Athens Greece: Cops murder a 16 year old

I give you the communique from yesterday's assemby, the one that I attended

On the evening of Saturday December 20, and after the clashes in the area of the Polytechnic (one of the tens of massive clashes of
demonstrators and police which followed the murder of 15 year old Alexandros Grigoropoulos), a flood of rumors started to circulate around the area of the occupation of the NTUA [Polytechnic].

Continuous information about an invasion of the police into the space of the occupied Polytechnic University, in combination with the strategic movements of the riot police during the time of the clashes, foretold the obvious. The police plan to rush the occupation. Doing an end run around the dean's council [who would ordinarily have to approve suspension of asylum that prohibits police from entering universities], and offering the "earth and water" of the Polytechnic to the prosecutor, the police force, and the ministry of the interior, they sent the message indirectly but clearly, with threats and intimidation, that we have only "a few hours" left.

We answer them that we have as much time left as the part of society that has risen up and doesn't accept ultimatums, decides. That, for all of those who participated and participate now and will continue to do so in revolutionary practices, they had best respect them and fear them. These very men, these very women, these thousands of people who have risen up, the students, the workers, the jobless, the immigrants, our comrades, we call on them all to keep unceasing vigilant watch in the area of the Polytechnic, in view of the plotted invasion.

We call everyone to a mass presence at the occupation of the
Polytechnic.

We call you to a concert for solidarity and financial support for our imprisoned comrades in the uprising, On Monday at 6 p.m. in the area of the occupied Polytechnic University.

We will have the last word!

These days and nights are for Alexis!

Polytechnic Occupation, 12/21/08

Here is an update of what happened yesterday...

Things are usually slow on Sundays and that was the case yesterday. However, many local assemblies took place to decide further actions.

I have allready informed you about the polytechnic, about the general assembly that took place and the communique that was issued.

Also in Athens:
A demonstration took place in Kaisariani with around 200 people, some ATM machines were blocked.
In Ilion, there were two separate demonstrations, one called by leftists and one by anarchists. During the later one, 4 banks, a governmental unemployment office and some offices of the governmental party were attacked and had their windows and surveillance cameras smashed.

A group of 100 people went to around 15 theaters in Athens, interrupted the shows, unfolded banners and read communiques.
Early in the morning there was an examination at the scene of the murder, called by the Alex's family lawyer. The eyewitnesses which saw the cop raising his gun and shooting towards the kids attended and gave details of the incident.
Major media video: http://www.skai.gr/master_avod.php?id=104814&cid=1012&bc=1012&lsc=1
The occupants of the GSEE building decided to end the occupation and left the building.

In Thessaloniki, an assembly took place inside a church! The protesters entered to protect themselves from the cold and left after they discussed about further actions and protests.

The mainstream media also report the following attacks, all taking place early in the morning:
In central Athens against a bank and some surveillance cameras. In Nea Filadelthia (Athens) where 6 police cars were destroyed. In Nea Ionia (Athens) against a bank. In Virona, 2 cars were burned. In Iraklio against 2 banks and a car dealership.

No. Your vile bigotry, unsupported slurs and enthusiastic support for fascist police tactics is what stinks around here.

I'm not displaying bigotry. Bigots tend to use blanket words to cover any group they dislike.
So a bigot may use the word "shirtlifter" or "poof" to describe a homosexual male or may use a stupid word like "nigger" to dehumanise a person just for having the 'wrong' colour skin.
They may also use a word like "fascist" to dehumanise and discredit a group of people who only have in common that they are members of the police force.
All use of language like this is equally wrong.

As for unsupported slurs the OP accuses a man of murder but before a trial and with no evidence to support his allegation than the word of a few people with a clear agenda.
I'm sure that if I were to accuse you of raping a young girl with no evidence available except a couple of my mates who didn't like you there would be something for you to moan about but serious allegations against a man seems to be fine as long as it has a political end.

