Athletics

The amazing Faith Kipyegon just started out in the 5000m. Sifan Hassan upto her usual madness of several events, this time she's going for the 5,000/10,000 again but she's swapped the 1500m for the marathon! 😮

She deserves all the success she gets just for attempting all that distance.

I 🩷 Sifan Hassan. She is crazy in the best way. Her interview after winning the London marathon just encapsulated everything that anyone who has run a marathon feels. I really hope she does well.

I am suspicious of Kenyan athletes if I am honest.

Time for the mixed relay heats

I didn’t realise they had to be in the order man, woman, man, woman

I think they changed it after Tokyo where you could have any order. Was something to see the US go flat out and smash their own WR.

I think the Dutch when/if Femke Bol comes in will be challengers in the final.

Keely Hodgkinson up next amongst the women's 800m heats.

100m heats about to start

Louie Hinchliffe the up and coming British sprinter trained by Carl Lewis has a superb mullet, one of a few we have seen at the game so far

I was busy yesterday so I'm still catching up. Just seen Phoebe Gill's 800m heat. Bless her. I was shouting at her not to go to the front. She ran a really good race, can't wait to see how all 3 Brits get on.

I was a bit worried for her at one point but she was very honest in her assessment after the race. Said she couldn't believe how fast they went and wasn't sure if she would have enough but she did in the end. Fingers crossed her, Keely and Jemma get to the final without mishaps then who knows?

I reckon Gill has a good chance of making the final providing she keeps cool. Great experience for her whatever the outcome

Was just looking at the women's 100m sf's, very tough on paper. This would be the final if 9 women and all ran to PB's, very mouthwatering!

1 🇯🇲 T Clayton 10.86
2 🇺🇸 T Terry 10.82
3 🇱🇨 J Alfred 10.78
4 🇺🇸 S Richardson 10.65
5 🇯🇲 SA Fraser-Price 10.60
6 🇨🇮 MJ Ta Lou-Smith 10.72
7 🇺🇸 M Jefferson 10.80
8 🇬🇧 D Asher-Smith 10.83
9 🇬🇧 D Neita 10.90

Trouble with PBs is that they aren't always indicative of where an athlete is now. It's three years since Shelley-Anne Fraser-Price ran her 100 PB - this year she's 0.31 slower - and five years since Dina's. Whereas Sha'Carri Richardson is still arguably yet to hit her peak and ran her PB last year.

Dina Asher-Smith hasn’t made the final, didn’t look amazing in the semi, not a great start and then didn’t move through.

Denise Lewis is right, she doesn’t look her normal self

All on Neita now

Ewa Swoboda beat Dina I see (just been catching up on iplayer). I have a real soft spot for her. She's a 60m specialist really so I'm pleased she's into the final.

Will be cheering for Ewa and Darryl.

Times seem slow so far, the much vaunted track hasn’t produced fireworks yet. Believe it’s wet in Paris tonight which won’t help.

World record in mixed relay to be fair but it’s a new event

Meanwhile the women’s triple jump may see Dominica win their first ever medal

Thea Lafond has gone over 15 metres and leads currently!
