Are You "Anyone But England"?

Yet Joyce was using it liberally
Ya wanna know what else Joyce was "using liberally"?

There's this thing called a Discussion Thread, right - you may have heard of these. They're online ''places'' where people who don't live close together and perhaps don't know each other in meat-space (aka Real Life) can exchange news, views, blues, social cues, preferences in shoes etc.

Anyway, I read a message from some poster who said he was English but wanted England to lose the World Cup. Ths intrigued me so i asked him why he felt that way?

He seemed to misunderstand the notion of a Discussion Thread, and told me it was none of my business.

I asked him why the fuck he was even involved in the discussion then?

He kind of just sneered and picked his nose, and continued to misunderstand what a Discussion Thread on the internets is really for. He seemed to think it was more for impressing strangers than for exchanging news and views etc.

I'm still waiting for him to answer fwiw, but not eagerly.

Sorry, I may have jumped the gun but my predictive text is going a bit crazy and may be reaching ahead a little too far.
/ˈlɒl/ Wow...cool story bro, but as usual fairly wide of the mark. Your predictive text appears to be a bit /ʃɪt/ tbh.

So...Mr /ˈməʊʤəʊˈpɛski/ you claim to be interested in a "discussion" eh? Really? Your opening condescending leading question followed by a deliberate misrepresentation of my position appears to suggest otherwise. Perhaps you were more interested in impressing your mates.

Indeed I was born in England, and yes I do mostly "support" whoever England happen to be playing. ...and so what?

The OP question is "are you anyone but England", and I've answered it. The mere existence of ABE's appears to /ˈtrɪgə/ quite a few of those loyal to the queen, who appear to be more prone to attacking rather than conversing whenever they encounter this apparent heresy.

If you were genuinely interested in having a discussion rather than having a dig and taking cheap shots, then perhaps you need to go back to the drawing board and try a different approach. I'm not obliged to justify my position or give an explanation especially to rude and mischievous people like yourself.

I will most definitely be rooting for Slaven Bilic's lot tonight however I am not optimistic and expect to see plenty of gloating from the u75 Lunders. Should Croatia pull it off then I shall quietly enjoy the result and look forward to the final.

Go Goran...
World Cup 2018: England underestimate Croatia - Goran Ivanisevic
...hopefully he will be the last one standing in the pub.

The worse that can happen is that England beat both Croatia and France and I'm prepared to accept that fate, it'll probably be a bit like all that London 2012 nonsense, and I managed to survive that, so I think I'll be ok. ;)

So you're not in fact ABE, you just like to pose as ABE

This just isn’t true.

Come on England!

There is a notable 'anyone but England' attitude amongst the UK middle class and 'anti-fascist' left, as if the vast majority of decent England supporters can be blamed for the crimes of British Imperialism or for a minority chair throwing, ambulance trashing, morons. If we extend the stupid logic of blaming the majority of English football supporters for the transgressions of their ruling elite or for the anti-social actions of any other minority, then all decent Columbian fans would likewise be seen as complicit in the country's drugs cartels and death squads and all decent Croatians for their country's blood splattered fascist history.

In reality we have, in the current England set up, the most multiracial, likeable, intelligent and down to earth team for decades and this is a good representation of the wider English working class.

Here's a good piece from former Everton and Wales goalkeeper Neville Southall covering similar points:

Jordan Pickford has one question to ask himself – how good does he want to be? | Neville Southall

from SOuthall's article

"England’s football team have a winner in charge. Southgate’s got a great young goalkeeper, a fine goalscorer and a very happy team who want to play for him. Southgate has put his faith in Pickford who has seen a lot of non-league and lower division football. It’s good experience. The lower down you start, the more you realise what it means at the grassroots. You also see how hard you have to work to get to the top. It instils a good work ethic from the bottom up. If you start from the top you don’t always realise how hard it is be successful. Pickford and Southgate’s England understand.

More than any other team in recent times they’ve gone back to working-class values. They’re working hard as a team, running for each other, not caring about their own careers but putting the team first. Yes, they’ve won a few games but their values are more important. You give everything for your team. There’s nothing about the individual star.