I know that if this was a death in the UK and you allowed such a biased thread title it would leave you open to court action. I have no idea about how that stands with this being in a foreign but still EU country but regardless of the law it's still allowing a man to be assumed guilty of murder without the right of a trial.

I'm not so much supporting the police as defending them against assumptions that if made by the extreme right against a racial minority would be shot down in flames on this very forum. (quite right too)

As for the rioters claiming police brutality I have just been watching footage of the riots on Press TV (Iran). The left are tossing petrol bombs at the cops and destroying property owned both by big business and I see a couple of small private cars on fire.
These cars are small things and not the sort owned by big business. That means a couple of normal people with a right headache trying to get back their hard earned cash if they manage at all.
Seems pretty brutal to me.

Elections are the way to gain political power and courts are there to decide who killed who and how it happens.

Like I said it stinks.

The Building of Teiresias on fire..... Teiresias is an organization that keeps record of all the unpaid checks, loans, credit cards etc .... It is the black list of the banks, if you get written on that list (because you are unable to pay) you cannot then take a loan or a cheque book or a credit card. Thousands will be glad to hear that Teiresias is burned :p

Some will be in genuine trouble and be unable to pay but I'm sure the worker's (That's a fucking joke) junta who decide what to burn did this one to save repaying legitimate loans.
The good news is that the data will be backed up on other computers so you have fucked up on that one pal. :p

Leaving aside the fact that you have no way of knowing this, just blind prejudice, it doesn't matter. Tragic as Alexandros' death was, it's not really about him.

No just making assumption of his guilt as others are doing with the cop.

It does make a difference what his history was.
If it turns out he has a history of serious violence and the cops were aware of this it makes their position stronger. If it turns out he was a good kid it weakens their position.

Maybe it was tragic but nothing has been proven yet about how it happened.

Direct questions

Ok lets try o see what is happening here.
We have had about three weeks of violence started by the death of a boy but I still have yet to see anyone give a simple and informative answer as to what your goals are with the riots.

So a direct question to those who are directly involved, What are you trying to achieve?

Simplified answers would be easier to digest. :)

To stop a politicised fascist police state which was creeping in.

Saturday night the prosecutor decided unilaterally to lift the asylum that prevents the police from entering university grounds. Only the disagreement of the provost board prevented a police invasion.
Acting on his own authority, the prosecutor on duty on Saturday evening, December 21, decided to lift the asylum [that normally applies to university grounds and prevents the entry of police onto the campus] for the National Polytechnic University of Athens, but in the end the police did not intervene, after the disagreement of the provost's advisory board.

Police intervention in the university schools under occupation in the coming days, with the argument that they are being used as staging areas for disturbances, by means of a judicial decision and not an academic one, is now an open possibility.

The occupations in the central universities are expected to continue through the holidays, while the schools close tomorrow for Christmas vacation and the students bid farewell with a rally at midday on Tuesday in Athens, and they have set a date for a new rally on January 9th, the anniversary of the murder of Nikos Teboneras (murdered during the student uprisings in 1990-91). In their company will be teachers from all grades, since the unions representing school teachers and university professors decided the day before yesterday to participate in the rally and to act in common with the students, while they are also discussing the possibility of a strike.

Telephone call from the Greek police force about intervention

As the "News" [mainstream Greek daily newspaper] learned, the provost and vice-provost of the NTUA, Mr. K. Moutzouris and Mr. G. Spathis, this past Saturday evening during the episodes in the region around the university, received a phone call from the police force, which informed them a plan was in the works for intervention, since the prosecutor on duty decided that inside the building there were felonies being carried out, such as the construction of explosives. The law gives to police the right to intervene with an order from the prosecutor, even without a decision to lift asylum from university officials, when it is determined that felonies are being committed.

"Dangerous for victims"

The provost authorities of the university disagreed with this decision. "I believe that the clearing of the Polytechnic [of the occupying students] must happen with dialogue and not police intervention. I hope that the occupation will have ended peacefully before the holidays," Mr. Moutzouris told the "News". "The lifting of university asylum is a political decision and if they want, let them make it, as they have the right to do even without our consent. We don't bring up such an issue because there is the danger of having victims, and also because there hasn't been serious damage to the university and the issue of occupations is more general", added Mr. Spathis.

