This 100m final promises to be fascinating. Sha'Carri is going to need a much better start. If she's up there with the leaders after 50-60 I think she'll batter it but she may not be

Unfortunately German telly chose to show the women's football 1/4 final and is now showing the 800 women's swimming final and the penalty shootout for the football. :(

Oh what a shame for Daryll Neita. She was really close to a medal, again! Nothing if not consistent.

Congrats to Alfred - what a run

Wonder if the USA are regretting not putting Sydney McLaughlin in the relay. Can't wait for her and Femke to go head to head. That's gonna be a cracker of a race.

Congratulations to Thea LaFond on her historic Triple Jump victory - hopefully it will lift the spirits of her Hurricane Beryl-hit compatriots.

Amongst all the deserved plaudits for Bol, I did feel for the Belgian woman on the last leg, who fell from second to fourth (i.e. out of the medals), as women who looked about half a foot taller than her stormed past/away from her.

Like with every team sport, the result is the cumulative effort of everyone involved, but the visuals of it were pretty drastic. Imagine it must be pretty easy to feel like you've cost your teammates and country a medal as you cross the line. Hopefully she doesn't, and if she does her team can help her through it.

Charlotte Purdue has withdrawn from the marathon :( I'm gutted for her. She missed out on Tokyo for bullshit reasons (those stupid selectors again) despite being the strongest candidate for the team. She's got an ankle injury apparently.

I met her once the day before the Great North Run in 2020. She's absolutely tiny. She seemed very surprised I knew who she was

Crittenden putting in about as much effort in the hurdles as I do when walking around a supermarket. Commentators saying he might get DQd for tactically seeking a way thru to the final via the “best of the losers” race.

Darryl comfortably through to the 200m semi. Dina too, but she just doesn't look happy :(
She looked quality. Superb around the bend and then through in the home straight. And great interview, I’m glad she’s put the disappointment of fourth in the context it deserves to be.

Gabby Thomas the American looks in good form too. I’m surprised she’s not on their 4x1 or 4x4 relay team. I reckon she would do the lap very well.

Femke and Sydney comfortably through in the 400 hurdles. Sydney did make a mess of one hurdle hitting it and losing her stride, plus Femke ran 2 tenths faster but overall wouldn't read anything into that. I'd say Sydney is still clear favourite as amazing as Femke is.

On Eurosport for athletics to not have the constant bbc switching. Build up to 100m semis, Keely Hodgkinson semi and then the 100m final at the end of the evening

Asha Philip and Iwan Thomas (great hair) are the pundits.

While is must be gutting for Neita, very well done her! That's the best result in the women's 100m Olympics for GB for 64 years!🫡
Is there an obvious reason why British female sprinters haven't been as successful as the men? Gunnell and Ohuruogu are the only two I can remember being top notch, and it's a push to call the 400m hurdles a sprint.

I don't think the men have been that successful either? In the 100m, It's been 32 years since Linford Christie last medalled, Alan Wells won pretty much on default, in 1980, because of the American boycott and you have to go back to 1960 before that for last time GB medalled. Hopefully Zharnell Hughes can not get DQed, this time, and scrape onto the podium.

I’m so pleased to be able to watch this on Discovery+ so I can ditch my paedo-funding BBC licence.

As for why the British don’t do so well, it’s funding. American athletes win college scholarships where there is a massive amount of funding. There’s nothing similar here so unless U.K. athletes get into US colleges, they’re sunk. Athletics is really underfunded in the U.K.

Horrendous Derek Redmondesque injury for the Kenyan 400m runner just outside Charlie Dobson

Suspect Dobson will make the final and an outside chance of a medal
