Are you looking forward to the World Cup?

Of course I am. Cannot fucking wait. It's the best football.

4 games a day. 4!

Absolutely love it.
bollocks is it the best football. the best football's in the league, where people practice together all the time, not in internationals where people spend just a few weeks working together

Yup looking foward to it. You get far more different styles of play than you do in the CL precisely because X it's not just European teams playing European teams. Some of the big stars struggle in lesser national teams, you find some new players and there's always one team you develop a soft spot for. Despite the big teams there is always some upsets . Over here Portugal Spain will be a big night , I'm helping my local bar put a TV outside , connect my amplifier and sound bar . There will be grilled chouriso , snails, bifanas and lashings of Sagres.

On Friday night I'm going to the gym then, in the shopping centre, there's a giant screen for the Spain Portugal match.

For me it's gym, bar for pizza and beer, while watching the game.

Hell yes, I'm excited.

WC before last I was in Praça de Liberdade in Porto for the England Portugal game. The atmosphere was fantastic. The local homeless who find you a parking place knew me. That night they were hugging me and telling me I didn't need to pay them. I've never known anything like it.

Chouriço assado? I loved that.

As folk on urban are getting on a bit these days, might be worth getting your ticker checked out before watching too many matches..

:(

Hard to get excited about this one - seems weird for anything like this to be held in Russia at the moment, and where I am most of the games are going to be on early in the morning anyway.

I live near Little Portugal so might get more into it if Portugal starts doing well...

Living in London (ie not in England since Brexit) and having become a Father I have completely lost interest in the England football team.

A bit underwhelmed at the moment. It doesn't help that the opening game is Russia/ Saudi Arabia. First game should have involved Germany. Germany/Mexico would have been a great opening game.

Yeah, that IS weird. Defending champs should start, really. But then the defending champions don't qualify by right and there'll be 48 teams soon so nothing is sacred

It's the best football cos it gives me stuff like Russia vs Saudi Arabia. I can watch it without panicking every time the other team touch the ball and its like I dunno MMA or something. Not that I watch MMA.

The PL (and all other major European leagues) are systematically rigged to the gills. Watching Man Utd and City fans arguing about who's spent the least obscene amount of money isn't my idea of fun. Give me Mexico vs Japan or Nigeria against Portugal. Let's see these players I've never heard of.

The best football isn't always the prettiest or the most skilful. Scott Parker doing three sliding tackles in about ten seconds and a 22 stone Dean Ashton scoring with an overhead kick at Mark Noble's testimonial and then going off injured straight after. Probably my favourite two moments of the last ten years.

FIFA are terrible, Russia are terrible but fuck it. Cannot wait for it to start.

The fact that it’s in Russia has taken most of the shine off for me and I’m hoping that the whole event will somehow be a massive failure and embarrassment to Vlad and his mates but that’s unlikely.

As far as England are concerned I hope they do well and I’ll watch the matches over the top of my laptop, maybe even get a bit excited if we progress, but I’m not expecting much.

I’ll probably also watch to support Anyone But Russia. Ireland and Ivory Coast aren’t in it so, meh, basically.

I've actually surprised myself in how much I'm looking forward to this. A week ago I didn't really care but its been slowly building all week and I've woken up pretty excited (fnar fnar).

If nothing else its a brief distraction from the seemingly endless drudgery of life. Hopefully for a few weeks I won't be so bored I resort to reading the Dulwich Hamlet threads.

Don't watch it.

What's the first game you reckon is unmissable?
There are scant few 'classic' matches in the group stages. Spain vs Portugal tomorrow is one, and if things go as expected, England vs Belgium will meet in their last group game to decide top spot.

Other than that...

There will almost certainly (hopefully!) be other good matches, but they're not easily predictable for a relatively casual fan like me.
