Banksy-funded refugee rescue boat is 'overloaded and stranded at sea'

What's the point of having a world reaching navy, all the kit, trained crews if it doesn't get used to you know, save lives.

Same as the main purpose of the other armed services; appeal to the aesthetic ideals of old white male voters while keeping a large cohort of thuggish fuckwits in work and off the street.

They should be collected and shipped back to where they are coming from. Help is needed in Africa not Africans in Europe. They don’t belong here. All those boats are encouraging those people to take a deadly risk and what for? Europe doesn’t want more immigrants.

Well you'll not be here for long, so you may as well just fuck off now.

ETA - He's gone, ban hammer came down in under a minute of me reporting that post, must be a record. :D

So many logical and factual flaws in one post. It’s quite impressive in a depressing “Christ, do people really believe this guff?” kind of way...

My experience of talking to refugees in places like Calais is that so-called pull factors are largely irrelevant. The push tends to be all-consuming. Folk aren't able to shop around for traffickers with the best sales pitch either; the general experience seems to be more like one of getting kidnapped, robbed and then shoved out into the sea, possibly with the direct collusion of whatever state you're trying to leave. There aren't tripadvisor reviews invovled.
There is a Syrian trip advisor type site on Facebook. Did you watch exodus? The boat that basically sank and they called the lifeguard- they gave the smuggler a stinking review :)

But educated syrians with resources in 2015/6 in the Med is a different kettle of fish to Calais now, of course.

Yes and few Syrians will be going to Europe via Tunisia etc.

I didn’t know, apparently there are quite a few now. And Algeria/Libya. And some stopping along the way, and building Syrian communities there.
I guess that’s the thing- if you close one door people will find another- there will be as many routes as there are people.

Yes, they do believe it. That way, they can hold revolting views while remaining untroubled by fact. And any argument with such people usually ends, if not with threats of violence, then with them declaring "Well, that's what I believe, and you can't persuade me otherwise with your facts".

Looks like all the media attention could be working, Marseille has announced they are opening their port to the Louise Michel, hopefully that offer extends to the Sea-Watch 4, now the migrants have transferred over.

Benoît Payan has tweeted that Marseille's port is open for the Sea-Watch 4, English translation -
Marseille opens its Port to those who are in distress, to the castaways to those who need help. If the Sea-Watch 4 requests it, we will open our Port

Just a shame it's around 600 miles away, but at least the ship would be unlikely to be detained, unlike in Italy.

Interesting on how they got in this mess. Brendan is a firefighter and all round dude who has volunteered in the Med (and Calais, and on the islands, and does loads of calm explaining and refuting racist myths too: great guy and worth a follow if you care about this stuff)

"Just imagine that it was white people on that boat. Can you imagine rescue centers not picking up the phone? Can you imagine a vessel that rescues white people abandoned at sea? Can you imagine the distress call of white people being ignored for hours and hours?"
Well no-I for one can't imagine that.

I dunno. If they were sufficiently "other," then sure. I could imagine Russians or Poles being left stranded just the same way. And poor white people are treated like crap in their own countries often enough.

That's not to downplay the racism that's part of this, but unfortunately I think people are capable of treating their fellow humans like non-beings even if they're of the same race - they find some way to other them instead.

You'll be an old white male one day and then . . .

Now the spotter plane for the Louise Michel and other NGO rescue ships has been grounded.

Italian authorities have grounded an aircraft used by the non-government organization Sea-Watch to search for migrant boats in distress. Sea-Watch says it is a deliberate ploy to stop them from reporting what is taking place in the Mediterranean.

Italy on Friday issued a "prohibition to depart" order on the "Moonbird" humanitarian aircraft, Sea-Watch announced. The Italian authorities have "closed our eyes on the Mediterranean sea," said Sea-Watch spokesperson Giorgia Lunardi in a video posted on Twitter.
"Since Friday, our airplane Moonbird is grounded with a prohibition to depart and monitor what is happening in the central Mediterranean between Lampedusa and Libya."

I just hope the Sea-Watch 4 doesn't end-up being detained by the Italians, like its sister ship & several other rescue ships.
It's been anchored up in Palermo for a week now, the Banksy Boat just seems to have vanished,I have this vision of them turning off their transponder and sneaking out of port under cover of darkness
