Why would England want to vote to break itself up in order to keep/lose Scotland then?

Because that’s how an incorporative union works - and it’s the only vote you’d get.

And remember, it was England who wanted an incorporation in the first place, partly because it preserved their options for maintaining a stranglehold on power and lessened the potential extra influence that Scotland would gain via a federal union.
