'festival poncho, mars bar, and the South Sandwich Islands' camp, but I'm still note sure whether Edwards is a 'thrill seeker, with real live victims', who will take up bungy jumping for his next kick, or if he's actually a nonce.

Anyway, burn him - obvs.

I'm not sure if the distinction is that clear cut. I have always assumed the transgeessive aspect was at least part of why people did it. Particularly where very young children are involved. But maybe I just cannot get my head around someone having a sexual interest literal babies.

I'd take that with a large pinch of salt.
Question: Why were you looking at pictures of child sexual abuse?
Answer 1: I'm a sick, sweaty nonce paedo and deserve to die.
Answer 2: I'm not a sick, sweaty nonce paedo that deserves to die. It was a one-off thrill seeking thing.
I can't see many opting for number 1.

Oxford Brookes is a good university. The thing with certain Etonians (not all) is they put more value on being able to say "I went to Oxford" than the University itself.
It's all about the networking and job opportunities after Uni.

I've taught at Brookes. It has definitely made a difference on my CV, and on job opportunities.

To the subject.

I think he's got off lightly. He should do time. At least the six months he was given, and with no remission. He should be on the register for life.

I don't think he should be stripped of his wealth as that would unfairly impact on his family.

He got what I expected, given how weak the sentencing guidelines are for the crime.

His wife is probably going to file for divorce, so they'll be fine. I think the family home is paid off and could be worth between £4 to £6 million.

Money wise, his main loss is from his media career now being toast. Even if he were able to get work, he'd not
be earning anything near what he was on at the height of his BBC Career. I have no sympathy for him.

I'd be surprised if anyone would wish to employ him as a presenter although he was a good but vastly overpaid one.

He was a portentous old fuck: good at waffling with a straight face whilst a royal hearse was being driven far too slowly from Westminster to Windsor.

They'll have to give Dimbleby a quick PAT test and then plug him in again

The podcast Hunting Warhead is an incredibly disturbing and insightful investigation into the world that Edward’s helped fund. Of course user discretion advised. Incredible journalism and some incredible police work, too. Really worth a listen, true crime at its most valuable. Gruelling and exhausting to listen to but glad I did, even just to hear the evil piece of shit (Warhead) at the centre of it get sent down for life.
