I still fancied Lyles to improve in the final and he did. I confidently predict that IF he (I think he will) wins the 200m - it WON'T be by 5 one thousandths of a second 😁

Lyles is the fastest man in the world.

Except the shadow of Usain is over everyone. No one is within 2 tenths of a second of him over 100 metres.

The Redmond race absolutely breaks me. I can't even get through describing it to someone who hasn't seen it :(

Still remember his dads t shirt “have you hugged your foot today”

The Late Jim Redmond transitioned to the ancestors aged 81 on 2 October 2022, at which point both the British Olympic Association and the International Olympic Committee paid tribute to him for his contribution to one of the Olympic movement's most iconic scenes.

I can't watch that Derek Redmond race either. Heartbreaking. I remember watching it live as a kid and being so excited to see the race - he was expected to get a medal, him and Sally Gunnell both. And then he stopped suddenly and we all wondered why and then the camera panned to him in tears with the pain. Ugh.

I didn't hear the comments but maybe a ham fisted way of saying how the dominance of the US and Jamaica has lessened?
It’s a banner on screen, not just a comment. There are lots of competitors from developing countries which aren’t in Africa which is great to see too. It just seems a bit arbitrary

I watched that moment again the other day and cried all over again. The thing that struck me the most: Redmond Snr politely but firmly fending off all the officials who kept trying to interfere, like "no fuck your rules, this is my son". Pure parenting.

Sifan Hassan gets bronze silver.

Her turn of speed is something else, she went from 8th to 4th in ten seconds when she decided to go

She's either holding back a bit because she knows what she has still to come or she's lost a little bit of the top speed endurance doing the marathon training.

Either way magnificent 🩷

Yeah, that's one of the many aspects that get me going. There's also how Derek immediately, but only, breaks down once his dad gets there, plus the fact that it stopped being about winning or times long ago, at that point it was simply about finishing the race, crossing the line at the Olympics.

Ach, it's brutal.

yeah she went for the gears so quickly.

I think probably the latter, marathon training kills the top speed at least temporarily and in a slow race it favours the 1500m specialists

I hadn’t seen Hassan interviewed until the other day, a real character and just seems to be enjoying herself

Did the US women's discuss thrower win a lo
a load of athletics equipment in Storage Hunter's? She's doing very well , it's just her coach looks the dead spit of the bald bloke

Not hugely relevant, but the seats in the Stade de France are absolutely awful. Probably the worst I've had to deal with at a major stadium.

Can't help feeling it'll be taking the edge off all the grandeur.