Under occupation are about 160 schools in universities and technical institutes across the country, with basic centers the Law School, the Economic University and the Polytechnic University in Athens, and the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki.

about the asylum of the NTUA (Polytechnic)

My view is -not based on political ideology- that they won't lift the asylum. There has been a lot of talk and a lot of articles written the last few days, but the government and its paid accolades have confined themselves to a lot of verbosity and I doubt that -under the current situation and general dissatisfaction- they will proceed to any action. At the same time we still need to show our support in any way possible. I want to believe that
NOTHING IS OVER YET. IT IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

*the number of schools occupied are disputed by OLME(the teachers' union) , the Ministry of Education, and the students' own records- 160 schools Dimitri I think that's from the Ministry of education's records, maybe ? Until yesterday ASOE's blog was talking about 800 schools all over Greece-can't find anything today.

Maybe I should use university departments and not schools because you confused them with high schools. Yes about 800 high schools have been occupied that is correct

about warning shots "ricocheting"

from the examination at the MURDER site some useful news were leaked to the press: two possible points where the bullet/bullets ricocheted, one is a cemented ball at the pavement -at least 40 cm from the ground- and the other is a wall, specimens were collected from both. How a warning shot(that should have been fired in the air, IF at all) or 2 or 3 can ricochet IN THE DIRECT DIRECTION of the kids is beyond any logical or unbiased argument. The testing will continue in the next days.

*I stand corrected about the unis, thanks for all your feedback Dimitri

Updates on today's events ...

Well today is a bit quiet day... Tomorrow there will be a big student and workers demonstration in the centre of Athens again.

This morning, a general assembly took place at the taken over Law Department building of the Uni of Athens

Some arrested comrades were passing from the prosecutor at the courts today in Evelpidon in Athens, and a solidarity gathering took place for them. I am not sure how many people attended.

A live concert has allready started at the taken over polytechnic building, the money that will be raised will go for the arrested comrades.

Also in Exarchia area in Athens, the citizents there are doing a general assembly as we speak in order to discuss for what is happening up to now, and their further actions.

A general assembly is also taking place at the taken over Town Hall of Ag Dimitrios (a suburb of Athens)

In Thessaloniki at the taken over public library building there is a general assembly in progress.

Also in Thessaloniki again, there is an open general assembly at the occupied cinema "Olympion"

Finally in Thessaloniki a general assembly of the taken over Theatre department is starting now.

The Polytechnic, ASOEE, Law Dept, Chalandri Town hall, Ag Dimitrios Town Hall, N Filadelfia arts centre, N Smirni Town hall and Giannena Town hall occupations are still standing.

800 High schools and about 180 university departments in all Greece are still occupied.

TOMORROW BIG STUDENT WORKERS DEMONSTRATION STARTING AT 14:00 IN PROPYLAIA, CENTRE OF ATHENS.

NOTHING IS OVER YET.

(I still dont know what are the decisions of the general assemblies, some are still taking place now as we speak, if I have any further info I will come back here)

OMG, do I really have to answer that you fucking idiot.

something fucking else that doesn't criminalise, brutalise and distance it's people.

:D:D

So one that makes petrol bomb legal, removes citizenship for police, bankers and businessmen so you can toss the legal firebombs at them without brutalising your own people.
I assume not distancing them means if they are close you have a better chance of hitting them with the afore mentioned petrol bombs.

Ever heard of elections?

I suspect that you have but don't like them as they are a fascist power grab.

I suspect that you know very little about anything but feel obliged to spout your pointless opinions anyway lest by your silence anyone should think that there's actually something worthwhile going on in that hollow void which lies between your ears.