These are old-fashioned values that people don’t see in football anymore. They’re prepared to get hurt. They’re prepared to block tackles. They’re prepared to put their head in and their foot in. They don’t moan at each other. They get up and get on with it. They show passion. They show commitment. More than anything they show honesty. Once you’ve got all that you have every chance of achieving.
The contrast with politics is obvious. If you look at politicians they don’t have any of these values. England and Pickford, under Southgate, have this humility, honesty, dedication and a straight work ethic. That’s why people take to them.

Southgate has even got it right with the waistcoat. You always need a pocket to keep your medal. Gareth’s waistcoat could soon be carrying a World Cup medal – and Pickford can play a huge role in making that happen.

You left out the best Big Nev quote!

"Southgate would do a far better job of handling Brexit than Mrs May because he would create the right environment. He would create winners. She’s gathered a bunch of losers around her. She has our future in our hands and she’s ruining it. Do you think Alex Ferguson would let these losers around her do what they’re doing? They’d be out quicker than they could say Hard Brexit. But he’s a winner. Unfortunately, she’s a loser."

Have to say, I keep tabs on a large swathe of the UK middle class & "antifascist" left across various forms of social media, and have seen almost no ABE stuff, except among the Welsh, Irish or Scottish contingents. The vast majority of the UK middle class left are either enthusiastically supporting the English football team, or are saying nothing at all about it at all. The IWCA is doing exactly what it then goes on to moan about in the very next sentence.

...you forgot to mention the French and Belgians for their wonderful colonial African exploits...and Haiti ;)

There appears to be a number of conspiracy theories emerging as to the origins of ABE's. Apparently they appear to be anything from racist Alt-Rights Trumpists to Antifa...that's quite some range. I have no affiliations with any of that lot. On the political spectrum (as if that is of relevance anyway) I guess I would be considered to be left-centrist. I voted Corbyn at the last election and prior to that hadn't voted since I helped that cunt Blair into power (what a mistake that was). So I have no idea about wtf the IWCA is and don't care tbh. I have my own personal reasons for being unapologetically ABE and afaic I don't need to justify my position and don't see why it should bother anyone else.

Yes as you said, the England team are more culturally diverse and there appears to be some decent gentlemen in the team, and things have certainly improved since the days when the likes of Clyde Best, Viv Anderson, the "Three Degrees" and John Barnes were regularly having bananas chucked at them by the aforementioned boneheaded knuckle dragging fans. We have made progress and while all of that is laudable it doesn't really influence my personal reason for being ABE, and I don't see why anyone should be bullied into compliance for the audacity of having a personal preference. Aren't the English supposed to be a tolerant lot? Whatever happened to "live and let live"? It's almost feels like how gay folk had to keep there sexual preferences quiet for fear of ridicule and persecution.

Perhaps I should team up with the WCW's during these testing times...

You've declared you're not ABE so stop farting on so

I think they've realised they're on a hiding to nothing, and are trying to sneak away without anyone noticing.
I wonder if a mod will be along shortly to close the thread down, because an unnamed person (who may or may not be vegan) complained of bullying.
I was out and off the internet all day so not reading this shit, any chance you could cut it out?
e2a I've not tried to have any threads closed down

Errrr... no!
You invited yourself onto the thread and started spouting shite. I feel it only fair that you're treated with fitting respect.

tbh, I'm not active on social media and I haven't looked at the world cup threads in here so I don't know what other ABE folk have been doing or saying (or if they even exist).

Out in the real world the only other person I can remember admitting that he was ABE was my Scottish boss during the Euro 96 campaign after I wore a Scotland top (that my mum bought me from Freemans) to the office prior to the England vs Scotland match. That didn't work cos England beat Scotland 2-0. (Gascoigne and the dentists chair).

Two matches later I wore a Barcelona baseball cap to work (the cheapest Spanish wearable I could find in SoccerScene Carnaby St) prior to the England vs Spain quarter final. That didn't work either. Spain had 2 perfectly good goals disallowed and a clear penalty not given and England won on penalties. (Stuart Pearce's penalty redemption).

Before the semi-final I took the only visibly German thing I owned, a giant Frankfurt mug. That finally worked. Germany winning on penalties (again), although I did feel a bit sorry for Southgate missing that penalty.

Should England win the world cup in Russia, Southgate can certainly bury the demons from Euro 96 and that would make a good story, however for now I'm backing Croatia.
