Banning Private Jets

Boeing may have stopped making em but there are still about 500 747s still working, will be a while yet til they are all museums pieces...In part because of your question 'when are these new planes coming?' Demand for aircraft outstrip airframe manufacturing in prettymuch all market segments.

Approx 22000 private jets in the world, half of which are is the US
I am surprised by that number, I would have guessed a few hundred at most

Not that I’d lose any sleep if private jet use was banned, or wish to make this a whatabouttery comment, but surely the leisurely use of large yachts must be orders of magnitude more environmentally damaging than private jet use. How many gallons of diesel per day does your average 75-foot posh small yacht guzzles?

About 25 years ago my boss was invited to sail by his very rich mate between Barcelona and Ibiza on pretty much the smallest Sunseeker model. It cost the guy £1,500 in fuel then, which must have been shit loads of litres. Fuck knows the Russian oligarch-class super yachts consume per mile.

Never mind the fact that whereas the journey could be undertaken in a far more efficient manner, at least private jets usually provide a transportation service that in most cases is going to take place out of the necessity of travel. Whereas all those lovely 1%ers who spend 50k to hire a Below Deck-style luxury boat do so just to hop between Mallorca and Ibiza for a weekend’s break, whereas they could have rented an super exclusive luxury castle that’s far more impressive for less money and about 5% of the environmental footprint.

Certainly not an either/or observation, but we should be talking about luxury yacht usage as much or far more than private yet use. But for whatever reason celebrities, politicians and likes seem to get far less criticism (if any) when photographed relaxing on a yacht touring the Med than for flying on private planes.

Bezos has a new boat, it has sails, but still goes under engine power much of the time. It has a support vessel the size of a regular super-yacht, that has the helipads on so he can get from PJ to heli to ship. Then there's the 100's of staff involved in supporting this, they need to be ferried in from around the world and replaced every month or so with fresh crew.

The carbon foot of him lording it about the place must be knocking on an entire small African nation's.

The yacht has a figurehead modelled on Lauren Sanchez, Evil Overlord's current girlfriend. This could be a tad awkward if they break up.
Tbh if I were in his position not totally sure how Mrs Q would react to me having her as the boat's figurehead.
She would utterly love the idea or utterly hate it she definitely would not be indifferent about it.
In fact since she is downstairs at the moment due to it being half term I will ask her when I go to make a cuppa at 10 and see what she says.

She'll think you've finally lost the fucking plot, tbf.

I chickened out, when I went downstairs she was watching a video to prepare for one of her classes next week and there was no plausible way I could work my question into the conversation without as you say her thnking i had 'finally lost the fucking plot'

"What's that video about dear?"
"Maths, calculating motion and acceleration"
"That's interesting, what do you think about used for a wooden model for a ship's figurehead?"

No matter how I played that conversation in my head there were no rational answers to the barrage of questions that would have followed. I will have to bide my time and pick my moment carefully.

Pretty hard to argue against the banning of private jets:

Private jets cause 14 times more pollution than commercial flights.

Yet billionaires get massive tax subsidies that help them fly private all over the world. They're getting a bargain for destroying the climate.

But new laws to tax private jets are being introduced around the world, and momentum is finally building to shut down this billionaire free-ride.

Add your name to demand taxing private jets -- when enough join, we'll launch a media blitz in key countries:

No more free rides for billionaires, tax private jets

From the US to France, governments have introduced legislation that would finally tax private jets, and some airports including Schiphol in Amsterdam are banning private jets entirely.

The top 1% are responsible for more than twice as much carbon dioxide pollution as the bottom 50% and yet these billionaires continue to pollute our skies and worsen the climate crisis without any accountability.

Lawmakers in the US are proposing a tax on private jet fuel use, and those funds would go towards climate justice and support for transitioning to renewable energy. But the ultra-wealthy are also ultra-powerful and if we want to succeed in reining them in, we need everyone's help to make our call huge.

This truly is a global crisis and legislation in one country can impact not just other governments' legislation but the actual global climate. To truly address climate change, we need everyone everywhere. Add your name to the petition and share this widely -- we'll deliver our call to key lawmakers around the world.

Tell governments: no more free rides for billionaires, tax private jets

Had a punter just this week wanting to take a dog from Palma to Salzburg, the only direct carrier doesn’t allow dogs in cabin, so they went with NetJets. That was pretty fucking disgusting. They own a company you will all have heard of, can’t imagine anyone on here buys their crap, in spite of them being present on many a high street here and worldwide.

This post is the first I have ever heard of NetJets, just googled them to discover they have a fleet of 100+ private aircraft for lugging rich people around. There is a whole world out there that I know nowt about isn't there?

Not read any of this bur what's a private jet v a non private one? Is more usage of the input to the plane worse or better and to what degree. What's rhe £€$¥ etc per mile per passenger equivalent and how's that relate to other miles. Etc.i have no opinion. Convince.me either way.

there is an argument for doing that very thing in that it would answer your questions
It could be also argued that's a small percentage and the rest of it makes up the most overall. It's unfair certainly on a per person basis but also in the recycle your plastic v whatever country dumping them in the sea it's also a negligible action. I don't use straws now but it's useless. V the packaging I receive from online sales is hundreds of times less. Not complaint about either just a general comment about overall effectiveness every little helps. Unless its multiplied several times then thrown in the sea.

Need an international consensus we won't get. I don't have an answer to this.

The suggestion is that if you read the thread such things as "what's a private jet v a non private one" would be clear. Or, if it wasn't, you could add a reply saying "this part isn't clear".

Of course, happy to oblige, why should you waste your time having to read the thread? Someone like you is far too important . So a privet jet is a jet made of privet : see below.

Whilst a non private jet isn’t.

Happy to help.

It gets worse, the runway is shared with his neighbours, there's a bunch of houses just like that all with access to the same runway. Clearly only Travolta has the Boeing 707, but the neighbours have jets and shit that they use as everyday transport, which is why they live there.

Dread to think what the house insurance is like - having a plane parked next to it with presumably thousands of litres of fuel in it increases the risk considerably.

If you look on Google Maps Villa John Travolta is next doors to Jumbolair sharing the runway with them. Ironically there is a foodbank about a mile or so away where the customers no doubt get a great view of the excutive jets taking off and landing.