But I may just be wrong. Ho hum.

general assemblies at the occupied unis in Athens

The Law uni held a general assembly at the occupied uni at 6.00 pm after the demo of the students that took place at around 3.00. They decided to stop the occupation but will continue the protest even during the holiday season and there is a call for a general demo for the 9/1/2009. Everybody on the streets.
There were general assemblies for 6.00 pm at both the Polytechnic and the ASOEE unis, but no news yet from those.

there was a call for assembly outside the Megaro Mousikis (music concert hall in Athens) from artists at 8.00 pm

Hello all. I am still in Athens centre, I will go home later and give you maybe a better update of todays events. I will give you a rather small summary now ...

A relatively big student demonstration took place today in Athens. It started at 14:00 from Propylaia, and passed from the centre of Athens. More than 5000 students attended, as well and some workers, in a peacefull demonstration, showing to everyone that nothing is over yet... On the beggining of the demo, one police car did the mistake to get in the middle of the gathered people and as a result the demonstrators trashed it and turned it on its side.. Riot police came, and with the help of other policemen they turned the police car and drove it away....

After the end of the demo, general assemblies took place at the occupied buildings of the Law Department and the Polytechnic. I will try to translate for you the announcements, if there will be any..

A demo was also called in Nea Filadelfia (a suburb of Athens) outside the Police Station of that area... I do not have any news yet of what happened there.

Also a demo was arranged today in Thessaloniki, I have no news of what happened there either yet.

Something very wierd happened this morning, we are still trying to find out what, but I personally believe that it was all staged... Opposite the new buidlings of the polytechnic there is the camp of RIOT police.. This morning someone shot at a police bus that was coming out the camp maybe with an AK47 or a G3... 2 bullets hit the bus, 1 on the back wheel and one more at its engine. 26 police men were on board and nobody got hurt. It is very possible that the shooter was inside the area of the occupied polytechnic when the attack took place.... Later on the day someone called the zougla.gr website and claimed responsibility for the attack.. they are supposed to be a group called "Public Direct Action".

It is wierd because NOONE knows them... completely. There is no group like that, nobody from the movement has ever heard of them. The students from the occupied polytechnic with their announcement clearly stated that they have no relation with this attack. An another wierd fact is that this group took responsibility of the attack but never issued an announcement, a manifest, something saying what their goals are and why they shot at that bus... The fact that they called that specific website is also an another point, the journalist that runs that website (Makis Triantafulopoullos) is well known to have connections with undercover police and the Greek Intelligence Service, and I clearly do not believe that any group or movement would choose to call him ...

On previous posts here I have told you some things about the asylum, and explained you that the police are actively trying to find ways to cancel the asylum and get in the occupied universities. Having this in mind, I believe that this attack this morning was staged by the police because of that very reason. If you watch on the news today on every channel, all journalists, "experts", politians and policemen are talking about this attack, using it in order to create a bad image of this uprising to the public, and demonize some "hooligan anarchists", hoping that in this way they will shift the public's attention from the demands of the uprising youth, and turn them against it...

I will keep you posted on any interesting updates about this...

A solidarity demo for the arrested demonstrators of the last days, has been arranged for tomorrow.

CHRISTMASS IS CANCELED, WE HAVE AN UPRISING

MERRY CRISIS AND A HAPPY NEW FEAR

THESE ARE THE DAYS OF ALEXIS

Stella this is not exactly accurate, I was in that assembly but left before its end. The occupation CONTINUES, but the student groups are leaving... How this will happen in practice I dont really know as I left, so lets wait for the announcement

Yeap if you read on the comments below the first post there you will see that there are also people there saying the same as me :)

OK

I'm not trying to misinform, I stand corrected - again- let's wait for the announcement

Announcement from the OCCUPIED NTUA (Polytechnic)

Tuesday 23 December 2008

ANNOUNCEMENT

While a general assembly was taking place at the occupied (taken over) Polytechnic about the completion of the operation of the occupation with criteria relating the fight and the ways of the continuity of the occupation, another element was added : The demand from the ministry of internal affairs and from the police that was passed to us from many political and academic people, to evacuate immediately otherwise there would be an invasion from the police.
Based on this added factor as well, the answer from the occupiers that still remain inside the Polytechnic grounds is that the Polytechnic does not belong to the ministry of internal affairs or the police, i.e. the the murderers of Alexandros Grigoropoulos and of many more people, in order for us to surrender it to them.
The Polytechnic (NTUA) belongs to all the people who fight, and we'll evacuate from it when we decide, not because of blackmails or deadlines, but only based on criteria of our fight, on criteria of the social action.

NO PASARAN!

A bit more info on what happened at the polytechnic yesterday and Filadelfia

During yesterday's assembly and talks about the future of the occupation in the Polytechnic University, there was a new threat from the cops saying that if the university is not emptied, the cops will raid. The effort to scare off the occupants worked the other way around for the cops and although the occupants had decided to end the occupation, this threat made them change their mind. A lot of people arrived at the university in order to defend it if the police tried to invade but the cops made no move. The occupants are clearly stating that the cops will not gonna have the last word on when the occupation will end. It will end when the occupants decide to and the threats by the cops just makes them stronger and angrier!

In Nea Philadelphia (Athens) a demonstration took place in the afternoon. Slogans were written on the walls and banks' windows and some surveillance cameras were destroyed. The demonstration was followed by two riot squads. When it reached the local police station, two more riot squads appeared. The protesters threw paint, rocks and oranges to the cops. The cops threw teargas and moved closer to the protesters. When the demonstration ended, the riot cops came even closer and some protesters made a picket line facing the cops to protect the rest of the protesters. The residents and passersby started too calling the cops to go away. When they did, some protesters left and some stayed for an assembly to decide further actions.

In Serres an huge banner was unfolded at night on the city's acropolis on which was written: “Don't let them humiliate you, resist. Free all the arrestees now”

Two videos from the city of Larisa were published yesterday, showing "infuriated citizens" (that is parastate right-wing thugs and cops in plain clothes) looking for protesters with sticks in their hands. Among them was the mayor of Larissa and you can hear him calling the “citizens” to “take justice into their own hands”!

Now if I was to make a comment about those thugs around the mayor... like if they only started to walk straight that day, I would be out of order would I ? Complete neanderthals

**love the photo snadge, I have been feeling like that at times as well

Dimitri any details about the occupation at the Law uni, this morning on the news they referred to it as occupied (flash radio) is everything fine with it?

The last 2 entries from the ASOEE's blog- until we meet again

Wednesday 24 December 2008

ABOUT THE DEMO TODAY 24/12 - NEXT MEETING 27/12

After locking the gate of ASOEE (economics uni of Athens) at 3.30 pm, inside where we lived so much, created, organized and conspired for 18 days, the comrades at the site we headed for the demo that was called for solidarity to all the detained and arrested during the uprising at Monastiraki for 4.00 pm by the occupied GSEE (trade union federation) last Sunday.

At the demo more than 1000 people took part and we passed along the whole of Ermou str (major shopping str in the centre of Athens) on xmas eve, disrupting the shopping. Apart of the many usual slogans, the atmosphere often vibrated with " you let the forests burn just for fun and now you're guarding the ... (an adjective for the mayor who's put 24-hour watch around the xmas tree in Syndagma square)... xmas tree.
*Photos from the demo http://athens.indymedia.org/front.php3?lang=el&article_id=955388

The cops were absolutely disorganized and in no way they had any control of the situation. It was the choice of the demonstrators alone not to have any attacks today. At Syndagma square the demonstrators after having some fun with the riot squads guarding the square and the tree we then turned down to Mitropoleos str and returned back to Monastiraki. On the way back, at every alley, there was police presence. The clowns had removed license plates, turned off the lights, closen the doors and taken away the police patrol....

... Next meeting on Saturday 27/12, 4.00 pm at the Polytechnic for the open assembly concerning the solidarity for all the detained of the uprising.
